✨✧ Banda Black RioO Som Das Americas ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Contemporary work from Banda Black Rio – the legendary Brazilian funk band who gave us some really great records in the 70s! Turns out, the group still sounds great after all the passage of years – more in a modern soul mode overall, with a few more sophisticated twists and turns alongside the grooves – and a wider style overall, to make room for guests who include Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and others! Think of the music as a progression from earlier Brazilian soul modes – a bit in the way that early Ed Motta work was a step forward from the generation of Tim Maia – and amidst the great guest vocal work, there's also plenty of sharp instrumentation. Titles include "Arthur E O Gigante", "America Do Sul", "Labirintos", "Rir E Chorar", "Isabela", "Aos Pes Do Redentor", "Vento Leva", "Aguas Sabias", "Bossa Da Praia", and "Nove No Samba". CD

Jorge BenBen E Samba Bom ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1964. Used ... $14.99
Amazing stuff! Jorge Ben never made a bad record in the 60s – and this is one of his best! The album's filled with tight jaunty numbers that mix big band samba arrangements with quickly strummed guitar, and Jorge's wonderfully raw vocals – all classic stuff for Jorge, but a style that we never tire of! Every track's a winner, and the album glides effortlessly from number to number, grooving along with a stunning mix of instruments, vocals, and this incredible echoey production. Titles include "Vou De Samba Com Voce", "Guerreiro Do Rei", "Descalco No Parque", "Gabriela", "Saida Do Porto", "Bicho Do Mato", and "Zope Zope". CD

Jorge BenTabua De Esmeralda ... CD
Philips/Universal (Brazil), 1974. Used ... $18.99
Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Chico Buarque/Nara Leao/Maria BethaniaQuando O Carnaval Chegar ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $13.99
A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together! Joao GilbertoJoao Gilberto In Tokyo ... LP
Universal (Japan), 2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $69.99
A beautiful recent live recording from bossa legend Joao Gilberto – the kind that shows that he's still very much in fine fine form! The set was recorded in Tokyo, and features Joao on voice and guitar – with no other instrumentation at all – replicating the feel of some of his sparest classic work, with a style and approach that seems even better with age. There's a waning sadness to the whole set that's really compelling – the weight of years that somehow makes classic tunes sound even more meaningful than before! 15 tracks in all – with titles that include "Aos Pes Da Cruz", "Bolinha De Papel", "Louco", "Pra Que Discutir Com Madame", "Doralice", "Este Seu Olhar", and "Preconceito". ✨✧ Antonio Carlos Jobim & Luiz BonfaOrfeu Negro (aka Black Orpheus) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Universal (France), 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks ever – a record that set a whole new standard for audio representation of a film! The mad music for the set was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vincius De Moraes – and performed by Luiz Bonfa on guitar – but despite such prime bossa pedigree, the whole thing's got a sound that goes way beyond the familiar – a crazy mix of batucada percussion, samba rhythms, bossa guitar, and loads of sound effects from the film – so much so that the first half of the record is almost a sound-for-sound replication of the first 20 minutes of the movie! The sound collage is amazing – an extremely unique approach to soundtrack representation, and one that's never been done so beautifully since. A truly breathtaking record, filled with mindblowing sounds – and an early example of the genius that would explode in 60s music in Brazil. Some key bossa classics are represented here in early versions – including "Felicidade", "O Nosso Amor", and "Manha De Carnaval" – but they're wrapped up in odd sounds and rhythms that really make them sound different! Expanded edition features 7 bonus tracks – 3 on CD for the first time ever – plus notes on the music, and a longer set of notes in French. (Soundtracks, Brazil) CD

✨✧ Os MutantesMutantes (1969) (Brazilian pressing) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Brazil), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second set of madness from the legendary Os Mutantes – and like the first, an album done in close collaboration with arranger/producer Rogerio Duprat, whose talents add a new level of genius to the record! The album's got a compelling mix of styles that strikes out on the very first tune – a playful pastiche that's partly postmodern, partly psychedelic, and still tremendously powerful decades later – even if you can't understand most of the lyrics! Styles are just about impossible to pin down, but that's what makes the record so unique and essential – and if you ever needed one album to convince you of the mindblowing energy taking place during the Tropicalia years, this one may well be it! A few tracks are written by Tom Ze, and titles include "Dom Quixote", "Dia 36", "Magica", "Rita Lee", "Algo Mais", "Qualquer Bobagem", and "Fuga No II". CD

PapeteBerimbau E Percussao – Music & Rhythms Of Brasil ... CD
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s-Early 80s. Used ... $24.99
Great stuff! This is Soul Jazz's compilation of the beautiful music of the Brazilian percussionist Papete. The work here spans a wide range of styles, but like all the Soul Jazz comps, it's put together in a fantastic way that spins and swirls through an amazing mix of music. Some cuts have a strident jazzy feel to them, like the album's great cover of "Ponteio", while others are much more stripped down and folkloric sounding. Never a dull moment, and Papete plays a range of instruments – from drums, to cuica, to tamborim, to marimbas – and a whole lot more! If you like some of Airto's stuff, or if you were one of the many who've bought the Quarteto Novo LP from us – you'll love this one! CD

An excellent compilation of work by this heavenly Brazilian vocal group! The Quarteto Em Cy were one of the loveliest combos of the bossa years, and they continued to make great work into the 70s and 80s – as you'll hear on this "best of" set that spans the group's 30 years in the music business. Titles include "A Banda", "Intuil Paisagem", "O Circo", "Idolatrada", "Sim Ou Nao", "Salve O Verde", "Samba Do Crioulo Doido", and a few "pout pourri" tracks that feature work by Jobim, Ary Barroso, and Antonio Maria. Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo (Brazilian version) ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". Banda Black RioMaria Fumaca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Funky samba soul from the Brazilian scene of the early 80s – a record that's drunk deep on all the best elements of Jorge Ben and his generation, then comes up with a groove that's even more soulful and groovy! The instrumentation has some occasional jazzy touches – the sorts of flourishes we love in Banda Black Rio – but the vocals are much more in the lead, and are served up by the completely charming Serginho Meriti – one of those Brazilian singers who grabs you right away, even if you can't understand his language – as there's a universal sense of soul that really makes the whole thing very appealing! The set's relatively short, but packed with great cuts – and titles include "Bons Momentos", "Malandro Velho", "Serjane", "Tipo Help", "Mona Lisa", "Batalha Maravilhosa", and "Madureira E Dai". A soaring blend of Brazilian modes – served up here by Ricardo Richaid, who's almost a one-man army himself, given the amount of instruments he plays on the set! Yet the record is also way more than just a batch of tunes cooked up in a bedroom – as Richaid has collaborators on nearly every track – which expands his own work on piano, bass, and a variety of guitars – really helping to situation his raspy and compelling vocals amidst some jazzier touches on flute and tenor, guest vocals, percussion, and other elements along the way! The tunes are often really catchy and compelling, even if your command of Portuguese is as bad as ours – and it's clear that Ricardo really knows his way around a hook, in sort of a universal way – while still making music that's completely his own.
