✨✧ AzymuthCascades/Rapid Transit ... CD
Milestone, 1982/1983. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Sublimely soulful work from Azymuth – 2 albums back to back on a single CD! Cascades is fantastic fusion from a group who just couldn't miss during these early 80s California years! The sound here is smooth, but never slick – always a little offbeat, and quite different from more mainstream US fusion of the time – thanks to the genius of Jose Roberto Bertrami's keyboards, which glide one moment, dip the next, and often have these slight changes in speed that are totally great. Other members of the core trio include Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar and Ivan Conti on drums and percussion – and the set also features guest work by Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, Jose Carlos on flute, and Sidney Moreira on percussion. Titles include "Remembering Milton", "Club Morocco", "Through The Window", "Festa Nativa", "Cascade Of The Seven Waterfalls", and "Indian Pepper". Rapid Transit is a set with a really warm groove overall – hardly the too-fast, or too-urban record you might expect from the title! Instead, there's a nicely organic sensibility going on here – a sound that feels fresh and spontaneous, even when it's in the highly electric territory of Jose Roberto Bertami's keyboards. There's a slight bit of added flute and percussion on the set, but most of the sounds here are from the core Azymuth trio – who even vocalize wordlessly on one of the album's best tracks. Titles include "Missing Doto", "Make Mine Guarana", "Gate Of Time", "I'm Just Looking Around", "Somewhere In Brazil", and "Afternoon". CD

✨✧ AzymuthLight As A Feather (with bonus track) ... CD
Victor (Japan), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! There's a simple, elegant feel to these tunes that takes off nicely from the group's previous album for Atlantic in Brazil – a pushing forward of the soulful sides of their style, but with just the right blend of quirkier elements as well – one that still keeps the edge of the early years, yet helps the group reach out with a wonderfully warm sound! Most tracks are quite spare, and without any too-smooth polishing in production – and titles include the classic "Jazz Carnival", a funky fusion classic if there ever was one – plus "Light As A Feather", "Avenida Das Manguerias", "This Exists", "Partido Alto", "Dona Olimpia", "Amazonia", and "Young Embrace". CD also features the bonus track "Montreux"! CD
(Out of print sealed 2008 Japanese pressing, includes obi.)

✨✧ Banda Black RioGafieira Universal ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Seminal funk by one of Brazil's greatest groups! Earth Wind & Fire had nothing on Banda Black Rio – as the Brazilian combo mixed together smooth jazz funk, soulful vocals, and great production, into a sound that rivaled any of America's best mainstream funk acts of the 70s! This album's easily their best – and is filled with tight jazzy groovers that we come back to again and again over the years, digging them for their great rhythms and tight instrumentation, never noticing the fact that the lyrics aren't in English! Includes the cuts "Chega Mais", "Tico Tico No Fuba", "Danca Do Dia", "Vidigal", "Gafiera Universal", and the totally great "Cravo e Canela", one of the sneakiest guitar groovers you'll ever hear! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jose Roberto Bertrami & His Modern SoundAventura ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A different groove than usual for Jose Roberto Bertrami – and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! Bertrami's really broken free from the regular Azymuth groove on this set – much more so than on some of his recent solo albums – playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes – mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! Jose Roberto handles his familiar Fender Rhodes on most tracks – but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well – and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. A few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from Bertrami – scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way – and production on the set is great, thanks to the Far Out touch – never too smooth, and quite different from any of Bertrami's albums recorded in the US. Titles include "Laranjeiras", "Choro", "No Tempo Da Bossa", "O Pescador", "Ecstatic 70", "Brilliante", "Eighties Times", "Aventura", and "Maixa". CD

Waltel BrancoMeu Balanco (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 32.98
A crowning classic from maestro Waltel Branco – a Brazilian talent who could be smooth and sophisticated, but also pretty darn funky too – especially on this famous album from this 70s! The set takes off in a large ensemble vein of Brazilian grooves from a few years before – kind of more of a kick to the Blue Brazil/Odeon generation, as Branco works with a large string and horn section, but also ensures lots of tightness in the rhythms, and sweet electric touches on keyboards. There's a bit of Brazilian percussion at times – which let you know you're not in familiar CTI territory – and as with so many other great Brazilian albums of the time, the production is superb – really different than on American records of this nature. Titles include "Lady Samba", "Jael", "Satiricon", "Walking", "Luar Do SErgao", "Petit Fils", and "Zoraia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Uri CaineRio ... CD
Winter & Winter (Germany), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Uri Caine in a set of Brazilian jazz tunes – playing acoustic piano and Teclado Fender Rhodes – recorded in Brazil, with backing on guitar, bass, and lots of percussion. A number of the tracks have vocals in Portuguese – and the style of the music mixes the smoother sound you'd expect from Brazilian jazz, with some of the more off-beat touches you'll find in Caine's other work. Titles include "Teu Chamego", "Assalto Cultural", "Na Lapa", "Um Minuto So", "Adeus", "Samba Da Rua", "Choro Maluco", and "Revulucionario". (Jazz, Brazil) CD

