VariousBeat Of Brazil – Brazilian Grooves From The Warner Vaults ... CD
Warner (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... $8.99
Brazilian grooves all over the place – and a wonderful assortment of tunes from the Warner, Atlantic, and Elektra vaults of the 60s and 70s! The set list goes way past the pop-bossa numbers that you might think from the cover, which is a cop from an old Atlantic compilation of the 60s – and includes some lesser-known tracks cooked up in Brazil during the 70s, as well as some of their American counterparts. Titles include "Celebration Suite" by Airto, "Jive Samba" by Jon Hendricks, "Eu Bebo Sim" by Osmar Milito, "Mr Funky Samba" by Banda Black Rio, "From The Lonely Afternoon" by Flora Purim, "Mas Que Nada" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Upa Neguinho (live)" by Elis Regina, "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim" by Joao Gilberto, "Crickets Sing For Anamaria (inst)" by Marcos Valle, "Manha De Carnival" by Louie Ramirez, "Barsanova Brown" by Eddie Cano, "Batuque" by Marcos Valle, and "Maria Fumaca" by Banda Black Rio. ✨✧ Sergio MendesBeat Of Brazil (aka Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada) ... LP
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early bossa jazz from Sergio Mendes – recorded with his famous Bossa Rio combo, in the years before he moved to America! The album's a classic in Brazilian jazz – a tight album of bossa-inflected jazz tunes played with razor-sharp precision, handled with a style that went on to influence countless other Brazilian groups at the time. Mendes is in the lead on piano, and other players include Edison Machado on drums, Raul De Souza on trombone, and Hector Costita on tenor sax. The whole thing's great – a masterpiece of both jazz and bossa – and it's filled with classic tunes arranged by Jobim, Moacir Santos, and Sergio himself. Titles include "Nana", "Primitivo", "Desafinado", "Ela E Carioca", "Amor Em Paz", "Noa Noa", and "Neurotico". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue & green label pressing. Cover has a center split on the bottom seam, but looks nice overall.)

✨✧ Nelsinho e Sua OrquestraBrazilian Beat Vol 2 ... LP
London (Brazil), 1968. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A great entry in this wonderful series – a tight set of batucada and percussion tracks, played by one of Brazil's more popular bandleaders, in a tight format that adds in some groovy touches! And also like the rest of these, this one's also got a few tasty orchestral tracks that push past the bossa groove, into a groovy post-bossa orchestral sound that's really nice and jazzy! The cuts on here with that feeling include great versions of "Upa Neguinho" and "Chove Chuva" – and the batucada tracks include "Ritmo", "Linda Mascarada", "Segura Este Samba", and "Sassaricando". (Cover has light surface wear & aging, light corner bends.)

✨✧ JazzinhoJazzinho (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Street Beat, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy, scatting, and wonderful! Jazzinho firmly carry the torch of 70s Brazilian jazz – picking up the sound that the music had just as it started to spill into European and American scenes, with bossa nova at the core, but lots of nice electric touches on the top! The group features some wonderful female lead vocals – very breezy, with a warm and sunny finish that really gives the record a wonderful feel. Instrumentation is strongly jazzy – not just beats and tricks – and honestly, the album's got a really solid 70s feel that makes us love it to death! Titles include "Vertigo", "Velejou", "Astral", "Yambou", "Sim Ou Nao", "Camponesa", and "Constelacao". This edition of the CD features four bonus remixes – "Sim Ou Nao" by Sleepwalker, "Constelacao" by Quant, "Sim Ou Nao by Eddy & Dus and "Yambou" by Phil Asher! (New Grooves, Brazil) CD

