VariousAndy Votel Presents Brazilika – Non Stop Subtropical Psychedelia From The Vaults Of Brazil's Som Livre & RGE ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds! The tracks here are much grittier than the work we're used to hearing from the Far Out label – as Votel's dug through the 60s and 70s vaults of RGE/Som Livre Records to come up with rare Brazilian rock, funk, and other heavy styles from back in the day! As with Votel's reissues on Finders Keepers, there's a sound here that's informed by beathead record collecting – a love of older grooves directed by current musical developments – all with a definite ear for the wilder side of the sound spectrum. Most tracks have a pretty heavy groove – and the styles run from psychedelic rock through Tropicalia-inspired tunes, to post-bossa, Bahian sounds, and more. Titles include "Funga Funga" by Trio Soneca, "Careta" by Betinho, "Modulo Lunar" by Os Brazoes, "Terra Livre" by Abilio Manoel, "Os Bichos" by Trio Soneca, "De Vera" by Novos Baianos, "Ciladas" by Pery Ribeiro, "Se Voce Pensa" by Moraes Moreira, "Flores Belas" by Tim Maia, "1974" by Gerson Conrad & Zeze Motta, "Gamboa" by Brazilian Octopus, "Deixe Entrar Um Pouco D'Agua No Quintal" by Os Mutantes, "Periscopio" by Azimuth, and "Gotham City" by Os Brazoes. ✨✧ Jorge BenAlo Alo, Como Vai? ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tighter than Jorge Ben's funky work from the early 70s – but still pretty darn great! The record's got Jorge working in a smoother vein than on his Philips sides, with the same sort of modern soul approach that Marcos Valle and other older Brazilian singers were using at the time. But since Jorge's always been a soulster from the start, the style works perfectly for his warm vocals and his keen talent for putting over a groove. Arrangements have kind of a brassy funky samba groove – and titles include "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae", "Solitario Surfista", "Olha A Pipa", "Cae Cae Caetano", "Alo Alo, Como Vai?", and "A Cegohna Me Deixou Em Mardureira". Som Livre/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
We don't know much about this guy, but this is a pretty sweet little set – a mixture of mainstream MPB and more soulful touches – all put together with some especially warm arrangements from Lincoln Olivetti! At some level, we'd almost be tempted to call this a set of Brazilian soul – especially due to the great use of keyboards, mellow grooves, and warm vocals on the record – but the overall style is a bit more mainstream, and gets slightly poppy at times too – a bit in a Free Soul sort of groove! Titles include "Num Paraiso", "Brenda", "Pensando Nela", "Renascendo Em Mim", "Saber Viver", "Nao Quero Mais", "Curtindo O Silencio", and "Menina Mulher". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Waltel BrancoAssim Na Terra Como No Ceu ... CD
Som Livre/Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the grooviest work ever cut by Brazilian trombonist Waltel Branco – a set that's very different than just about anything he ever put on record, and which is also material used in an early 70s TV series as well! The sound here is kind of a criss-cross between some of the cool Brazilian arranging styles of the time – the sorts of backings you'd hear on records by folks like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo – mixed with some of the groovier European soundtrack modes of the period – especially Italy and France, and the great way those scenes really messed with production and instrumental styles. There's more than a few funky cuts here – making the album a real treasure in Branco's catalog – and almost all tracks are instrumental – but the set does feature one vocal number, "Frustracao", sung by Arlete Salles. Other titles include "I Giorni Dell'Ira", "200 MPH", "Bandinha", "Diana", "Tema De Ricardinho", "Tema De Abertura", "Efeito", "Back Ground", and "Zorro". CD

