✨✧ Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness ... LP
Impulse, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings ... CD
International Anthem, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 13.99
Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The whole thing is fantastic – and titles include "The Count Off", "Brighter Days Beginning", "Universal Beings", "Mantra", "Young Genius", "Holy Lands", "Wise Man Wiser Woman", "Prosperity's Fear", "Atlantic Black", "Flipped Out", "Voila", and "Suite Hans". PreachermanUniversal Philosophy – Preacherman Plays TJ Hustler's Greatest Hits ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Wild work from one of the more compelling artists of the Cali soul scene – an Oakland singer/keyboardist who issued a rare album under the name of TJ Hustler in 1979, then kept on making his own sounds away from the mainstream! The vibe here is very very 80s underground – lots of Casio-styled keyboards, used with spare drum programs – and topped with lyrics that are quite far from any mainstream understanding of soul – clearly marking Preacherman as his own sort of singer right from the start. The collection is a perfect fit for the Luaka Bop style of finding truly unique artists and giving them the spotlight they deserve – and titles include "Feel It", "Out Of This World", "Tell Me Why", "That's Good", "Age Of Individualism", and the 18 minute long "Up & Down". CD also features the 15 minute "The Wrong Way". CD

Universal FunkOne ... CD
April (Denmark), 2003. Used ... $5.99
Beautifully jazzy work from Universal Funk – a real cut above the usual album of this sort! The group's got a great talent for mellow keyboard lines – using wicked electric piano licks to set the stage for the tunes' warm tones and naturally jazzy progressions. The album features some great live work on guitar, trumpet, and percussion – and a few cuts feature vocals by Lena Sandberg, a wonderful singer with a style that adds in a nice degree of soul to the set! Really great stuff – and right up there with our favorite European work of the past 5 years! Titles include "Smokin Love", "Could I", "Step Off", "Don't Take All", "Rain", "Trains & Planes", and "Kuta". CD

Universal Robot BandDance & Shake Your Tambourine (Unidisc pressing) (with bonus track) ... CD
Red Greg/Unidisc, 1977. Used ... $6.99
Excellent work by the Universal Robot Band – an electronic ensemble put together by producer Greg Carmichael, and featuring that great funky moog sound that he and Patrick Adams were using heavily at the time! The tracks have a funky disco groove – similar to groups on P&P Records, but a bit more conventionally disco at points too – with elements that might have made these guys cross over to a slightly bigger audience in the 70s. The moog is plenty great throughout – going really wild a times, with that unbridled quality that really marks a P&P recording – and the beats often that that slightly funk, sweetly stepping Adams/Carmichael groove too! With all that great keyboard work, there's hardly a tambourine in sight – and titles include "Dance & Shake Your Tambourine", "You're My Music", "Space Disco", "Save Me", and "Sunshine". CD also features a radio mix of "Dance & Shake Your Tambourine". CD

Universal Togetherness BandUniversal Togetherness Band ... CD
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A Chicago group who never hit the big time during their short run at the start of the 80s – but one who definitely know how to groove! There's a vibe here that really lives up to the "togetherness" in the group's name – a way of coming together with a tight, sharp sound throughout – but one that's never too slick, just surprisingly strong for such an underground funk group from the Windy City! And although the music is upbeat, the style is less disco than it is the kind of faster funk that percolated strongly in the underground scene in the pre-house years – almost more akin to some of the best indie club work coming out of the east coast, but with a very unique vibe too. As usual with Numero, the set does way more than just bring this lost music to light – it also tells the tale of the Universal Togetherness Band, and their never-flagging sense of energy and inspiration during their short but important run. Titles include "Ain't Gonna Cry", "Try Try Try", "My Sentiment", "Real Thrill", "Once In A Lifetime", "Call For Love", "I Want You", and "Taken By Love". CD

