The company is known both for its groundbreaking work in the romance comics field, and for its stunning artists – who include the legendary Matt Baker – and the author serves up the book in a series of interviews with creative talents – illuminating their own contributions, and providing especially great details of those who passed all too soon – including Baker and publisher Archer St John. The book has images from comics all the way through, all in black and white – and the whole thing's a great read if you love the behind the scenes stories of comic creation as much as we do. Robert Christgau is one of the coolest music writers of all time – a hugely important force for decades, through his work in the Village Voice – where he helped shape acceptance and understanding of generations of new sounds – and a contributor to other publications and broadcast outlets, where his voice is always one of the smartest in the room! And while we've always dug what Christgau has to say about other folks, it's also pretty great to read his own story, too – a life spent living in New York, where his path crossed countless other cultural figures and moments, apart from the music and musicians you might expect. There have been plenty of Prince books written over the years, but Neal Karlen was the journalist that the singer first let get really close to him in his early days – a status that really comes through here in the details of the book! As the title indicates, the volume is more about the creative journey of the man himself, sometimes away from the limelight – and the author is not afraid to write in the first person at times, showcasing his access to Prince and his experience with the musical legend as he evolved his style and faced new creative crossroads over the years. Jorma Kaukonen may not have the catchiest name in rock music, but his guitar playing is the stuff of legend – first a driving force in the young Jefferson Airplane, then getting even great showcase in his own Hot Tuna – both the kind of groups from which classic rock record collections of risen! Jorma tells the tale of his life and music here – at a level that's longer than you might expect, given that he's still out there playing and touring – after years of famously being part of the San Francisco scene from the mid 60s onwards! MC Buddah Monk was a childhood friend of Ol Dirty Bastard, and spent a fair bit of time right alongside him during the glory days of the Wu-Tang Clan – so he's got a pretty great perspective of Dirty's life and music – even though his story is somewhat personal overall! Writer Mickey Hess helps give shape to Buddha's memories, and the book may not be one of the most authoritative reads on Ol Dirty Bastard, but it's certainly one of the more entertaining! 192 pages, softcover, with some color images. Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah has made some great music of his own, but over the years he was also a key player in the legendary Arkestra of Sun Ra – and this unique volume is maybe one of the first books ever to really get at what life was like as a member of that legendary ensemble! The book is incredible – very open and honest about many issues, not just music – and it's also huge, too – over 500 pages, originally written by Abdullah in the 90s, with help from poet Louis Reyes Rivera, and finally published after all these many years! The book is very narrative, and gets at some of the lifestyles and theories behind the Arkestra – which have never been recounted in such great detail, and with such a focus on the way their fame and music intersected with everyday life. The book also features a huge section of photos and images – over 50 pages in all – and the whole thing is a long-overdue, much-needed look at Sun Ra, his legacy, and the career of Ahmed Abdullah too! A really beautiful book, and one that's quite different than most other jazz books we can think of – in that it approaches its main subject matter from many different directions, in a way that actually proves to be more illuminating overall! As the title implies, the book looks at the huge run of recordings that avant pianist Matthew Shipp has done for the Rogue Art label – and author Clifford Allen begins with a look at Shipp himself, then his New York setting, then interviews with collaborators who include Whit Dickey, William Parker, Joe Morris, and Rob Brown – before then moving on to look at the Rogue Art label, through an interview with its founder – then ending with page after page of liner notes for Shipp albums on the label – including a few that haven't been released yet! The presentation is very smart, and really opens up Shipp's creative process in a great way – and this softcover edition is 207 pages, with some black and white images. Book

A fantastic look at the underground world of jazz record bars in Tokyo – served up here in a stunning array of full color photographs that showcase dozens of spots! The book is a great document of the "jazz kissa" – small bars where the owner is a lover of music, has a huge jazz record collection, and pours out drinks while spinning records in a very intimate, laidback space! Most of these club have stunning sound systems – often pictured in the book – and they are tiny, with just a few seats for drinkers/listeners – which makes the experience of enjoying a classic jazz record there feel even more unique. There's a bit of text, but most of the hardcover volume is full color photographs – presented in beautiful artbook style. Book
