A great little set that really lives up to the promise of its title – and it's claim to offer up "commercial recordings of Anglo-European American vernacular music that challenges the stereotypes"! The set's a wealth of obscure 78rpm recordings that really defy genre convention – and which show that the 20s was easily one of the most experimental times in American music – a point when later common styles were really quite new, and still very fluid – bits of later blues, folk, or country intermingling equally – often from sources that you wouldn't expect a decade or two later. These tracks are all acoustic, but feature really inventive instrumentation – especially when modes of a generation or two before are pushed into new phrasings with decidedly (then) modern flavors. As usual with these Tompkins Square reissues, the sound quality is great – and the package offers up some good notes to help situate the music too. Late work from RL Burnside – done in that raw, raspy style that really helped set fire to the second half of his career! The production and instrumentation show a bit of the attention that Burnside was getting from the indie rock world – but at the core of the record, the vocals and songwriting are rock-solid – and stand as a nicely earthy, almost timeless counterpart to some of the fuzzier guitar in the mix. There's a few great moments where RL speaks a bit at the start of tunes, which really grounds the proceedings – and titles include "RL's Story", "Hard Time Killing Floor", "Got Messed Up", "Nothin Man", "Too Many Ups", and "See What My Buddy Done". A bit blues, a bit jazz – and a singer with a style unto her own – the amazing Big Maybelle, one of the greatest artists to record for Okeh Records in the 50s! This well-done collection pulls together every single Maybelle recorded for the R&B powerhouse back in the day – a motherlode of great work that easily puts her right up there with Lavern Baker or Ruth Brown as one of the great female singers of the 50s. The package features a whopping 26 tracks in all – including many bits that get lost between the tracks in some of the too-sifted collections of her work from the time. Beautiful late work from Lonnie Johnson – recorded decades after his bigger years on record, but handled with great care by Prestige Records, during the brief run of its Bluesville imprint! Like most of the rest of the sides at the time, the approach here is to make an older mode live again – and rather than slavishly aim for the old days, Johnson sings and plays in a way that shows that he's still a very vibrant talent – offering up new music at most points, and making the best of the newer recording techniques to show off the strength of his talents on acoustic guitar! Victoria Spivey joins in on two duets, and gets to sing one other song herself – and apart from some piano from Cliff Jackson, there's no other instrumentation at all on the record. If you've never got the concept of a string band, this is the record to really illuminate your ears – as it features a beautiful set of stripped-down sides by the Mississippi Sheiks – all recorded in the early 30s, and a wonderful blend of bluesy inflection and folksy roots! Most tracks just features guitar, violin, and some especially great vocals – pushed with lots of delta-styled elements on the edges, but set to music that's got plenty of touches from the other side of the fence. The blend is wonderful, and the set features tracks recorded in Grafton, Wisconsin in July of 1932, Chicago in June of 1933, and San Antonio in 1934.