A fantastic 500th release by the BBE label – one that looks back at the past, and soars to the future! This special extended single package is a fantastic return to form for everyone involved – as underground club legends Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess get a whole new groove from Louie Vega – but with a warmly soaring vibe that's a great update of their classic approach! "Barely Breaking Even" is a classic from the Universal Robot Band – but this new take has both vocals and production that are a lot warmer than the original P&P Records version – and a groove that's even catchier too! All four mixes are over eight minutes long – served up here beautifully on a double 12" package! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Woods EmpireUniversal Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
80s grooving from Woods Empire – a short-lived group, but one with a great talent for balancing catchy lyrics and tight grooves with a slightly hipper sensibility! The group's a quintet with Tommy Woods in the lead, supported by his four sisters on vocals – almost a family-style approach, like Debarge, but groovier overall. The backing's very much in the Tabu/Solar mold, with nice jazzy touches from the session players like David T Walker, Paul Jackson Jr, Paulinho da Costa and Don Myrick. We're particularly fond of the smooth jazzed out "Universal Love", with a midtempo stepper's feel, and the set also includes "Sweet Delight", "In Your Ear With It", "Misty Eyes", "Destiny", "In The Night Air", "The Boogie's Gonna Get You", and "So Hot". 4 bonus tracks on this great CD version: ""The Boogie's Gonna Get You (extended version)", "The Boogie's Gonna Get You (edit)", "Sweet Delight (extended version)", "Come On Give Me Love" and "Love Makes The World Go Round". ✨✧ India ArieTestimony Vol 2 – Love & Politics ... CD
Soulbird/Universal, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Chapter two, and an even deeper set than India Arie's first Testimony album – a record that shows a lot of growth in India's music, and a style that's even more mature and righteous than before! Arie's acoustic guitar is a key part of the instrumentation, and the album features a fair bit of mellower tracks too – so that there's a sense of intimacy in the music that's really great – the perfect setting for India's positive thinking and spiritual growth, which is documented somewhat in her copious notes inside the album's booklet! Most tunes have a warm glow, but one that's never smooth or commercial – and guests on the album include Musiq Soulchild, Gramps Morgan, Dobet Gnahore, and Terrell Carter. Titles include "Long Goodbye", "Chocolate High", "Ghetto", "Therapy", "River Rise", "Pearls", "Better Way", "Yellow", and "He Heals Me". CD

✨✧ Dorothy AshbyRubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Cadet/Universal (Japan), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". Albert AylerAlbert Ayler In Greenwich Village ... CD
Impulse/Universal (Japan), 1966/1967. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching On". CD

Universal, 2000. Used ... $3.99
A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a set that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". ✨✧ Banda Black RioO Som Das Americas ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Contemporary work from Banda Black Rio – the legendary Brazilian funk band who gave us some really great records in the 70s! Turns out, the group still sounds great after all the passage of years – more in a modern soul mode overall, with a few more sophisticated twists and turns alongside the grooves – and a wider style overall, to make room for guests who include Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and others! Think of the music as a progression from earlier Brazilian soul modes – a bit in the way that early Ed Motta work was a step forward from the generation of Tim Maia – and amidst the great guest vocal work, there's also plenty of sharp instrumentation. Titles include "Arthur E O Gigante", "America Do Sul", "Labirintos", "Rir E Chorar", "Isabela", "Aos Pes Do Redentor", "Vento Leva", "Aguas Sabias", "Bossa Da Praia", and "Nove No Samba". CD

The Beasties' peak-era, retro-style instrumentals LP! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm commitment to funky instrumental backing – their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves – but they often seemed to get buried amidst all the bugged out vocals. The record kind of has the vibe of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in, and all the better thanks to Money Mark, pretty much a 4th Beastie here! A cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel. Every track's a winner, and the titles include "Ricky's Theme", "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Transitions", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". LP, Vinyl record album

Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Booker T & PriscillaHome Grown (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1972. Used ... $19.99
Much mellower than the previous duet effort from Booker T & Priscilla Jones – a set that almost echoes Book's Memphis roots, but in ways that are different than the familiar soul of Stax! There's lots of sweet organ lines in the instrumentation – but they're played with a style that's often a bit rougher, almost more gospel-influenced than we're used to hearing from Booker – a beautiful mix for the spare vocal approach used on most of the record – a definite "home grown" sound that has Book and Priscilla singing in an intimate way that's really great. If you've ever doubted Booker's departure from The MGs, this record's well worth checking out – as he's definitely moved into a hip new space of his own – one that has some extremely haunting qualities at times. A&M/Universal (Japan), 1973. Used ... $19.99
Booker T's definitely into a great new groove here – one that really extrapolates his Memphis roots through the haze of early 70s California – coming up with some wonderful sounds along the way! There's a definite A&M vibe to the record – that mix of rootsy modes and hipster polish that A&M was really pioneering alongside the Warner camp – and most of the instrumentation here is pretty stripped-down and laid back – sometimes played all by Booker in overdubs, sometimes with added studio help. Organ lines figure strongly, but not always – and vocals are mostly duets between Booker and Priscilla – on titles that include "Rings Around The World", "When Two People Are In Love", "The Crippled Crow", "Time", "Wild Fox", "Fly", and "Mendocino". CD

Universal (France), 1963/1966. New Copy 2CD & 2DVD ... $24.99
Two vintage performances by one of the greatest French language singers of all time – presented here both on CD, and on DVD – the latter of which features filmed performances that are simply amazing! Brel was one of the sharpest, smartest songwriters of his generation – hailed by a host of others, including Scott Walker and Marc Almond – but his sense of performance is a completely other side of his amazing talents – very expressive, almost acting – but never in a way that's overdone, or which gets in the way of the sharpness of his tunes! Instead, Brel on stage is a perfect visual accompaniment to that shift he brought to the world of chanson – a way of being committed, but also distant – close enough to feel pain, but with a proper perspective – that amazing balance that still makes his songs so relevant after all these years. The package features a full live performance from 1963, recorded in Knokke Le Zout, and another from 1966, recorded at the Olympia, in Paris – plus a bonus interview from 1971 – all on both CD and DVD. Bob Brookmeyer & Bill EvansIvory Hunters – Double Barrelled Piano ... CD
United Artists/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used ... $11.99
A compelling album of twin-piano lines – one in which Bill Evans and Bob Brookmeyer play head-to-head, in a spiraling modernist style that brings out the best in each player! Although Brookmeyer's best known as a trombonist, he's pretty great here on piano – and the album's a real treasure from his legendary late 50s years – a time when Bob was really opening up tremendously in his music! The album separates out the players via stereo – with Bill Evans in the right channel and Brookmeyer in the left – and the format usually has one player in a rhythm groove while the other solos over the top. The bass of Percy Heath and drums of Connie Kay complete the group – and titles include longish versions of "As Time Goes By", "I Got Rhythm", "The Man I Love", and "The Way You Look Tonight". CD

