Jazz CritiqueIssue 237 – Jazz Jacket Selection ... Book
Jazz Critique (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
This issue's got a special feature on unusual and noteworthy jazz record covers – served up by a host of different critics, who each pick three different records that are represented by small black and white images, along with label, artist, and title in English – and a longer essay in Japanese! As with other issues, there's a mix of visual information that will help you out if you're not a reader of Japanese – and these days, you can often use a translation program through your phone's camera to read bits that catch your eye. There's a small beautiful section of color images at the start – including covers for the Days of Delight label series – and the magazine also features listings for new albums too, all from a Japanese perspective. 184 pages, and bound like a paperback book. Robert Wyatt & Alfie BengeSide By Side – Selected Lyrics (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The music of Robert Wyatt often comes across with a surprisingly poetic quality – one that finally gets its due here in a well-presented book that mixes words from his songs with images and other writings – most done in collaboration with Wyatt's longtime creative partner Alfie Benge! The book's got much of the appeal of Robert Wyatt album covers and CD booklets over the past few decades – many of which have Benge's contributions too – and the artwork is just in just the right balance next to the words, which are further illuminated by some non-lyrical passages that are a great addition to the book. Hardcover volume is 191 pages, with black and white images scattered throughout! Book

Jim DineThis Goofy Life Of Constant Mourning (hardcover) ... Book
Steidl (Germany), 2004. New Copy ... $15.99 50.00
A book that's a piece of art in an of itself – as it's the only way these different strands of creative activity from artist Jim Dine could have come together! The approach is unusual – the book is something of a poem, but created from words that Dine wrote on various surfaces in various places over the years, which are then photographed, and assembled into a large book without any other text at all! At an initial level, the book feels like someone selecting images of scrawlings on walls, but together the images rise up as a creation of their own – both verbal and visual – in a really lovely clothbound book that comes in a heavy slipcover that's a perfect package for the contents. Jazz CritiqueIssue 233 – Two Horn Quintet ... Book
Jazz Critique (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A very unusual issue of this long-running jazz magazine – one that offers up a special selection of 100 key albums that boast a two-horn quintet – that is, a five piece group with a trumpet and a sax player in the lineup! As with other issues, this one begins with a full color section that features full color thumbnails of all the albums featured, then moves into a black and white section that offers up more details – including players, labels, dates, titles, and other information in English – plus a short review in Japanese, which you can read using Google translate on your phone. The artists range nicely – albums run from 50s classics on Blue Note through 70s Japanese masterpieces, to some more contemporary albums – and there's also other features and reviews too – in a book-style package, 200 pages, with black and white images throughout. Book
(Note that most text is Japanese – but using Google Translate or other programs via the camera on your phone, you should be able to make your way through the contents.)

Jonny TrunkAudio Erotica – Hi-Fi Brochures 1950s to 1980s ... Book
Fuel (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $24.99 34.95
A crazy idea for a book, but a great one too – and maybe the coolest so far from Jonny Trunk, the man who's given us lots of visual pleasure with his volumes on record store bags, candy bar wrappers, and automobile advertisements! This really beautiful book features four decades' worth of images used to promote stereos, turntables, and all things audio – tracing shifts in both style and technology, and advertising modes as well – all presented with an eye for the sensuous, as you might guess from the title! The ad selection is totally cool, and includes images from the US and UK, plus some key European audio companies too – all of whom are introduced with a bit of historical text that really helps you understand their contributions to the field. But even without that, this is still one hell of a book – like pulling all the best pages out of forty years of stereo magazines, and putting them together. Softcover, 239 pages, and full color throughout! Book

Adam White with Barney AlesMotown – Sound Of Young America ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2016. New Copy ... $31.99 45.00
A gorgeous visual celebration of the legacy of Motown – a huge full-color book that features rare photographs, magazine ads, record jackets, labels, and lots lots more – all presented with a history of the label as well! And yes, there have been plenty of books written about the legendary soul music label – but this one really knocks it out of the park with its huge selection of images – countless photos that we've never seen before, and all sorts of images and ephemera that really trace the history of the label in a way that's almost more detailed than the text inside. This heavy softcover edition is 400 pages in length, full color throughout – and a must for any fan of Motown! Book

✨✧ Philip K DickPhilip K Dick's Electric Dreams Vol 1 ... Book
Gollancz (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic fiction from one of the all-time greats – a special selection of short stories by the legendary Philip K Dick, brought together in conjunction with the anthology series inspired by these tales! Each of these stories is the basis for a different episode of the show Electric Dreams – and while that program had some great moments, nothing beats the originals – as Dick was a master of postwar paranoia and shifting reality – mapping the anxieties of 50s and 60s America onto the worlds of time and space. The stories are very well-chosen, and make the book a nice change from some of the other Philip K Dick short story collections out there – with titles that include "The Hanging Stranger", "Autofac", "Exhibit Piece", "The Hood Maker", "Human Is", and "The Commuter". Each story is accompanied by a small introduction – and the softcover book is 213 pages. Book

✨✧ Teruhiko YumuraGangsta Rap Cassettes ... Book
Ele-King (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Remember the days when hip hop was so underground, it was hard to get pressed on vinyl? And most of the audience wasn't going to play the music on CD – leaving tapes to be the main format to circulate the music back in the underground! This cool volume really digs deep into that musical moment – a cassette-sized book that offers up a guide to hundreds of rare gangsta rap cassettes – each presented with their full front artwork on the smaller pages – with English listings of the dates, title, artist, label, and location – and a bit of added text in Japanese (which you should be able to read using Google translate.) The book features listings for over 300 cassette-only releases – then also has a smaller section on the selectors' favorites at the end, plus an index of artists – all presented in a really great, all-color softcover volume!
