Neal Samors has given us some very cool books on the history of Chicago over the years, but this book may well be one of the coolest – as it's an overview of famous nite spots, clubs, and other venues that provided entertainment during the postwar years – all presented on large pages with lots of images of the famous locations! The book begins with a chapter on jazz clubs that's worth the price of admission alone – as it has sections on Mister Kellys, Club DeLisa, The Beehive, and other spots you might know from famous jazz recordings – and the book follows with sections on folk clubs, rock venues, comedy spots, and lots more – all with lots of writings on the spots, great vintage photos, and memories from some key musicians too. A book that's almost 100 years old, but which still has a resonance all these many years later – a fantastic look at the underground of hoboes, hustlers, and hoods in the early 20th Century – penned by a newsman who spent plenty of time riding the rails himself! There's nothing too polished or sentimental about the book at all – and Jack Black really tells it like it is, in a way that was a huge influence to the beats and generations of writers over the years – including William S Burroughs, who provides an introduction to the whole thing! Journalist Philip Clark spent a good deal of time with piano legend Dave Brubeck in his later years – then did a really wonderful job of going backwards, and putting together all the many pieces of Dave's musical puzzle! There's no doubt that Brubeck was one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th Century – especially in the 50s and 60s – but Clark also really helps us understand why that is, and paints a picture of Brubeck's music and influence that stretch far beyond the smaller world of modern jazz! BB King is a blues musician with a much richer story than most – one that's captured here in very vivid detail by the author, as he mixes together a wealth of historical research with quotations from interviews and other materials too – all of which really makes the long journey of BB King come alive, as he shifts from roots in the south to the Memphis scene, then California, then superstardom that made him one of the biggest blues figures of the 20th Century! There's a great flow to the book – down to earth details that really make you feel like you're following King on his rise to fame – yet the big section at notes also indicates that the author wasn't just throwing stories out there without any support, and did plenty to weave the whole thing together with an eye for the facts. A huge testament to the power of New York City in American music – especially during those 20th Century years when the city was able to foster scene after scene, style after style – serving as a launchpad for sounds that would forever transform the world! The book looks at Latin, bebop, folk, doo wop, punk, disco, and other styles from the pre-hip hop years – and traces the way that local styles became national ones, via the recording opportunities and entertainment showcases that were unique to NYC! A massive overview of modern art in late 20th Century China – put together by a gallerist who's helped open up this material to the world at large over the past few decades! The heavy volume is enormous, over 400 pages, and overflowing with color images – not just artworks, but photographs of performances and other creative actions – accompanied by a huge amount of history and analysis by Gao Minglu, who clearly knows his stuff! There's far more text than you'll find in the usual oversized art book, but the volume also doesn't skimp on images either – which makes for a very vivid history of a world that most of us would not experience otherwise. A fascinating look at the world of Mexican music in the 20th Century – put together in collaboration with Arhoolie Records, the label that's done plenty to reissue the music over the years! The book begins with the huge archive of recordings by the label's founder, Chris Strachwitz – then takes off in a number of different streams – providing historical context, critical evaluation, and even some discographical details – in the form of various lists and sections of music. The book looks at some key styles too – including corridos and mariachi, traced both through Mexican recordings, and US singles by Mexican-Americans – and the whole thing is only the tip of the iceberg, in relation to the 40,000 recordings that have been digitized by the University Of California Library as part of the project. Still, there's plenty here to get you started – a huge amount of information that's even more inspirational than some of Arhoolie's great reissues over the years – in an oversized book that's 226 pages, softcover, with many black and white images too. The lovely Francoise Hardy is one of our favorite singers in 60s French pop – and here she tells the story behind her music and her long and storied career – all with a voice that's nicely different than the one she uses in her tunes, and which gives us a whole different version of an artist that we already love! This is the first translation of Hardy's book into English, done by Jon E Graham – and the story moves up to the final years of the 20th Century, and offers a glimpse into Francoise life long past her hit records on the charts, to show the evolving challenges and triumphs of an artist who kept on creating, and challenging the world around her. 309 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. We're not normally ones to ooh and ah over hotels – but they do tend to be some of our favorite semi-public spaces in big cities, and