The book covers the entire history of Japanese jazz, from the first wave in the dancehalls of the 1920s, to the amazing renaissance of the 60s and 70s. It's a well-paced, incredibly researched, thoughtfully laid out story that we are glad to have had the opportunity to enjoy – with a lot history of that is deeply neglected in the Dusty Groove half of the world, if not everywhere. There are life stories of passionate, unrecognized musicians that mirror those in other parts of the world, as well as those unique to the Japanese experience. Atkins understands the artistic impulses of the musicians and followers, which is essential to the book's appeal to music freaks like us, but he's also an accomplished historian with a great capacity for conveying the nationalist cultural big picture. More than 350 pages, including the bibliography (which is worth the price alone) with a lot of amazing photos that help push the narrative along at a fast clip, not unlike a great piece of music! A nicely global look at the history of comics over the past 50 years – one that assumes from the start that the graphic medium is a worldwide one, which allows the authors to quickly move past overdone coverage of American giants from the time! The book begins in 1968 – a time when underground comix were already on the rise, and bigger US publishers were shaking it up – and things quickly jump overseas – to look at the amazing explosion of talent on the French and Italian scenes at the end of the 60s, the huge wave of British creativity in the 70s, and the ongoing changes in manga that took place over many decades. The writing is great – and very thoughtful – and the book is illustrated with examples throughout, both in color and black and white – with a very good balance between word and image. 317 pages, softcover. A tremendous look at an under-documented genre – the huge wave of Chicano soul that sprung up from LA, Texas, and other southern spots in the 50s and 60s – then went onto have a huge impact on wider culture in the mainstream! Although issued on an indie press, this book is top-shelf all the way through – beautifully packaged, with lots of color images, photos, and other visual bits that are as illuminating as the great writing from Ruben Molina. Molina really knows his music, and takes the whole thing up from its 50s roots into 70s superstardom – and even finishes the whole thing with a well-done discography at the end! 160 pages, softcover, with lots of images. Paul Morley wrote famously for the NME during the key years of punk, post-punk, and new wave – which makes him very able to draw a rich portrait here of contemporary and scenemate Tony Wilson – the man behind Factory Records, The Hacienda club, and a huge legacy of music in the 80s and beyond! Morley also helped form ZTT Records, and is very smart and well-read – and he brings in a surprising amount of theory and other references – really getting at the politics behind the art and business impulses of Wilson – in a very detailed book that's way more than you might expect! Morley also opens the door to other voices along the way – with occasional commentary from contemporaries – before dipping back in to this very deep, very well-written look at one of the most important figures on the UK scene during the late 70s and 1980s. This heavy, hardcover edition is a massive 604 pages, with some images in the middle. Book

This isn't the deep soul of the 60s – although many of the singers still have a wonderful vocal range – and the disc guide looks at rare LP releases and titles in other formats from different spots in the western hemisphere – tracing an evolution of soul music style across hundreds of individual entries for records – each of which are listed with a full color cover image, English language details on the dates, labels, and titles – and a small review in Japanese! You can read the review using a translate feature on your phone – but even without that, the book is a great guide for digging – and is especially helpful for tracking soul records of the past few decades that you might have missed. A well done book about the continuing importance of soul and R&B in black culture over the decades – one that begins its journey in the 70s, and moves right up to the present with a key chapter on the music in the post-George Floyd landscape in America! Author Alexander Ghedi Weheliye has a very particular bent at times – and the chapters work together more almost like related essays, instead of an exhaustive whole – a format that allows him to shift topics easily – between cellphones, new wave, remix technology, and diaspora – while still also bringing everything together through continuing themes, and copious notes that accompany the writings. The book also features two interviews, and directions to an accompanying playlist on Spotify – and this softcover edition is almost 300 pages, with some black and white images. Book