James BrownGet On Up – The James Brown Story ... CD
Polydor/Universal, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. Used ... $6.99
A set put together as the soundtrack for the James Brown bio-pic – but one that features mostly original recordings by The Godfather himself, and a few older cuts altered a bit for the film! The groove runs from early 60s soul to early 70s funk – and there's a fair bit of live tracks, which go well to display James at his vibrant concert best. About a quarter of the material seems to be vintage recordings, augmented with some new performances or vocals to fit the scenes in the film – but these fit well alongside the classics, to a point where there's hardly much discernable difference (as well as little in the notes to explain them as well.) Tracks include "Sex Machine", "Mother Popcorn (part 1)", "It's A Man's Man's Man's World (live)", "I Got The Feelin (live)", "Soul Power (live)", "Try Me (live)", "Please Please Please", "Get Up Offa That Thing", "I Can't Stand Myself (live)", and "I Got You". James Brown, proud and loud – a smoking 60s album that provides a great link between his earlier styles and his freer roots – with a brilliant blend of funk, soul, and a touch of raw R&B! Given the power of The Godfather at this point, there's no denying that even the older cuts have a punch that few others could match – making for a record that feels mighty darn unified, despite the stretch of time between a few of the recordings. Titles include the funky gems "Ain't That a Groove (pts 1 & 2)", "The Scratch", "Is It Yes or Is It No", and James' great version of "The Bells" that's always been one of our favorites – plus Just You & Me", "I Love You Yes I Do", "Come Over Here", and "I Don't Mind". Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling energy here that's totally great – dynamic, powerful calls from James at the top of most tunes – and incredibly sharp work on horns and rhythm from the band – cutting grooves and turning lines like no other combo in the business, all with a great mix of deep soul and hard funk! The album features the 7 minute killer version of "Let a Man Come In & Do The Popcorn", plus "World (parts 1 & 2)", "It's A New Day (parts 1 & 2)", "Give It Up or Turn It Loose", "If I Ruled The World", "The Man In The Glass (part 1)", and "I'm Not Demanding (part 1)". Quite possibly the best of the solo albums by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce – recorded immediately after the breakup of the band, with a great jazz-based lineup that includes John McLaughlin on guitar, Dick Heckstall-Smith on reeds, and Jon Hiseman on drums. The set's totally instrumental – and the choppy reed work of Heckstall-Smith is the strongest asset of the album, as he virtually sets the tone for a whole generation of European funky honkers to come for the next 10 years. Bruce's bass work is great too – and really pushes the album into some great moments, a few of which actually get a bit funky! Polydor/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used 2CDs ... $29.99
A fantastic early solo project from guitarist Roy Buchanan – recorded for Polydor at the start of the 70s, but never issued at the time! We're not sure why the label slept on the set, as it's a searing little killer right from the start – done in a gritty mode that's far hipper than some of the other blues rock of the period – never that cliched, with some swampy elements, a few funky touches, and a strong hint of the farther-reaching modes that Buchanan would hit in later years. Roy sings, as does a young Charlie Daniels, who plays second guitar and also wrote many of the tracks – and the set also features some vocals from Joe DiGregorio, and keyboards from Bob Wilson. Titles include "Humbug Down On The River", "Billy Joe Young", "The Story Of Isaac", "Black Autumn", "Funky Junky", "There'll Always Be", "I Desire You", and "Pain". 2CD set also features a March 1971 session, and bonus tracks too – with titles that include "Roy's Bluz", "Shotgun", "Dual Soliloquy", "CC Rider (live)", "Down By The River (live)", "After Hours/The Messiah Will Come Again", and "Sweet Dreams". Decca/Universal (Japan), Mid 50s. Used ... $24.99
Fantastic work from one of our favorite jazz arrangers ever! As proven by some of his impeccable work crafting larger backings for artists on the Verve and Clef labels, Ralph Burns had an approach that was quite different than most of his contemporaries. He worked in a mode that seemed pretty standard at the outset – with an approach to backdrops that worked in broad colors of sound and tone – but he also had a talent for putting in strange modern twists, little surprises, and other embellishments that never detracted from the soloist, and instead seemed to keep them on their toes, forcing them to really come up with some great stuff during their time at the recording. You'll hear plenty of that kind of action going on here – in one of Burns' rarest sets ever, recorded with a group that includes Billy Byers, Joe Newman, Dave Schildkraut, Herbie Mann, and Milt Hinton. Mann's particularly great, and plays a number of horns with ease – and titles include "Cool Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "What Am I Here For", "I'll Be Around", "Jazz Club USA", and "South Gonzales Street Parade. A really sweet little album from guitarist Kenny Burrell – one in which he takes older tunes ("a generation ago"), and updates them with a sweetly compressed Verve 60s groove ("today"!) The record features 2 small groups – one with Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and Phil Woods on some mighty nice alto sax – and another with Carter, Tate, and the great Richard Wyands on piano. The style is light, laidback, and recorded with a warm tone overall – in a mode that's almost a precursor to the CTI sound of the late 60s. Mike Maineri joins on vibes on one track – and titles include "Wholly Cats", "Rose Room", "As Long As I Live", and "A Smooth One" CD

