A work of fiction, but one that dives deep into the mind of Miles Davis, its main character – in a tale that begins with a police assault outside Birdland one night in August of 1959, then follows Davis as he reacts the the experience – moving around the city, and ruminating about his role in jazz and the impulses that have brought him so far. Author Wesley Brown takes a lot of liberty with dialogue and thoughts that might have been going through Miles' head – and romantic interest Frances Taylor figures strongly in the story as well. Some might argue for the opinions uttered by Davis in the story, and the tone he takes when speaking – but that's also part of the compelling quality of the book, and the risks it takes – imagining internal and external modes amidst a framework of actual events. 65 pages, hardcover. Book
A mighty hefty set of photos of Roxy Music on stage – served up in a massive oversize book that's filled with fan photos from the early days onward! Photographer Jocelyn Fiske has a lifetime love of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry – and managed to sneak some great shots of the group in the early 70s, then get very serious once their comeback years hit in the later part of the decade – served up here in hundreds of oversized, full color shots of the new romantic years, later solo Bryan Ferry, and even the 21st Century reunion as well! The images are striking – these are definitely not the polished shots of Ferry and the group on the album covers – and from the drenched look of Bryan on stage alone, the whole thing stands as a vivid testimony to the "work" that went into the music of Roxy! Hardcover edition is oversize, 317 pages, and full color throughout. Book
An insanely deep look at the rise of the "new romantics" on the British music scene at the end of the 70s – a book that's bigger than most we've seen on more "classic" rock figures and moments – and which really takes its project seriously! The book starts way before the early 80s pop hits that pushed the music on a global scene – and starts instead in the years before punk, when embers of glam and art rock were cooling down, and allowing some new ideas to rise up on the scene – artists and musicians who were carefully threading their way through the bigger waves of the late 70s, before finally getting their due in a huge moment at the start of the 80s. All the big names are covered here – Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Wham, Soft Cell, and many others – but Dylan Jones also really stretches the net wide, and does a great job of situating the music, and showing its influence at a level that's way different than any might have predicted at the time! The book is almost 700 pages, hardcover, with a big section of photos in the middle. Book
