Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! Tripped, echoey atmospherics that's cast as a soundtrack to movie that doesn't exist, the music is forward thinking, boundary busting dubby grooves exists out of time and sounds great to this day. On Psychotic Jonkanoo, Crucial Tony is back in the mix for this righteous early 80s album from Creation Rebel – a set that has Adrian Sherwood only furthering his production genius as he layers together stunning instrumental work from the group! The presence of the vocals has the instrumentation slightly back in the mix – but there's still a great run of rhythms throughout, all driven by the mighty heady basslines of Lizard Logan! From 2023, Hostile Environment is the first album in many years from this legendary studio project from On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood – and one that makes us feel as if the passage of decades hasn't happened at all! Sherwood's production is still wonderful – and, if anything, maybe less showy, or more soulful, or less moody – just something that seems to let the work of the group come through with energy that's wonderfully warm and organic, while still resonating with plenty of touches that will make longtime label fans proud! One of the most enduring albums on the Prelude label, and a great bit of modern soul by James "D-Train" Williams. Hubert Eaves produced the album, and he added lots of tasty electro keyboards to the set, played with his usual jazzy touches and a nice flourish that gives Williams' voice a strong kick on the best cuts. Sparklingly sophisticated – and proof that the indie labels could still churn out quality soul as well as they could disco! An insanely fantastic book on one of our favorite record labels of all time – the All Platinum family of labels from the New Jersey scene of the late 60s/early 70s – a precursor to the later Sugar Hill hip hop empire, and home to The Moments, Whatnauts, and countless other great groups! The book is way more than just the story of the label – as it's super-heavy, weighs as much as a stack of records – and features hundreds of pages with full color images, both of rare records and artists who recorded for All-Platinum too – all in support of chapters that approach the label and its related imprints in a range of different ways. The book not only looks at the big stars, but tackles the lesser-known acts too – and traces all the many sub-labels like Stang, Vibration, A1, Turbo, and Astroscope – then looks at the company's relationship to Chess Records too. The book features an illustrated discography of all the related labels after the main content – with color images of labels and covers – and the whole thing is 532 heavy, glossy pages – well worth the price! A fantastic testament to the far-reaching genius of the young Richie Havens – a double-length set that makes full use of its expanded space to really offer up so many different slices of Havens special sort of magic on the late 60s scene! There's a mixture of live and studio tracks on the set, and gentler numbers mixed with more expansive modes – served up with a host of varied guest performers who really keep things interesting. The lineup includes Colin Walcott on sitar, Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Weldon Myrick on steel guitar, and Jeremy Steig on flute – all hip cats on their own, really expanding the vibe of this record in a wonderful way. One of the few funky late Chess gems for Etta James – recorded during the period when the company was owned by the All Platinum family of labels in New Jersey – with incredible vocals by Etta! Most of the record was cut in NJ, and features Etta's bluesy style meeting some nice funky arrangements by Mike Terry – plus a couple of tracks cut in Hollywood that fit right in stylistically. One of those is the strong opener "Woman (Shake Your Booty)" – with production credited to Etta – and other tracks include "Groove Me", "A Love Vibration","Only A Fool", "Jump Into Love", "Ain't No Pity In the Naked City" and a great version of Randy Newman's "Leave Your Hat On". This first ever CD version from Kent UK has 10 bonus tracks – featuring even more overlooked Chess recordings from the early-to-mid 70s – including a cover of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "Down So Low", "Feeling Uneasy", Power Play", "Let's Burn Down The Cornfield", "Lovin' Arms" and more. A deeply soulful set from saxophonist Fredrik Kronkvist – a player we hardly know at all, but who steps out here with a bold strong session as a leader! You may have heard Fredrik's work with A Bossa Eletrica , but here he's in a straight jazz mode – blowing alto sax in quartet formation, and working with a depth and fluid sense of imagination that takes us back to some of Wayne Shorter's best early work, even though Shorter worked on tenor and Fred's here on alto! Almost all the tracks are originals, and flow wonderfully throughout the set – almost hitting a club jazz mode in their energy and sense of rhythm, but opening up more strongly in a creative soulbop way. The rest of the group includes Daniel Tilling on piano, Martin Sjostedt on bass, and Daniel Frederiksson on drums – and a few tracks feature some additional percussion as well. Includes the tunes "Improvised Action", "Supreme Resolution", "Triplet Soul Mob", "Rootsy Vibration", "Kickin Jazz", and "Two Step Takedown" – plus a great version of "Love Theme From Spartacus". CD

Later work from Love, and more of an Arthur Lee record than a true group effort – but still pretty nice! There's a hard rocking sound on most of the cuts – very fierce guitars, but also done with a nicely rhythmic approach that has less noodly bits than other groups of the time, and which even comes across as fairly soulful on a few tracks, too! A lot of the soul comes through in Arthur's vocals, which are wonderful, and the album is well worth a discovery. Very underappreciated, which is understandable given the grandure of Arthur Lee's earlier ouvre – but very a worthwhile record the bests most psyche era rock records! Jimi Hendrix played on one number, "The Everlasting First" and other titles include "Feel Daddy Feel Good", "Ride That Vibration", "Love Is Coming", "Slick Dick", "Stand Out", "Keep On Shining", and "Gimi A Little Break". A set that's filled with fantastic work from guitarist Fazal Prendergast – working here in a laidback setting with lean backing from the High Times Players, a