✨✧ Bola SeteSamba In Seattle – Live At The Penthouse 1966 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Tompkins Square, Late 1960s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Bola Sete made some of his most important American recordings of the 60s on the San Francisco scene – but this huge set of unreleased tracks captures the Brazilian player farther up north, as he works in a sweet set of trio recordings captured at a small club in Seattle! The music is a great counterpart to some of Bola's recordings for Fantasy Records during the same time, but also captures the guitarist with a bit more complexity too – some of the qualities that he wouldn't always show on record at this level until the 70s, but which were clearly part of his sound right from the start! The group's a trio – with Sebastiao Neto on bass and Paulinho Magalhaes on drums – and titles include "Soul Samba", "Deve Ser Amor", "Malaguena", "Garota De Ipanema", "Astrurias", "Consolacao", "Tristeza", "A Feliciade", "Prelude No 3", "Spanish Dance No 5", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Satin Doll", "One Note Samba", and "Corcovado". ✨✧ Bola Sete (aka Djalma De Andrade)Ocean Memories ... CD
Samba Moon, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful batch of solo guitar recordings from Bola Sete – originally recorded at Fantasy studios, and first issued as the album Ocean on the Takoma label in 1975. This CD adds in a nice batch of 9 outtakes from the session, to create a whopping double CD set of 19 tracks, which is one of the best-ever chances you'll get to hear Bola Sete's solo guitar work. Sete's style had really matured by this point, and the CD is warmly introspective, and extremely beautiful. Titles include "Ocean Waves", "Guitar Lamento", "Let Go", "Xengo Xengo Xerengo", and "O Astronauto". CD
(Out of print. Digipak has a tear at the top corner.)

✨✧ Antonio Carlos Jobim & Luiz BonfaBlack Orpheus – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Verve, Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks ever – a record that set a whole new standard for audio representation of a film! The mad music for the set was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vincius De Moraes – and performed by Luiz Bonfa on guitar – but despite such prime bossa pedigree, the whole thing's got a sound that goes way beyond the familiar – a crazy mix of batucada percussion, samba rhythms, bossa guitar, and loads of sound effects from the film – so much so that the first half of the record is almost a sound-for-sound replication of the first 20 minutes of the movie! The sound collage is amazing – an extremely unique approach to soundtrack representation, and one that's never been done so beautifully since. A truly breathtaking record, filled with mindblowing sounds – and an early example of the genius that would explode in 60s music in Brazil. Some key bossa classics are represented here in early versions – including "Felicidade", "O Nosso Amor", and "Manha De Carnaval" – but they're wrapped up in odd sounds and rhythms that really make them sound different! Plus, this CD also includes a 13-minute medley of tracks from the score, performed by Bola Sete at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Fest! (Soundtracks, Brazil) CD

✨✧ VariousBrazilian Horizons Vol 2 ... CD
Milestone, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of jazzy Brazilian and bossa jazz numbers from the 60s onwards – all pulled from the rich catalog of Fantasy records – and related labels that include Milestone, Prestige, and Pablo! As with the first volume, there's a nice sense of evolution going on here, and a careful selection of less-obvious tracks – with an especially rare version of Jobim's "Dreamer", recorded as a 45 back in the 60s by Gary McFarland! Other titles include "Manha De Carnaval" by Freddie Hubbard & McCoy Tyner, "Bluchanga" by Mongo Santamaria & Joao Donato, "Samba De Orfeu" by Vince Guaraldi, "Tambu" by Cal Tjader & Charlie Byrd, "Nana" by Kenny Burell & Moacir Santos, and "Influencia Do Jazz" by Bola Sete. ✨✧ Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... CD
Copacabana/EMI (Brazil), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Titles include "Melancolia", "Franqueza", "Beija-Me", "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse", and "Tem Que Rebolar". CD
