In the years immediately preceding the rise of the MPB giants of the post-Tropicalia years, Geraldo Vandre was one of Brazil's best talents, and an extremely strong singer/songwriter who managed to build a bridge from the bossa era to the present. An amazingly beautiful album, recorded by Vinicius De Moraes, Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro-Neves, and The Quarteto Em Cy for some sort of a special show. Castro-Neves provides some excellent bossa backing, the Quarteto girls sing chorus and over the top, Vinicius does some recitations, and Caymmi sings lead vocals. If the whole thing sound's a bit heavy-handed, it's not – and instead is an amazing batch of heavenly bossa-tinged tracks, with all the intelligence and imagination of the best titles on the Elenco label. The whole thing's extremely lively, and has an other-worldly sound that matches Vinicius' classic Afro Sambas LP with Baden Powell. An amazing tribute not just to the rich imagination of the young Egberto Gismonti – but also to the vivid sound of Brazilian music in the 70s! The album leaps past any easy definitions – as bits of jazz, MPB, serious scoring, folkloric styles, and other elements come into play – often in the space of a single song – and Gismonti's own keyboards and guitar are mixed with really collaborative efforts from Joyce, Danilo Caymmi, Marcio Montarroyos, and other leading lights of the Brazilian underground at the time! The tunes are quite visionary – in a way that's as sublime as Gismonti's legendary 1973 album – and production is other-worldly, at a level that few Anglo albums could hope to match at the time. Fabiano Do Nascimento picks up his groove here, but just slightly – adding in some slight percussion and gentle rhythms to his fantastic work on 7 string and 10 string guitar! The record's got all the lightness and charms of his previous sets, but also maybe has just a slightly larger rhythmic pulse – sometimes through added guitar from Daniel Santiago, who also brings a bit of midi to the mix – yet never in a way that overshadows the acoustic guitar at the core! The blend is almost as if a bossa nova guitar style was filtered through a Durutti Column aesthetic, but without vocals – on titles that include "Train To Imagination", "Thrdwrdl", "Babel", "Eterno", "Stranger Nights", "Blu's Dram", "3 Pontas", and "Aurora".