this wonderful book looks at a time when lodging was really stepping up to the next level – as firms like Schultze & Weaver were redesigning hotels as palaces in the sky! The book features entries on a host of classic architectural projects from the 20s in Havana, New York, Miami, and other cities – famous spots that include the Hotel Pierre, Waldorf Astoria, Breakers, Biltlmore, and Nautilus – each of which get their own chapter, complete with amazing images of interiors and exteriors, vintage advertising, and details on the buildings – preceded by a large section on Schultze & Weaver, and the development of new standards and styles for hotels in the early 20th century. A really beautiful story of a life well-lived in jazz – the autobiography of our hometown hero Ramsey Lewis, done in collaboration with jazz writer Aaron Cohen – who really helps bring a lot out of Ramsey's story! Lewis passed on before the book was finished, but managed to lay out some well-done passages about his life and music – a story that's maybe as much that of Chicago in changing years of 20th Century culture as it is that of the famous pianist himself – augmented with snippets of recollections from associates and contemporaries – never used too heavily, in the way that some books do to prop up flimsy writing – and instead, interspersed in just the right way, to bring some added spice to the tale. Ramsey was always one of the most articulate cats on the scene, and his presentation of the material is great – very straightforward, but also very thoughtful – and full from some of the overdone cliches that sometimes creep into music autobiography. Aaron Cohen provides a great introduction to the material, and after thoughts on notes and process – and this softcover edition has a small section of black and white photographs as well. Book

The mighty Sun Ra is on the cover, and also famously named a record Magic City – which was also the nickname of his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama – a city that gets plenty of coverage here for its long musical legacy! Birmingham was given the "magic city" nickname late in the 19th Century, when it was experiencing a great economic boom – one that helped attract folks from all over the south, and made the city a cultural crossroads for many years to come – especially when it came to jazz, where Birmingham was one of the most important scenes in the south for part of the 20th Century. In addition to the relationship between the city and Sun Ra, the book also features a long lineup that includes Joe Guy, Teddy Hill, Erskine Hawkins, Fess Whatley, Avery Parrish, and others – in histories that criss-cross, overlap, and extend with influences far past the city. A biography of one of the key creators in comics in the 20th Century – done in the format that he helped pioneer! The book is written in the first person – so more of an autobiography – although writer Tom Scioli provides all the words, and traces Kirby's evolution from a young child artist to a 40s giant in the new form of comic books, through his leaner postwar years, big 60s Marvel comics work, his 70s run at DC, and other moments too. Scioli really does a great job of opening up the intricacies of the comic business, and showing it's sometime seedier side – which illustrates some of the challenges that Kirby faced in his career, even while his work continued to be incredible. An unusual little book – one that's partly an instruction guide, but also a great look at the power of posters in the 20th century – filled with historical examples that are used alongside the oversized pages on instruction! The text within is relatively loose and open – presented poster-style, really – but it does a good job of structuring the presentation of other materials, with is very vivid throughout – and pretty interesting, even if you never plan on making a poster yourself! But if you do, the book's also pretty handy too – because the pages are all nice and thick, and you could easily cut them out, pull them apart, and use them for letters, stencils, or whatever else you might need for a poster too. 119 pages, softcover, in color. Bob Stanley's turned us on to plenty of great music over the years – via countless compilations on Ace Records, Cherry Red, and other labels – but this time around, he's going way way back – to look at the American scene in the early part of the 20th Century! Stanley argues that stardom in music existed way before rock and roll – and looks first at the creation of the 78rpm record, then sounds from artists who include Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Duke Ellington – next to some lesser-known artists, key songwriters, and other forces shaping the cultural scene at the time. Stanley really moves around a lot – even touching on hillbilly music, Broadway, and films as well – all with a dexterity and love of the music that almost rivals Nick Tosches in similar territory. That's a pretty crazy image on the cover, and there's some pretty crazy images within – as this well-done book looks at the way the BBC conceived of presenting a public, permanent face to its ephmeral broadcast identity in the early 20th century – through the creation of the modernist masterpiece Broadcast House in London! The book begins with the construction of that landmark building, then moves on to other topics that deal with the interplay between the new ideas on radio and the shifting setting of London in the years before and through WWII – served up here with black and white images alongside some very well-penned critical text by the author. 331 pages, hardcover, with black and white images.
