A set that features 15 tracks from Wayne Shorter's early years recording for Vee Jay Records! Some of the work is from the Introducing Wayne Shorter album – the birth of a genius! From the vantage point of the 21st century,Wayne Shorter hardly needs any introduction – but when he recorded this debut album in the late 50s, Shorter was just the new kid on the block – making a few important waves as the tenor star in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The album wisely works off that fame, and pairs Shorter with co-Messenger Lee Morgan – in front line on the trumpet – but it's also got a slightly different groove too, thanks to a rhythm team that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The Kelly trio approach makes for a nice change from the Blakey mode – and Shorter more than follows suit by blowing some wonderfully well-crafted solos, and working in a more introspective soul mode – really pointing the way towards his later genius as a leader on Blue Note. Shorter also emerges as a heck of a great writer too – contributing 5 great original tracks to the set, titles that include "Blues A La Carte", "Harry's Last Stand", "Black Diamond", "Pug Nose", and "Down in The Depths". The set also features material from the album Wayning Moments – a great early set which features playing by Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Higgins, and Jymie Merritt – is filled with haunting original compositions ("Devil's Island", "Dead End", "Powder Keg") and the kind of mature playing that you'd hardly expect from a little tike like Shorter (who, with Lee Morgan, was just a kid when the two of them were playing with Art Blakey). The only session we've ever seen by trumpeter Don Sleet – an early 60s talent who played in the group of drummer Lennie McBrowne, and who's working here with an all-star quartet that includes Jimmy Heath on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums! Sleet's style is quite nice – well-focused at all the right moments – but the real winner on the album is Heath, who solos in an edgey mode that really holds our attention, and which is in the best raspy style of his early work! A seminal early recording from one of our favorite reed players ever! In the late 1950s, the young Frank Strozier came up to Chicago from Memphis, along with his longtime friend, pianist Harold Mabern. The two of them both settled nicely in the city's MJT+3 combo, where they proceeded to record some incredible hardbop sessions for Vee Jay. During that same time, Strozier began to emerge as a strong soloist and a competent leader in his own right, and Vee Jay gave him a much-needed crack at this debut album. The session's a perfect showcase for Strozier's lyrical beauty, and given the quality of the work, it's a wonder he was never more famous. The group's a quintet, and Strozier's ably teamed with Booker Little, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. Titles include "WK Blues", "Waltz Of The Demons", "Runnin", and "Off Shore". Love is a many splendored thing – and so is the mighty piano work of Kunihiko Sugano – a great Japanese player from the 70s, but one who never got much exposure on our shores at the time! This live album really shows Sugano at his best – balancing a talent for flowing, lyrical moments with a tighter sense of a groove – laid down perfectly by a combo that features conga added to the usual lineup of bass and drums! Most tunes are nice and long, and begin with a solo statement by Kunihiko – then snap into a groove that really takes off nicely. Titles include the original "Blues For Wynton Kelly", a side-long reading of "Perdido", and versions of "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" and "Autumn Leaves". CD

A real stormer! This was one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by the great hardbop drummer Art Taylor – and it's one of the best from the Blue Note catalog at the time! The band is a heavily smoking one – with Dave Burns on trumpet, Stan Turrentine on tenor, and Wynton Kelly on piano – and Patato Valdez backs them up on conga on a number of tracks, too. The whole thing is perfectly put together, with an insanely tight rhythm line, and perfectly placed solos by Turrentine and Burns – really cooking with an intensity that matches some of the best Jazz Messengers albums of the time. Features a great version of Coltrane's "Syeeda's Song Flute", plus the tracks "Cookoo & Fungi", "Blue Interlude", and "Move". LP, Vinyl record album

Probably the best jazz album that Phil Upchurch ever cut! Phil plays in two settings here – one with a funky large group, arranged and conducted by Ed Bland (who did a lot of the work for Perception records in the early 70s) – the other with a quintet that includes Wynton Kelly, Richard Davis, Jimmy Cobb, and Montego Joe! To our ears, the best stuff's the large group material, because Upchurch's years of studio work seem to come to the forefront as he wails with the large arrangements – but the quartet material's also pretty darn great, as Phil rarely got a chance to play in such a tight small combo jazz setting, and Montego Joe's conga work really grooves those tunes up nicely as well! Excellent small group jazz work from Dinah – of the sort that's often quite tough to find on vinyl, and which represents some of her best work of all time! The album's got a good group of Mercury jazz players – like Clark Terry, Paul Quinichette, Cecil Payne, Wynton Kelly, and Jimmy Cobb – all playing in a laidback intimate setting which works very nicely for Dinah's soulful vocals. Titles include "Blue Gardenia", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "I Could Write A Book", and "Easy Living". A bit Billie Holiday-ish, sure – but nice! CD