✨✧ Rita Lee & Tutti FruttiFruto Proibido ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Forbidden Fruit from the great Rita Lee – a record that has her working with the Tutti Frutti combo, a line that's decidedly more mainstream than her more famous group, Os Mutantes – but one who also really let Rita focus on her newly-developed title for putting over a very catchy tune! The group bring more of a rock-heavy finish to the record than some of Rita's later work – and the guitars and vocals are nicely compressed down in the production – maybe a bit like some of the best Brit mainstream work of the mid 70s – an approach that works well for Lee, and maybe even makes some of the music feel as much like a commentary on mainstream rock as much as catchy tuneful work headed for the charts. Titles include "O Toque", "Ovelha Negra", "Pirataria", "Dancar Pra-nao Dancar", and "Carto Postal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Edu Lobo & Chico BuarqueO Grande Circo Mistico ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1983. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An ambitious larger production from the team of Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque – the famous stage musical O Grande Circo Mistico, based on the poem by Jorge De Lima, and featuring a range of top-shelf performers that includes Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Jane Duboc, Zizi Possi, Simone, and Tim Maia! The work has a serious style that's in keeping with some of Lobo's more contemplative work of the 70s – but also has some of the more dynamic horn arrangements that were also showing up in his work. And as you'd guess from the title, there's a bit of a "circus" feel in the air – but one that's musically playful, and never too kitschy. Titles include "Meu Namorado", "Sobre Todas As Coisas", "Na Carreira", "O Circo Mistico", "A Bela E A Fera", "A Historia De Lily Braun", and "Beatriz". LP, Vinyl record album

Som Livre/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $40.99 48.99
Certainly one of the greatest albums by this excellent (and oft-overlooked!) group from the 70s! The band of young Bahians deliver a great mix of tracks tinged with bits of rock, funky samba, and even a few psychedelic influences – with alternating male and female vocals, and some excellent songwriting that places the record right up there with some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil from the same time! We love this one to death, and find it to be one of the few records by the group that we return to again and again – a real post-Tropicalia classic that's filled with great songs. Tracks include "Preta Pretinha", "Besta E Tu", "A Menina Danca", "Swing De Campo Grande", and "Tinindo Trincando". LP, Vinyl record album

A totally great album from Novos Baianos – the earliest one we've ever seen by the group, and a session that has them sounding a fair bit like Os Mutantes! There's a wild range of influences running through the set – some psychedelic, some baroque pop, and some a bit more rootsy – as the group would explore more deeply in the mid 70s – and throughout the set there's a great sense of play in the music, the kind of tongue in cheek quality that we love in Os Mutantes, and which we never expected so strongly from these guys! Titles include "O Samba Me Traiu", "Ferro Na Boneca", "Eu De Adjetivos", "Outro Mambo Outro Mundo", "Colegio De Aplicao", "A Casca De Banana Que Eu Pisei", "Juventude Sexta E Sabado", and "De Vera". ✨✧ Elis ReginaTrem Azul ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1982. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Excellent late live work from Elis Regina – a beautiful double-length set that really gets at the depth of feeling and emotion she brought to her music! The set's one of the last ever recorded in Elis' all-too-short life – and it's got the same vibrancy and soaring sensibilities as her live Montreux performance, from the same stretch in her career. Backings are by a tight combo who bring a nice groove to some cuts, and let Elis really stretch out on others – and the rawness of the sound is a nice contrast to the polished production of some of her later studio records, too! Titles include "Trem Azul", "The Fuzz", "Lanca Perfume", "Flora", "Unencounter", and "Vento De Maio". LP, Vinyl record album