group that features some sweet keyboard work from Augustus Pablo! The tunes were recorded at Channel One and Aquarius, and mixed at King Tubby's by Scientist – and the proceedings are mostly instrumental, and mix roots reggae rhythms with plenty of dub touches in the studio – all of which are a perfect showcase for the edgey and trippy solo work of Fazal! Prince Far I was taken from the planet in the early 80s – too soon to see the success of his work with Adrian Sherwood and the label – and this set stands as another tribute to their brief moment of genius, with cuts that include "91 Vibration", "Autobiography", "Calling Over The Distant Sea", "Nuclear Weapon", "Dreadlock Soldier", "Prodigal Son", "In I Father's House", "Quante Jubila", and "Beware The Flying Predator". Matthew Shipp in a solo mode – not a new format for him, but somehow one that seems to come alive with all this new sort of energy on record – maybe in part because in recent years, it really feels like Shipp has opened up a whole new world of color and imagination in his music! There's something really special taking place here – both in the timing of the notes, and the way they interact with each other – tonal beauty that we're not sure we ever heard this strongly in Shipp's earliest years, even though there's still a great deal of depth and darkness as well! This is definitely the kind of record that makes us fall in love with Matthew Shipp all over again – and titles include "That Vibration", "Jazz Emotions", "The Essence", "Crystal Structures", "Tune Into It", "Bulldozer Poetics", and "Essence Of Silence". One of the grooviest records ever – a sublime blend of African percussion, soulful orchestrations, and Dorothy Ashby's amazing electric harp! By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. The album includes two great originals – "Soul Vibrations" and "Afro-Harping" – both of which have a nice funky edge, and a groovy soulful bounce – and other tunes include "Lonely Girl", "Life Has Its Trials", "Look Of Love", "Come Live With Me", and a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". A great compilation of tracks by Roy Ayers – one that feels quite different than some of his other collections, as it goes past the hits to show a warm and uniquely mellow side of his career! The 18 track package is drawn from some of his best work on Polydor during the 70s – and instead of uptempo club tracks, or Roy's few famous hits, it goes for laidback numbers that offer a strong focus on his mellow vibes and wonderful production styles. The set grooves along with some of our favorite lesser-known tracks by Roy – occasionally stepping into a hit, but mostly sticking to obscurer album cuts, and a few favorites that have grown in fame over the years, thanks to the sample crowd. This album features a few tracks from that gem, but in longer versions – mixed with other cuts that were never issued in the US at the time – all with that return to perfection that Roy found on Uno Melodic – which was his own label, and one of the few times in the 80s when he matched the brilliance of his 70s recordings on Polydor! Like those albums, the style here is tight and right in the pocket, but also full of meaning and message too – beautiful songs that are catchy, but far from commercial – funky, but never dance music in a conventional way. The set kicks off with a 7:20 minute version of "Chicago" – one of our favorite Roy Ayers songs ever, natch – and other cuts include "Smiling With Our Eyes", "Good Good Music", "Keep On Movin", "Silver Vibrations", "DC City", and "Lots Of Love". One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Four fantastic albums from Bobby Bland – all brought together in a single package for the first time! First up is Come Fly With Me – great work from Bobby Blue Bland – one of the few artists to rise up at the end of the 50s, and still find a way to chart their own path forward in soul with fresh material like this! Bobby's voice is still incredible here, and he works with production from Al Bell and Monk Higgins, the latter of whom arranged – in this cool style that's a bit like some of the territory that Tyrone Davis was taking on at Columbia Records during the second half of the 70s – fuller arrangements that bring some sophisticated soul touches to the music, but in ways that never lose the core of Bobby's genius! Titles include "Lady Lonely", "Night Games", "You Can Count On Me", "Love To See You Smile", "Come Fly With Me", and "To Be Friends". The next album is I Feel Good I Feel Fine – and Bobby Bland sounds pretty good too – thanks to arrangements from the great Monk Higgins, who does a perfect job of mixing Bland's trademark vocals with some sweet late 70s arrangements! The sound is upbeat, but never in a cliched disco mode – more in the territory that you'd hear Johnnie Taylor using over at Columbia Records – maybe a good comparison, given the Memphis roots that both artists shared – as both also evolved a lot to shift their sound with the changing modes of the time. And as with Johnnie, Bobby never loses the core that makes him great – as you'll hear on titles that include "Tit For Tat", "Soon As The Weather Breaks", "In His Eyes", "Someone To Belong To", "I Feel Good I Feel Fine", and "Little Mama". Sweet Vibrations is a real gem from the start of the 80s – arranged by Monk Higgins, who co-produced the set with Al Bell – a duo who'd already given Bobby some great records before, but who really knock it out of the park with this one. There's an extra-special quality going on here – maybe a slight reintroduction of blues roots, but still with a very contemporary spirit – set up to superb backings throughout. Titles include "Soul With A Flavor", "Hollywood Woman", "You'd Be A Millionaire", "Sweet Vibrator", "Special Kind Of Fool", and "A Real Woman Is What It Takes". Try Me I'm Real is record with a title that certainly fits the bill – as the amazing voice of Bobby Bland is as real here as it ever was, and blended with superbly soulful backings that take the singer's sound forward for a whole new generation! Some of Bobby's contemporaries were content to just stick in a straight blues mode – but Bland really grew and developed a lot as an artist, thanks in part to Monk Higgins and Al Bell – who are both at the production helm of the record, and balance the bluesy roots of Bobby with some richer soul backings that really knock the whole thing out of the park!
