✨✧ Lonnie Johnson with Victoria SpiveyIdle Hours ... CD
Prestige/Bluesville, 1961. Used ... $4.99
Beautiful late work from Lonnie Johnson – recorded decades after his bigger years on record, but handled with great care by Prestige Records, during the brief run of its Bluesville imprint! Like most of the rest of the sides at the time, the approach here is to make an older mode live again – and rather than slavishly aim for the old days, Johnson sings and plays in a way that shows that he's still a very vibrant talent – offering up new music at most points, and making the best of the newer recording techniques to show off the strength of his talents on acoustic guitar! Victoria Spivey joins in on two duets, and gets to sing one other song herself – and apart from some piano from Cliff Jackson, there's no other instrumentation at all on the record. Titles include "Long Time Blues", "You Are My Life", "Idle Hours", "Leave Me Or Love Me", "No More Cryin", "I Got The Blues So Bad", and "End It All". CD

✨✧ Lonnie Johnson & Elmer SnowdenBlues & Ballads ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rootsy blues from the brief stretch when Prestige Records was experimenting with non-jazz material – a back-to-basics session that features Johnson on electric guitar and vocals, Snowden on acoustic guitar, and only Wendell Marshall's jazz-trained bass to back the pair up. The work's in a style that's rootsier than the mainstream – almost an imagined past for this sort of blues, and one that was more aimed at the college and folksy crowd of the time than anyone else. Titles include "Savoy Blues", "I'll Get Along Somehow", "Haunted House", "Memories Of You", "I Found A Dream", and "Blues For Chris". CD

✨✧ Otis SpannBest Of The Vanguard Years (Blues Today Vol 1/Cryin Time/bonus tracks) ... CD
Vanguard, 1960s. Used ... $9.99
A great selection of work from Chicago blues giant Otis Spann – with three unreleased bonus tracks too! First up are five tracks from Spann's contributions to the album Chicago The Blues Today Vol 1 – material that just features Otis on vocals and piano, with some raw drums from SP Leary behind his lead – on titles that include "SP Blues", "Sometimes I Wonder", "Marie", and "Burning Fire". Next up is the full album Cryin Time – a real killer from the great Otis Spann – one of his tightest, funkiest records of the 60s – recorded in Chicago with a very Chess-like vibe! Otis is in the lead on piano and vocals – plus a bit of Hammond too – and the small combo backing is nice and tight, with Lonnie Taylor on drums, Barry Melton on lead guitar, and additional guitar from Luther Johnson to help fit into the groove! Lucille Spann sings on two tracks, but most of the energy comes from Otis' bold lines on piano, and his raw, soulful singing – on cuts that include "The New Boogaloo", "Home To Mississippi", "Some Day", "Twisted Snake", "Mule Kicking In My Stall", and "Blind Man". CD also features the unreleased tracks "My God", "Blues Jam", and "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands". CD

VariousNew York City Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A deep look at a blues scene that doesn't always get its due – music not from Chicago, Memphis, or various points south – but some nicely gritty tracks that were cut in New York during the postwar years! Despite New York's fame as a hub of jazz, soul, and other styles – the city also had a surprisingly strong blues scene in the 50s and 60s, which is when most of these tracks were recorded – music that's both in the electric modes that were showing up in other urban centers at the time, and also in some more traditional modes that were sometimes left behind in other cities – but which got a nice revival in New York, thanks to an interest in folk blues from the underground! Material here was originally recorded by a range of different labels – Old Town, Atlantic, Mercury, Prestige, Fire, Apollo, King, and Chess – and as you'd expect from Ace, there's also some unreleased material on the set, all presented with a great assortment of notes and details on every single track. 26 titles in all – with cuts that include "Bad Blood" by Champion Jack Dupree, "Step It Up & Go" by Blind Boy Fuller, "The Guy With A 45" by Allen Bunn & His Trio, "Stormy Monday Blues" by Bob Gaddy, "Kansas City March" by Wild Jimmy Spruill, "Four Women Blues" by Larry Johnson & Hank Adkins, "Idle Hours" by Lonnie Johnson with Victory Spivey, "Hard Times" by Noble Thin Man Watts, "Believe Me Darling" by June Bateman, "Security" by Tarheel Slim & Little Ann, "Jack That Cat Was Clean" by Dr Horse, and "Goodbye Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison. ✨✧ Jimmy ReedJimmy Reed At Carnegie Hall/Best Of Jimmy Reed (original master recording) ... CD
Vee Jay/Ultra Disc, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rollicking country-tinged blues from Jimmy Reed and an incredible group of backing musicians – actually not captured in the opulent grandeur of Carnegie Hall – and probably all the better for it! Prior to the original double LP release of Jimmy Reed At Carnegie Hall, Reed headlined a Blues At Carnegie Hall event, and though the performance was not recorded for a live album release he went on the cut a similar set list with varying players that included Lonnie Brooks, Phil Upchurch and Eddie Tayor on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass, Earl Phillips and Albert King on tracks. It's really wonderful stuff, obvious epiphany material for loads of rockers and young players on both the US and British blues scenes to come! 23 tracks in all: "Bright Lights Big City", "I'm Mr Luck", "Found Joy", "Kind Of Lonesome", "Tell Me You Love Me", "Hold Me Close", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "Blue Blue Water", "Hush Hush", "Found Love", "Honest I Do", "You Got Me Dizzy", "Boogie In The Dark", "Take Out Some Insurance", "The Sun Is Shining" and lots more!
