Great keyboard funk from Deodato – one of his excellent mid 70s sessions for MCA, all of which are sometimes eclipsed by his CTI work, but still equally groovy! As with most of the other MCA records, the songs here are shorter than before – but in a way that allows for even more punch in the groove – especially on the bottom end of the tracks, which hit hard in a space that's somewhere between 70s soundtrack funk and more conventional fusion. The style's not nearly as slick as some of D's contemporaries were going at the time – and there's a nice range of material here that really makes for a complex vibe! A really stunning album from Bebel Gilberto, and one that sheds all the trappings of previous sets to get right to the core of her talents! The album's a tribute to her father, Joao Gilberto – as you might guess from the title – and the presentation of the music is often right up there with Joao's classic self-titled set from 1973 – very spare, often just voice and guitar – but in a way that somehow feels even richer than Bebel's music in any other sort of setting! Her voice has just gotten even more beautiful over the years, and more expressive too – and here, she works the kind of subtle magic that would have made Joao proud – on titles that include "Caminhos Cruzados", "Eclipse", "Voce E Eu", "E Preciso Predoar", "Adeus America", "O Pato", "Eu Vim Da Bahia", and "Ela E Carioca". A wonderful album by one of the all-time greats! The record is Joao Gilberto's best in years, and it was produced by Caetano Veloso – in a spare, stripped-down style that's very similar to Joao's classic self-titled album from 1973, with an equally moody sound overall! Veloso used some wonderful recording techniques – and Joao's warm vocals and haunting guitar work are handled in a manner that unlocks all of their dark beauty and charm – without any of the sweetness that sometimes holds back some of his other later recordings. An extremely poetic little set from Caetano Veloso – very personal, and with some nice play with language on some of the album's best tracks – almost recalling his best intimate moments of the 70s! A few tracks are a bit more upbeat – with keyboards and a bit more electricity – but most of the record really sparkles when Caetano keeps it cool – mostly using acoustic guitar in the background, and letting the raspy brilliance of his voice come to the forefront of the mix.
