✨✧ Arizona DranesHe Is My Story – The Sanctified Soul Of Arizona Dranes (CD & book) ... CD
Tompkins Square, Mid 20s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing document from Tomkins Square – and a set that goes even beyond the usual high level of some of the other releases from the label! The set's a beautiful archival project – one that seeks to resurrect the rare music of Arizona Dranes – a gospel pianist and vocalist who recorded briefly in the 20s – on an obscure set of 78rpm releases that were only captured through acoustic technology. Dranes has an incredible approach – both to the piano, which is more bluesy – or almost boogie-woogie at times – and to her vocals, which have an unbridled soul that really comes through, even with the lower level of recording. The set was put together by journalist Michael Corcoran – who spent years looking into Dranes life, and wrote the notes for the 44 pages that come in the book-style package, which also includes some rare photos. 78s were remastered brilliantly – and titles include "He Is My Story", "Just Look", "God's Got A Crown", "My Soul Is A Witness For The Lord", "Don't You Want To Go", and "I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go". (Gospel, Blues) CD

Wes MontgomeryIn The Wee Small Hours (aka Fusion) ... LP
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A pretty darn important album for Wes – as it was his first session with the sort of larger arrangements that would later make him huge! Although Montgomery was mostly recording for Riverside in small combos, this session has him playing in front of larger backings by Jimmy Jones – not as sublime as later work by Don Sebesky or Gil Evans, but done in a way that definitely shows that Wes can do a lot with the guitar when freed from the need to stick with the rhythm strongly. Titles include "All The Way", "Pretty Blue", "Somewhere", "God Bless The Child", "Tune Up", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". (Jazz, Blues) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 60s Riverside/ABC issue. Cover has light wear and a small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Otis SpannBest Of The Vanguard Years (Blues Today Vol 1/Cryin Time/bonus tracks) ... CD
Vanguard, 1960s. Used ... $9.99
A great selection of work from Chicago blues giant Otis Spann – with three unreleased bonus tracks too! First up are five tracks from Spann's contributions to the album Chicago The Blues Today Vol 1 – material that just features Otis on vocals and piano, with some raw drums from SP Leary behind his lead – on titles that include "SP Blues", "Sometimes I Wonder", "Marie", and "Burning Fire". Next up is the full album Cryin Time – a real killer from the great Otis Spann – one of his tightest, funkiest records of the 60s – recorded in Chicago with a very Chess-like vibe! Otis is in the lead on piano and vocals – plus a bit of Hammond too – and the small combo backing is nice and tight, with Lonnie Taylor on drums, Barry Melton on lead guitar, and additional guitar from Luther Johnson to help fit into the groove! Lucille Spann sings on two tracks, but most of the energy comes from Otis' bold lines on piano, and his raw, soulful singing – on cuts that include "The New Boogaloo", "Home To Mississippi", "Some Day", "Twisted Snake", "Mule Kicking In My Stall", and "Blind Man". CD also features the unreleased tracks "My God", "Blues Jam", and "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands". CD
(Out of print.)
