✨✧ Mickey ChampionBam A Lam – The R&B Recordings 1950 to 1962 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A huge batch of material from female R&B singer Mickey Champion – possibly best known for her work with Roy Milton, but presented here in a range of other singles as well! Mickey's got a style that's especially nice on the mellower, bluesier tunes here – tracks sung in a way that's almost a precursor to 60s female deep soul, but still with plenty of R&B overtones. Tracks on the set were originally issued on labels that include Modern, Aladdin, Dootone, RPM, and King – and the CD features mostly numbers done under Champion's name, plus a few more with Roy Milton or The Nic Nacs. 24 tracks in all – including "Bam A Lam", "Good For Nothin Man", "Best Friend", "Two Faced Daddy", "I've Got It Bad", "Lovin Jim", "If That's The Way You Feel", "If You Can't Hold Your Man With A Kiss", "Rockin Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu", "You're Gonna Suffer Baby", and "Don't Say You Love Me". (Soul, Blues) CD

✨✧ BB KingGreat BB King (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Crown/Ace (UK), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
The definitely got the title right here – as BB King is plenty great, and already a powerhouse in these early years of his career! King sprung forth from the Memphis scene almost fully-formed – and in addition to his famous guitar work, he was also a hell of a singer who could bring a new sort of soulful presence to blues music – able to croon with the charm of a jazz singer in the right moments, join with a doo wop group at others, yet come on with the power of a bluesman whenever he stepped in front of the mic! This great album has BB in all these modes – recorded with brilliantly bold sound – and titles include "I Had A Woman", "Sweet Sixteen", "Someday Baby", "I'm Gonna Quit My Baby", and "I Was Blind". CD features 8 bonus tracks – including "Down Now", "Bim Bam", "Young Dreamers", "Shotgun Blues", "Woman Don't Care", and "Broke & Hungry" – some in rare unissued takes. CD

✨✧ Roy MiltonRoy Milton Rocks ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Roy Milton definitely rocks, even though he wasn't a rocker at all – and instead was one of the key artists in postwar R&B who helped really chart the course for other decades of musicians to follow! As you'll see from the image on the cover, Roy's a drummer, but his real strength is leading a tight small combo – effortlessly blending together influences from jazz and blues in the years before soul, and really setting loose with both searing instrumental solos and great lead vocals – including work from Camille Howard, who also plays piano in his combo! The package features a whopping 31 tracks in all – with material from both his Specialty and Dootone years, on titles that include "One Zippy Zam", "Train Blues", "It's Later Than You Think", "Succotash", "Wakin Up Baby", "Big Fat Mama", "Red Light", "Hop Skip & Jump", "Junior Jumps", "Train Blues", "Bam A Lam", and "Baby I'm Gone". ✨✧ Magic SlimHighway Is My Home ... CD
Evidence, 1978. Used ... $6.99
At the time of this set, Magic Slim called Chicago his home – but the title may well be apt, as the set was recorded overseas in the Barclay Studios in Paris, at a time when Slim was hitting the highway to reach a wide global audience with his music! Despite that displacement, though, there's a very rooted vibe to the whole set – a searingly tight quartet performance that features Slim on guitar and vocals, Alabama Junior on second guitar, Nick Holt on bass, and Fred Below on drums – a rock-solid group who are captured here without any trappings at all – just a core focus on the sorts of sounds that Magic Slim would deliver to an intimate crowd back home. Titles include "I Love You Baby", "Living In My Neighborhood", "Highway Is My Home", "I'm Mad", "Tell Me Baby", "Man Or Mouse", and "Country Girl". CD

✨✧ VariousNuggets Of The Golden Age Of Gospel 1945 to 1958 (4CD set) ... CD
JSP, Late 40s/1950s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
They definitely got the title right on this one – as the box set's overflowing with rare gospel tunes from the late 40s and 1950s – a period when the style was really coming into its own, thanks to a confluence of great talents, key songwriters, and important indie labels! The package was put together and annotated by Opal Louis Nations, who clearly knows his stuff – and the 4CD set features 105 tracks in all, all remastered too! Includes work by Deep River Boys, The Charioteers, Hazel Chatman, Five Blind Boys Of Alabama, Brownie McGhee, Golden Gate Quartet, The Orioles, Dixie Hummingbirds, Golden Melodeers, and many others.
