✨✧ Jazz CritiqueIssue 235 – European Swing ... Book
Jazz Critique (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
French jazz giant Barney Wilen is on the cover – and this issue of Jazz Critique looks at key records on the European scene from the postwar years onward! Given that "swing" is the mode here, there's not really any avant records – and instead the issue offers up a discography of players like Wilen, Lars Gullin, Dick Morrisey, Jimmy Deuchar, and others from the modern/hardbop moment of the 50s and 60s – plus some more contemporary artists too. Each record is presented with cover art and some details in English – plus a shorter review in Japanese – and the issue has a color section at the start, and other jazz features with images throughout the 192 pages within. ✨✧ Betsey KarelAmerica's Stage – Time Square (hardcover) ... Book
Steidl (Germany), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Even though the days of sleaze and sin are long gone, New York's Times Square still stands strong as one of the most vibrant spots in the world – a meeting place of so many faces, bodies, cultures, and styles – it's hard to think of any other place with so much going on! The images here are all contemporary, but they're really well-done too – and have a special eye for tying the Times Square of the present with currents of its past that still seep through – served up in an array of all black and white images, which really help create this time-shifting mode in the photos. The mix of images is great – street performers, solo individuals, and some really mindblowing full scenes that seem to have space folding in on itself – presented on lavish oversize pages, done in the best mode of art book giant Steidl press. ✨✧ Tom ScioliJack Kirby – The Epic Life Of The King Of Comics (hardcover) ... Book
Ten Speed Press, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A biography of one of the key creators in comics in the 20th Century – done in the format that he helped pioneer! The book is written in the first person – so more of an autobiography – although writer Tom Scioli provides all the words, and traces Kirby's evolution from a young child artist to a 40s giant in the new form of comic books, through his leaner postwar years, big 60s Marvel comics work, his 70s run at DC, and other moments too. Scioli really does a great job of opening up the intricacies of the comic business, and showing it's sometime seedier side – which illustrates some of the challenges that Kirby faced in his career, even while his work continued to be incredible. Hardcover edition is full color, 201 pages. Book

John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $25.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. Richard Morton JackLabyrinth – British Jazz On Record 1960 to 1975 ... Book
Lansdowne (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $114.99 124.99
A stunning book – even more amazing than we were expecting, and we were really expecting a lot! This is a heavy, hardcover, full color volume that takes a deep dig into the world of British jazz during some crucial modern years – presented with oversized images throughout, in the manner of some hefty art book from Taschen or one of those other fancy publishers! Author Richard Morton Jack presents listings for hundreds of crucial albums – each with both front and back cover artwork reproduced in full, in a size that's about a square 9" for most of the records, on pages that are much larger, with text at the bottom on each record, and even inner label reproductions! If you love Brit jazz from this period as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love – as the book contains listings for crucial records by giants like Joe Harriott, Stan Tracey, Graham Collier, Mike Westbrook, John Stevens, Don Rendell, and dozens of others – not just familiar albums, but really rare ones we've never seen before – work on the Lansdowne series on Columbia, and other labels that include RCA, EMI, Argo, and CBS – plus smaller indies too. The book is as beautiful as having an original pressing of one of these gems in your hands – and given that most of the originals go for hundreds of dollars, if/when you can find them, the book is a hell of a deal. Hardcover, 372 pages, and in full color throughout. Book

Dan Mazur & Alexander DannerComics – A Global History – 1968 To The Present ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2014. New Copy ... $12.99 39.95
A nicely global look at the history of comics over the past 50 years – one that assumes from the start that the graphic medium is a worldwide one, which allows the authors to quickly move past overdone coverage of American giants from the time! The book begins in 1968 – a time when underground comix were already on the rise, and bigger US publishers were shaking it up – and things quickly jump overseas – to look at the amazing explosion of talent on the French and Italian scenes at the end of the 60s, the huge wave of British creativity in the 70s, and the ongoing changes in manga that took place over many decades. The writing is great – and very thoughtful – and the book is illustrated with examples throughout, both in color and black and white – with a very good balance between word and image. 317 pages, softcover.