The groove has a good modern soul feel, and about 50% of the tracks are instrumental. ✨✧ Marcos ValleVontade De Rever Voce ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1981. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky soul from the great Marcos Valle – a great blend of mellow grooves and upbeat tunes recorded at the same time Valle was working in the US with Leon Ware! The style here is very similar to Ware's 2 albums for Elektra – both of which feature work from Valle, and include tunes that are also done here in Portuguese versions! Marcos makes a real departure from some of his earlier work here, and emerges as a surprisingly great soul star with plenty of talents for penning two-step tunes and keyboard-heavy tracks that glisten with a sweet California groove. A few tracks recall some of Valle's Odeon work – like the baroque instrumental "Camina Grande" – but we're most partial to the soul tracks that dominate the record, and which include "Bicho No Cio", "Pecados De Amor","Garimpando" and "A Paraiba Nao e Chicago". A killer Brazilian soundtrack! The record is a mix of funky easy tracks – in a Blue Brazil kind of mode – with other titles played by trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos that have a jazzier edge to them. The whole thing's kind of a mad mix of old and new Brazilian styles of music, touched by just a bit of 70s sleaze to give it a cool edge. Titles include "As Moca" by Osmar Milito e Trama, "Mentira" by Marcos Valle, "Amar Sofrer E Sonhar" by Nuvens, "Posso Ver O Mundo Pela Janela" by Trama, "Manha De Sol" by Piry, and "Maria", "Mulher", "Carinhoso", and "No Ranco Fundo" by Marcio Montarroyos. A rare Brazilian soundtrack on Som Livre – one that features work recorded for this story set in the 50s, which gives most of the tracks a rock n roll-ish kind of sound, a bit like the jovem guarda work coming out of Brazil in the 60s. A few titles are covers of American pop or rock tunes – and there's a few bossa ditties thrown on the end to even things out a bit. Som Livre (Brazil), 1973. Very Good+ ... $9.99 11.99
Extremely compelling work by the team of Toquinho & Vinicius! The album's a soundtrack to the Globo TV show O Bem Amado – and it's one of a number of albums that were recorded for Brazilian soap operas during the early 70s, most of which (including this one!) feature rare work that didn't appear on other LPs. The arrangements are great – handled on one track by Rogerio Duprat – and the record's got a baroque feel that reminds us of the best work on EMI/Odeon from the same time. A few tracks feature vocals by Maria Creusa, some by Toquinho, either solo or with Vinicius, and one by the Coral Som Livre. Includes the great groovy "Paiol De Polvora", plus "Meu Pai Oxala", "Cotidiano No 2", "Veja Voce", "Patota De Ipanema", and "No Colo Da Serra". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work by some of the greatest Brazilian singers and songwriters of the 70s! The material was recorded exclusively for this TV soundtrack in 1976 – and although the scope of the story stretches back to the early 20th century, the feel of most of the material is prime mid 70s MPB. Overall, this is one of the more introspective titles in this series of classic Som Livre soundtracks – as you might guess from the range of material and performers. Titles include "So Louco" by Gal Costa, "Latin Lover" by Joao Bosco, "O Casarao" by Dori Caymmi, "Coisas Da Vida" by Rita Lee, "Tangara" by Coral Som Livre, "A Dor A Mais" by Francis Hime, "Retrato" by Sueli Costa, and "Carolina" by Aquarius. Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A never-issued album by the great Hermeto Pascoal – recorded in the space between his 70s classics Slaves Mass and A Musica Livre – and every bit as amazing as those classics! The music here is fluid, open, and a fantastic mix of jazz and all of Hermeto's new ideas about musical structure – performed at a level that's highly organic, and with that completely individual vision that Pasocal brought to his sound from the start! This isn't typical Brazilian fusion of the time, but nor is it anything like the tighter sounds that Airto and Flora Purim were recording up in the US – instead, a musical mode that's completely in its own space, and which needs only one listen to convince you of the master's genius. The group here is overflowing with young talent – Lelo Nazario on keyboards, Nivaldo Ornelas and Mauro Senise on saxes and flute, Toninho Horta on guitar, Zeca Assumpcao on bass, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums – all important musical visionaries on their own, working together here to hit an even new level of creativity. Aleuda Chaves sings wordlessly on a bit of the record – and the whole thing has that blend of soaring sound and lyricism that marks Pascoal at his best. Pretty groovy recent live album, recorded with the participation of Chico Buraque and Boca Livre. Joyce runs through a nice mix of breezy bossa titles and some of her better