✨✧ Soul MerchantsLight My Fire/For Wes ... 7-inch
Weis, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A very mellow, very dope verson of the famous Doors song! The cut is all instrumental – with a slowly meandering guitar groove, and the kind of slow funk rendition that always makes the cut great as an instrumental! Right up there with the best Johnny Harris version, and with some cool Varitone work that's pretty darn tasty! "For Wes" is a great one too – with a killer slow dope guitar groove, supposedly in a Wes Montgomery mode, but much more in the vein of underground hipsters like Cal Green or O'Donel Levy! The arrangements have a slight Latin tinge – for a great bit of slow LA funk that's very very nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Red and tan label pressing. Vinyl has some oxidation.)

✨✧ Phil UpchurchLovin' Feeling ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Phil Upchurch's best records – and one that's a no-nonsense batch of funky instrumentals that feature some really great guitar! Phil's dropped the Hendrix fuzz of some of his Cadet sides of the late 60s – and instead, he's working in a stretched-out chromatic mode that has bits of Wes Montgomery and George Benson – but which also has some of the more soulful undercurrents of the great O'Donel Levy! The album's nicely laidback, and never too slick or smooth – and other players include Tennyson Stephens on Fender Rhodes, Lucy Scott on bass, Steve Cobb on drums, and Derf Reklaw on percussion. Titles include "Another Funky Tune", "I Still Love You", "Washing Machine", "Sitar Soul", and "Keep On Tripping". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sunao WadaBlues World ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from Japanese guitarist Sunao Wada – a player who's rich in tones and colors here, and not just the blue ones mentioned in the title! There's an open flow to the record that's really wonderful – maybe the maturity of the Wes Montgomery sound of the late 60s, but set up in an earlier sort of style – with Hammond from Ushio Sakai, bass from Mitsuaki Furuno, and drums from Arihide Kurata – all given the impeccable production touches you'd expect from the Three Blind Mice label! Takao Uematsu adds a bit of tenor to the record, and titles include "Now See How You Are", "Blues World", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Blues For Charlie Christian". CD
(Part of the Three Blind Mice Supreme Collection!)

✨✧ Chuck WayneMorning Mist ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic work from Chuck Wayne – one of the most overlooked jazz guitarists of his day! The album's a very laidback trio set – just guitar, bass, and drums – and Chuck plays in these blocks of color and tone – very much like Wes Montgomery, but a bit more fast paced and with some weird touches that make the album more interesting than you'd expect. Titles include "See Saw", "Shalimar", "Alone At Last", "The Song Is You", "Lovely", "I'll Get Along", and "Lil Darlin". CD

Prestige, 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Horace Silver in many flavors – a great range of jazz recordings from the Prestige/Fantasy catalog – all based around classic compositions by Silver! Horace was a Blue Note man, and never recorded for other labels back in the 60s – but his music had a huge reach for generations to come, as you'll hear on this great mix of cuts that includes soul jazz groovers, vocal numbers, and even the odd Brazilian bit too! ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonCruisin The Bird ... LP
Landmark, 1988. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record from Bobby Hutcherson – easily one of his best of the 80s, and with some great touches that recall his best 70s work! The album title might fool you into thinking that Bobby's working in Charlier Parker territory here – but he's not, and is instead grooving in a mellow and soulful west coast mode – working with a totally great group that includes Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano sax, Buddy Montgomery on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The whole album's a magical picture of tone, color, and light – but the especially standout track is "Sierra" – a totally killer number that has these arch angles and edges that rival the best sounds heard on Hutcherson's Montara album! Other titles include "On The Delta", "Crusisin The Bird", "Imminent Treasures", and "All Or Nothing At All". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jazz CrusadersStretchin' Out ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Jazz Crusaders at their early best – swinging hard, and virtually defining the sound of soul jazz on the west coast scene of the 60s! The sound here is impeccable – tight rhythms overlaid with searing solos – all the best the young group had to offer, thanks to the early genius of Wayne Henderson on trombone, Wilton Felder on tenor and alto, Joe Sample on piano, and Stix Hooper on drums. The set also features a bit of guitar from Joe Pass, and bass from Monk Montgomery – who brings in a nice bottom to the rhythms – furthering the groove that really keeps things going! The set list is a mix of originals and tracks by other jazz artists, and includes "Long John", "Out Back", "Bachafillen", "Sweetwater", and "You Are Only Sometimes Rain". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue and silver label pressing. Cover has discoloration from age and light wear.)

✨✧ Harold LandWestward Bound ... CD
Reel To Reel, Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic addition to the too-small catalog of work from the wonderful Harold Land – the west coast tenorist whose sound was maybe more of a bridge to the New York scene in the 50s and 60s – as you'll hear in this collection of well-recorded and unreleased material from his key years on the scene! All the cuts were recorded in Seattle, not LA – and Land is in top formation throughout – working in a few different groups with excellent players – including the mighty trumpeter Carmell Jones on two of the album's tracks, maybe worth the price of the record alone – plus Hampton Hawes and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Monk Montgomery on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Titles include "Triplin The Groove", "Vendetta", "Beepdurple", "Beauty", "Blue N Boogie", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Happily Dancing/Deep Harmonies Falling". CD

✨✧ Riverside Reunion BandMostly Monk – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... CD
Milestone, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tribute to Thelonious Monk, but one that's done with a real soul jazz swing – thanks to a lineup of players from the late 50s/early 60s glory days of the Riverside Records label! The core group could take just about any sort of music and make it great – but they sound especially nice here working with the modern compositions of Monk – swinging them in the same sort of angular, soulful way that Eddie Davis and Johnn Griffin did on some of their famous records from years back – but even more fleshed out instrumentally, too. Players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Jimmy Heath on tenor, Buddy Montgomery on vibes, Barry Harris on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Titles include "Bemsha Swing", "Four On Six", "Work Song", "Gemini", "Well You Needn't", "Round Midnight", and "West Coast Blues". CD
(Punch through barcode, promo stamp on disc.)

✨✧ VariousBlack California Vol 2 ... LP
Savoy, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great compilation – despite the title – one that features west coast recordings made by Savoy, showing the less "cool jazz" side of the LA scene in the late 40s and early 50s! There's some excellent material on here not available elsewhere – especially some great bop groovers in the Central Ave kind of mode. The album's got 4 tracks by Slim Gaillard – "The Jam Man", "Slim's Riff", "I'm Confessin'" and "Oxydol Highball" plus "Blow Blow Blow" by the Wardell Gray All-Stars, 3 takes each of "Blues A La Russ" and "Wake Up Old Maid" by Russell Jacquet, 'What Is This Thing Called Love" by Wild Bill Moore and Gene Montgomery, "Strollin'", "Sonor", "Blues Mood", "Skoot" and "I've Lost Your Love" by a KennY Clarke Sextet that features Milty Jackson and Gerald Wiggins and 4 numbers from Helen Humes. LP, Vinyl record album