Billy BondBilly Bond Y La Pesada – Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Cloud Forest (New Zealand), 1970/1971. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Heady and heavy work from Billy Bond and La Pesada Del Rock & Roll – a guitar heavy group from Argentina, and one with plenty of blues rock overtones! The guitars are definitely turned up to 11 here – jamming with an intensity to match some of the best hard rock sides from Peru reissued by the Lazarus label in recent years – and like those sets, there's a sound here that's an intensification of earlier beat group modes – taken into much harder territory for the 70s. The production is great – earthy, trippy, and a little bit spooky – and the album's got an oddly unsettling feel, one that's familiar at first, but then increasingly estranged as the record moves on. Quite compelling, and with 16 tracks that include "Dueno De Tu Piel", "El Parque", "Buen Dia Senor Presidente", "Divertido Reventado", "Salgan Al Sol", "La Maquina", "Voy A Ver Un Amigo", "Para Que Nos Sirven", and "La Marcha De San Lorenzo". John Lester/Bill BellRitmos Quentes ... LP
Damic (Brazil), Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A really unusual jazzy Brazilian record! One side has tenorist Bill Bell blowing over some nice samba arrangements, mostly of Brazilian tunes – and the other side features trumpeter John Lester, echoing older American jazz modes, but with a groovier 60s beat! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is missing the plastic outer sleeve, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Chico Buarque & Ennio MorriconePer Un Pugno Di Samba ... CD
RCA/BMG (Brazil), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing record – one that stands as one of Chico Buarque's greatest from the 70s! The set was recorded in Italy in 1970 – and features Chico singing lead vocals over backings handled by Ennio Morricone – all in a style that's a perfect blend of MPB with the best elements of the Italian scene of the time! The songs are all originals written by Chico – and have a light and dreamy samba/bossa feel, one that's inflected by the off-beat orchestral style of Morricone, and supported by vocals from I Cantori Moderni. The feel is halfway between Chico's work on RGE and some of the dreamier Morricone soundtracks of the time – and it's a wonderful thing to have a strong male lead vocal over backings from Morricone – a really rare thing for the time, with results that are tremendous. Titles include "Rotativa", "Samba E Amore", "Nicanor", "Tu Sei Una Di Noi", "In Te", "Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio", and "Quete E Quelle". CD

Very groovy record that has Bola Sete's Brazilian guitar playing set amidst some smooth arrangements recorded in the Fantasy Studios of the early 70s. Bola plays acoustic and electric, and the group backing him includes Dwight Dickerson on keyboards, Hadley Caliman on tenor, and Luis Gasca on trumpet. Very nice stuff, and a record that doesn't show up much! Titles include "Shebaba", "It's Gonna Change", "Roda", "Street Market", and "Bola Beat". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AzymuthSpectrum ... LP
Milestone, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Proof that Azymuth were one of the few groups who could keep things real at a time when most of their fusion contemporaries were sounding cloying and commercial! The album's got a well-rounded sound that really shows the group's roots in the 70s, and their wonderful evolution over the years – that keyboard-heavy sound that's always warm and soulful, and never too tinny or beat-heavy. Jose Roberto Bertrami's keys come across with a 70s warmth that most groups were lacking by this time – and the backing from Alex Maheiros on bass and Ivan Conti is always very subtle, and simple too – swirled up alongside the keyboards, and mixed in with a few occasional bits of guest instrumentation – including trumpet from Marcio Montarroyos on one track, and flugelhorn from Paulinho Olivera on a few more. Titles include versions of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", Jobim's "Song Of The Jet", and Ivan Lins' "The Island", plus the cuts "Universal Prisoner", "Candomble", and "Areis". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a few rounded corners.)

✨✧ Bruno BerleNo Reino Dos Afetos ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really lovely little record – one that feels like an instant classic in the world of MPB – the sort of long-overdue new release by a Brazilian artist that we hope we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! As with the elite list of our Brazilian favorites of the past 20 years, Bruno's got a way of reaching into the past to grab just a bit here and there – then folds things together with a style that's crispily fresh, and very much his own – soulful, yet not mainstream soul at all – electronic at times, but with a warmly beating acoustic heart – and the kind of music that will grab you instantly upon first listen, at a level that our words could never hope to convey! Titles include "So Nois Dois", "Some Nyame", "Quero Dizer", "Ate Meu Violao", "Virginia Talk", "Sereno", "Arraiada", and "Beat 1". LP, Vinyl record album

Winter & Winter (Germany), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Uri Caine in a set of Brazilian jazz tunes – playing acoustic piano and Teclado Fender Rhodes – recorded in Brazil, with backing on guitar, bass, and lots of percussion. A number of the tracks have vocals in Portuguese – and the style of the music mixes the smoother sound you'd expect from Brazilian jazz, with some of the more off-beat touches you'll find in Caine's other work. Titles include "Teu Chamego", "Assalto Cultural", "Na Lapa", "Um Minuto So", "Adeus", "Samba Da Rua", "Choro Maluco", and "Revulucionario". (Jazz, Brazil) CD
