Baden PowellSarava/Canto De Ossanha ... 7-inch
Saba/Wallen Bink (Germany), 1966. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99 24.99
Killer 60s work from the great Baden Powell – two tunes done for the Saba/MPS label, both with a very jazzy vibe! "Sarava" moves fast and fierce – lots of percussion driving the tune at the bottom, including work from the great Milton Banana on drums – while Baden delivers this crisp guitar solo over the top! "Canto De Ossanha" is one of our all-time favorite tunes – originally done by Powell with Vinicius De Moraes, but even better here in a fast-driving small combo mode! (Funky 45's, Brazil) 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Really wonderful pressing – done from the original master tapes! Limited edition too.)

✨✧ Caixa CuboAgora ... CD
Jazz & Milk (Germany), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Caixa Cubo are a Brazilian trio with a very keyboard-heavy sound – a mode that's rooted in cosmic energy of 70s greats like Herbie Hancock or Lonnie Liston Smith, yet which is also taken into strong vocal territory here – thanks to the appearance of a great range of different singers! Many tunes have a soulful flow that's great, and the use of keyboards and Brazilian-influenced rhythms is like an updated take on the music of Azymuth – but again with a nicely different vibe that comes from the work of vocalists who include Xenia Franca, Ze Leonidas, Matthias Schriefl, and Eric Owusu. Titles include "Agora", "Caio & Eric", "Carrossel", "Sabado", "Dreams", "Kismeti", and "Asase". CD

✨✧ Erlon ChavesSabadabada ... LP
Continental (Brazil), 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An excellent lost batch of pop arrangements from 60s Brazil! Erlon Chavez was one of the country's more unusual musical talents – and although he did straighter work for big singers like Elis Regina, his own albums are filled with nicely off-kilter jazz and bossa tunes, and plenty of nice grooves that make his rare vinyl worth digging for! This gem from the mid 60s features Chavez leading a crack group of Brazilian jazz players – including trombonist Raulzinho and alto player Hector Costita – through a groovy set of tunes that includes "Balanca Zona Sul", "Batucada", "Sabadabada", "Bafafa", "Primavera", and "Opiniao". Very nice, and with a cool cover! LP, Vinyl record album

Novos BaianosE Ferro Na Boneca (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Som Livre/Polysom (Brazil), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $40.99 42.99
A totally great album from Novos Baianos – the earliest one we've ever seen by the group, and a session that has them sounding a fair bit like Os Mutantes! There's a wild range of influences running through the set – some psychedelic, some baroque pop, and some a bit more rootsy – as the group would explore more deeply in the mid 70s – and throughout the set there's a great sense of play in the music, the kind of tongue in cheek quality that we love in Os Mutantes, and which we never expected so strongly from these guys! Titles include "O Samba Me Traiu", "Ferro Na Boneca", "Eu De Adjetivos", "Outro Mambo Outro Mundo", "Colegio De Aplicao", "A Casca De Banana Que Eu Pisei", "Juventude Sexta E Sabado", and "De Vera". OrlandivoOrlandivo (1977) ... CD
Copacabana/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
A sweet funky classic from 70s Brazil – one of those records that's found thousands of funky fans over the decades – and which still continues to please! The set's the best-ever from Orlandivo – a soulful singer whose set up perfectly here with funky backings from the great Joao Donato – working on organ and Fender Rhodes for the set, and hitting the same soulful styles as his own great 70s albums! Grooves have a sunny feel, but these jazz funk undercurrents that are completely infectious – wicked interplay between the bass and drums, guitar and keyboards – set to vocals from Orlandivo that clearly borrow some of Jorge Ben's soulful influence too. Other players include Sivuca on accordion, Durval Ferreira on guitar, and Helcio Milito on percussion – and titles include "Um Abraco No Bengil", "Palladium", "A Felicidade", "Tudo Joia", "Juazeiro", and "Bolinha De Sabao" – plus the great "Tamaco No Samba", which is a thinly disguised version of "Samba Blim". Som ImaginarioBanda Da Capital ... LP
Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
Really beautiful work from Som Imaginario – a progressive Brazilian group of the 70s, and one who also had strong ties to the world of Milton Nascimento as well! Milton's keyboard player Wagner Tiso is a key part of the record here – playing organ and electric piano – and the set also features wonderful sax and flute from Nivaldo Ornelas, who brings a lot of warmer, soulful currents to the set! The performance is a live one, and has a stile that's really cool – jazzier and more personal than some of the group's studio work at times – recorded in 1976, but issued here for the first time ever. Titles include "Sabado", "Imaginados", "Banda Da Capital", "Os Cafezais Sem Fim", "Xa Mate", and "Radio Guarany". LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Banda Da Capital (with bonus tracks) ... CD 13.99