CassianoCuban Soul – 18 Kilates (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Polysom (Brazil), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
Classic work from one of Brazil's greatest soul singers of the 70s – an album of rich feeling that's a wonderful bridge between American soul music and some of the sophisticated song stylings of the MPB generation! Cassiano's somewhere in the territory of contemporary Tim Maia – but is a bit smoother and more sophisticated – more of a mature soul mode next to Maia's rougher funk – served up here with impeccable arrangements that really draw from all the best changes in Brazilian music during the early 70s. The album includes the funky "Central Do Brasil", the extended midtempo groover "Onda", the semi-hit "Hoje E Natal", and the cuts "De Bar Em Bar", "Ana", "A Lua E Eu", and "Salve Essa Flor". Pamela DriggsItacuruca ... CD
441, 2002. Used ... $2.99
A really wonderful set of Brazilian vocal tunes – sung by Pamela Driggs in a warm and jazzy mode that recalls some of the greats of the 70s! Production is spare and smooth, but never too smooth – and Pamela sings in a mix of English and Portuguese, scatting and tripping easily between the grooves. Titles include "Agua De Beber", "Take Five", "Batucada Surgiu", "Noites No Rio", "Leiloca", "Nature's Beauty", "Vivo Sonhando", and "Itacuruca". CD

✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimTide ... LP
A&M, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record – from the first off-key note to the last! The album's filled with some wonderfully moody LA studio sounds, arranged by Deodato, and a has a great swirling mix of sound that weaves around Jobim's lofty guitar and piano beautifully – complex, but still with the airy sense of space that Antonio Carlos first brought to his music in the 60s. From the very first note, you can feel the strange magic of Jobim and Deodato at work – as the album appears to be smooth and mellow, yet has a strangely unsettling undertone that keeps us coming back after all these years! Tracks include "Tema Jazz", "Carinhoso", "Rockanalia", and a nice remake of "Girl From Ipanema". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label stereo promo. Cover has a small cutout hole, some ringwear, edge wear, some fraying at the bottom seam, and minor flaking at the bottom right.)

✨✧ JoyceRevendo Amigos ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Joyce – an album that features a fair bit of help from famous friends! The set was recorded at a time when her star had faded a bit on the Brazilian market, but before she was yet to be rediscovered and re-recorded by labels in England and Japan – and despite the presence of some celebrity guest stars, the approach is often a bit mellow, in a way that makes for a very personal sort of sound. Roberto Menescal co-produced the set, and he brings a warm, acoustic feel to most numbers – kind of a gentle setting that lets Joyce relax into duets with artists who include Gal Costa, Emilio Santiago, Sandra Sa, Fatima Guedes, Ney Matogrosso, Clara Moreno, and Gilberto Gil. The sound is never too smooth or commercial – as in some other Joyce sets from the period – and titles include "Outras Mulheres", "Aleida De Ogum", "Misterios", "Da Cor Brasileira", "Stone Washed", "Essa Mulher", and "Minha Gata Rita Lee". Tim MaiaTim Maia (1977) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tania MariaPiquant ... LP
Picante/Concord, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff! Tania Maria's first few years recording in the US were some of her best – and this excellent groover on Picante features some very tight Brazilian jazz tracks, cut with a small combo of west coasters, and produced by Cal Tjader with a smooth jazzy vibe. The overall sound is nicely stripped-down, and the main focus is on Tania's soulful voice and piano. Titles include "Lemon Cuica", "Chiclete Com Banana", "Yatra Ta", "Comecar De Novo", and "Super Happy". LP, Vinyl record album

Paulinho NogueiraAgua Branca ... LP
Eldorado (Brazil), 1983. Near Mint- ... $7.99
An intimate set, and one with a touch of jazz too – thanks to arranger Nelson Ayres, who also plays piano and keyboards on the record! Paulinho Nogueira's vocals are sweetly nestled into some warm-tinged backings – in a way that's not too smooth, but which has a similar feel to some of late 70s MPB from bigger-name artists. Titles include "Vida E Mar", "Danca Das Abelhas", "Caminhantes", "Boneca", "Uma Nova Vida", and "Modinha". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, Early 70s. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very groovy record that has Bola Sete's Brazilian guitar playing set amidst some smooth arrangements recorded in the Fantasy Studios of the early 70s. Bola plays acoustic and electric, and the group backing him includes Dwight Dickerson on keyboards, Hadley Caliman on tenor, and Luis Gasca on trumpet. Very nice stuff, and a record that doesn't show up much! Titles include "Shebaba", "It's Gonna Change", "Roda", "Street Market", and "Bola Beat". LP, Vinyl record album

Tom ZeCorreio Da Estaco Do Bras (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Continental/Polysom (Brazil), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
One of the key records that helped cement the Tom Ze legacy back in the day – a set that's unlike any other work of the period from other Brazilian artists – including some of Ze's earlier contemporaries in the Tropicalia scene! There's a great mix of styles going on ranging from some spare percussive tracks, to others that have a smoother production style – and throughout it all, Ze's got that crazy approach to lyricism that marks his vocally striking work from this time. Arrangements are directed by Otavio Basso, with lots of work on both acoustic and electric instruments – keyboards mixed with cavaquinho, guitar mixed with percussion and cuica – on titles that include "Amor De Estrada", "Carta", "Morena", "Menina Jesus", "Na Parada De Sucesso", and "Pecado Rifa E Revista". LP, Vinyl record album
