A massive overview of modern art in late 20th Century China – put together by a gallerist who's helped open up this material to the world at large over the past few decades! The heavy volume is enormous, over 400 pages, and overflowing with color images – not just artworks, but photographs of performances and other creative actions – accompanied by a huge amount of history and analysis by Gao Minglu, who clearly knows his stuff! There's far more text than you'll find in the usual oversized art book, but the volume also doesn't skimp on images either – which makes for a very vivid history of a world that most of us would not experience otherwise. That's a pretty crazy image on the cover, and there's some pretty crazy images within – as this well-done book looks at the way the BBC conceived of presenting a public, permanent face to its ephmeral broadcast identity in the early 20th century – through the creation of the modernist masterpiece Broadcast House in London! Amazing images from the painter of the Bitches Brew album cover – the legendary Mati Klarwein – an artist with a very colorful style of painting nude bodies! Mati's artwork has graced many albums over the years – not just work from Miles Davis, but records by Buddy Miles, Jerry Garcia, The Chambers Brothers, and many others – all of which are presented here in a really well-done book – filled with vivid, colorful reproductions of the album covers in full 12" square size! The original package was put together in a limited pressing by a French gallery – but this version is much more affordable, and also features English notes as well – but all without sacrificing any of the printing quality at all. An incredible book from Nicole Mitchell – an artist that most know for her work as a jazz musician on flute, and a range of other musical projects – yet one who's developed into a cultural force far beyond music, as you'll see in this really groundbreaking literary project! The book works at so many different levels – part memoir, part scrapbook, part manifesto – as Mitchell mixes personal reflections with political statements, poetry, musical scores, photographs, and a variety of other writings – overflowing with the sorts of ideas that are only hinted at in some of her recent recordings, and which really come into much sharper focus here on the printed page! We're not normally ones to stock urban fire books here at Dusty Groove – but as you probably know, our hometown is Chicago, a city with a pretty incredible history – part of which is a fantastic fire that burned the whole place to the ground back in the 19th century! This huge book dives into great detail about the fire – its origins, its too-long burnout, initial failed efforts to stop it, and the surprisingly quick rise from the ashes that Chicago experienced as a result – as the city turned the tragedy into a way of rethinking and modernizing itself, which made it very well-poised to become a global powerhouse in years to come! Carl Smith tells the tale with a nicely narrative voice, while also showcasing the long research that went into the project – and this hardcover edition is 374 pages, with some black and white images.
