✨✧ Gal CostaGal A Todo Vapor – Fa Tal ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful live set from 1971, featuring a very stripped down set of stuff. Gal comes in at first accompanying herself on guitar, then the band slowly joins in, but never really gets in the way of her voice. The sound is spare, and the production rough, and this one has a dark moody feel to it that you don't always get with her LPs. Tracks include "Falsa Baiana", "Coracao Vagabundo", "Como 2 e 2", and "Hotel Das Estrelas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dick FarneyEternally Stylish Dick Farney ... CD
El (UK), Mid 40s-Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A smooth batch of early work from Brazilian jazz and vocal mainstay Dick Farney – a collection of his wonderful vocal tunes and more jazz based work from the mid 40s through the mid 50s – collected from ultra rare releases of the time! The first half of the CD concentrates on his wonderful vocal tunes – steeped in mellow, expressive tunes ranging from stripped down piano and vocal ballads and some more lush material with strings. Dick's doesn't get his vocal props in our half of the globe – and here's hoping sets like this will spread the word! Titles include "Copabana", "Marina", "Uma Loura", "Nick Bar", "Mundo Distaste", "Perdido De Amor", "Tereza Da Praia" (Dick Farney & Lucio Alves), "Grand Verdade" and more. The 9 tracks that close out the CD concentrate on his jazzier side, with Dick on piano with his Quintet on the tracks "O Genio Da Marly", "Fique Calma", "Nervosinho" and more; the Dick Farney Quartet works the Gershwin songbook with "Strike Up The Band", "Oh Lady Be Good", Bt Not For Me" and "I've Got Rhythm". ✨✧ Bud ShankBossa Nova Years ... CD
Ubatuqui (Spain), Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from the man credited with the invention of bossa nova! Way back in the early 50s, Bud Shank cut some albums for Pacific Jazz in LA with guitarist Laurindo Almeida. These records mixed together Shank's flute and sax with lively guitar stylings by Almeida – and in many accounts, the recordings are quoted as being a seminal influence on the bossa scene in late 50s Brazil. No surprise, then, that when bossa broke in the US, Pacific Jazz took Shank back in the studio to cut more side in the same style – which is what you'll get on this excellent 2CD set! The work here ranges from 1962 to 1965 – and it features Shank playing in a number of groups: one with Clare Fisher piano, Larry Bunker vibes, and Milt Holland percussion; one with Fisher on piano and organ, Bunker on vibes, and Joe Pass on guitar; one with Joao Donato on piano and Rosinha De Valenca on guitar; and one with De Valenca on guitar and Sergio Mendes on piano. The 2CD set features 28 tracks in all – all pure stripped-down bossa jazz at its finest. Shank's a hell of a reed player – and the format gives him one of the best platforms to blow of his career. Titles include "Sambou Sambou", "Elizete", "Um Abraco No Bonfa", "Gostoso", "Joao", "Serenidade", "Silk Stop", "Sausalito", "Illusao", "Caminho De Casa", "Otem A Note", "Wistful Samba", "O Barquinho", and "Samba Guapo".