and lesser-known tracks – and the overall sound is better than most of the recent Joyce albums on major labels, as it leaves off the schmaltzy studio work for some great straight-ahead live playing that reminds us more of her classic stuff. Philips (Uruguay), 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful early gem from Nara Leao! This one has a similar feel to her classic O Canto Livre album – in that it's got a deeper approach than some of her bossa work, with a mix of some of the more complicated, slightly folksy styles used by singers like Geraldo Vandre or Chico Buarque De Hollanda. The sound is wonderfully dark – a moodier approach to the music than used by some of Nara's contemporaries – without any of the sweeter styles you'd get from other Brazilian female singers of the 60s. Titles include Nara's great single "A Banda", plus "Favela", "Funeral De Lavrador", "Cancao Do Bicho", "Faz Escuro Mas Eu Canto", "Ladainha", and "Ana Vai Ambora". Arrangements by Geni Marcondes – and a great cover! LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible early work by Nara Leao – some of the most groundbreaking vocals of the bossa era! The arrangements are by Luiz Eca, pianist of the Tamba Trio – and backing is by a small group that includes Eca, Dori Caymmi, and other jazz-tinged players. The overall quality of the backings sounds a lot more like an album recorded five years after the mid 60s – and Nara's mix of bohemian hip and honest bossa sincerity really makes the tracks sparkle wonderfully. ✨✧ Hermeto PascoalMusica Livre De Hermeto Pascoal ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the clearest moment of genius ever from the legendary Hermeto Pascoal – a tremendous album that helped reshape instrumental Brazilian music for many years to come! At one level, the record shares a sound with some of the fuller, richer orchestrations going on in the post-bossa years – especially the work of Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle – but at another, it's filled with the kind of inventive instrumental interplay that's always made Hermeto so great, but which has never come off so perfectly as it does here! As you might expect from Pascoal, there's some especially great reed passages – crafted in a flurry of colors and tones – but there's also a warmer, more flowing quality to the whole album – less of the dark notes and pointy edges that show up often in Hermeto's work from later years. Bits of strings help the whole thing glide tremendously – and the record's a genre-busting blend of jazz, Brazilian roots, and complicated arrangements – unlike anything else we've ever heard, and still one of our favorite albums of all time! Titles include "Bebe", "Asa Branca", "Carinhoso", "Plin", "Gaio Da Roseira", and "Sereiarei". CD

Chaos/Polysom (Brazil), 1996. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Believe it or not, the title's a pretty good way to describe this modern Brazilian rock release – as the music's a mish mash of newer beats and grooves, grounded in a hip hop/dance tradition, mixed with samples of older Brazilian rock influences – including stuff by Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso. We like this one a lot better than we expected, and we hardly mind the modern elements, when we can get an occasional treat like a sample of "Bat Macumba", or a remake of "Maracatu Atomico". The latter track is included here in 4 different mixes, and other tracks include "Sangue De Bairro", "Mateus Enter", "O Cidado Do Mundo", "Maco", "Um Passeio No Mundo Livre", and "Baiao Ambiental". A wicked collaboration between Marcos Valle and Celso Fonseca – a set that's different than other recent work from both artists, and pretty darn great overall! The style's a bit fuller and more soulful than some other recent Valle albums – and Fonseca's got more force too – not nearly as gentle as on some of his own albums, and working with Marcos in a mode that recalls some of the best soul-based sound of Valle's records from years back! Both Marcos and Celso sing on the set – and Valle plays lots of Fender Rhodes, in ways that remind us that he was one of our favorite musicians to handle the keyboard back in the 70s – and most cuts on the record are co-composed by Valle and Fonseca. Titles include "Quase Perto", "Tres Da Tarde", "Pagina Central", "Pra Tocar Assim", "Faz De Conta", "Azul Cristal", "Voo Livre", and "Curvas Do Tempo". CD