One of the seminal sides cut by Donald Byrd in his partnership with Pepper Adams – a high-up, low-down set that's a smoker all the way through! The approach of the record is tightly soulful, with loads of great changes – and some surprising dark edges that really add in a whole new dimension to the Donald Byrd sound of the time. A record with a bit of a gag in the title, but a set that has the mighty Caravan at their classic best – simply soaring to the skies on some of the best-crafted prog lines of their generation! The lineup has shifted a bit from before – only core members Pye Hastings on guitar and Richard Coughan on drums – but the sound is still wonderful, as Dave Sinclair steps on with lots of cool work on keyboards – and the group get assorted guest help from Brit jazz giants who include Tony Coe on tenor, Pete King on flute and alto, Henry Lowther on trumpet, Frank Rocotti on congas, and Rubert Hine on Arp! Peter Geoffrey Richardson is also a core member of the group, and provides electric viola at many spots – an instrument which doesn't change the Caravan sound, so much as slide right in and expand it. Maybe the greatest moment ever from Caravan – one of the greatest groups to emerge from the jazzy Canterbury scene in the late 60s! The album's a wonderful blend of jazz roots and more focused rock impulses – and has some subtle funky elements that's given it a wider sort of audience over the years – that special sound you'd find in a rare few Deram gems by artists like Mike Westbrook or Colosseum too. The drums are especially great – snapping out in a way that really holds things together, even when the instrumental solos really step out strongly – especially the organ, flute, and tenor – all of which retain a jazzy appeal. The vocals from Richard Sinclair are nice, too – never overdone, with almost a Robert Wyatt sort of reserve – and titles include "Golf Girl", "Love To Love You", "In The Land Of Grey & Pink", and the extended "Nine Feet Underground", which takes up all of side two. Bill ColemanJazz In Paris – From Boogie To Funk ... CD
Universal (France), 1960. Used ... $11.99
Trumpeter Bill Coleman was one of many American players that made their home in Paris during the postwar years – and like many of his contemporaries on the scene, he cut some of his finest work in the city's rich sympathetic scene. This album's probably Coleman's finest – and it has a moody laidback sound that reminds us of the best albums on the Prestige Swingville label from the early 60s. No surprise that Coleman's got some strong backing by some of the Prestige crowd – including US jazz talents like Budd Johnson on tenor, Patti Brown on piano, Les Spann on guitar, and Quentin Jackson on trombone. The style of the set is a mixture of swing and hardbop – but the open-endedness of some of the tracks goes way past any easy marks that you might put on the music, pushing it into the full range of styles promised by the title. A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". The album's got the group dropping the "jazz" from their name, but it's still a great bit of LA funky soul jazz – with electric keyboards from Joe Sample that are very much in a late 60s mode, plus guitar from David T Walker and Arthur Adams, and bass from Chuck Rainey, in addition to fine work by regulars like Stix Hooper, Wayne Henderson, and Wilton Felder. One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a groundbreaking soundtrack that forever changed the way that jazz music was used in film! According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". Some of the coolest soundtrack music you'll ever hope to hear – all played by a cat who could equally handle the sitar, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and electronics pictured on the cover! Francois De Roubaix is easily one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever – a French talent at the end of the 60s who never got the same international exposure as some of his countrymen, but who had an ear for odd instrumentation and funky undercurrents that rivals that of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier, or Jean-Claude Vannier – although we might even be tempted to say that Francois is even more way-out than any of them! Blue Note/Universal (Japan), 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever by Kenny Dorham – and a really different session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual – blowing with a tone that's much more open and a bit less poised – in the company of a really great group that features JR Monterose on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums. The album features a really wonderful take on Dorham's boppish "Mexico City", plus other enigmatic compositions like "Monaco" and "Hill's Edge" – and versions of "Round Midnight" and "Autumn In New York". CD release adds "K.D.'s Blues", "Royal Roost", "Who Cares", and "My Heart Stood Still". CD

The soundtracks to 2 of Jean Luc-Godard's greatest films – back to back on one CD! The score to Pierrot Le Feu features 9 tracks in all – 3 of which are vocal numbers by Anna Karina, who starred in the film, and who delivers the vocals with a decadently deadpan style that fits perfectly with the songs. New work from Sidsel Endresen – one of the compelling Norewegian artists currently part of the Jazzland underground future of electronic jazz! Sidsel's one of the few singers to emerge from the scene – and he's got a spare breathy voice that's halfway between Bjork and Jay Jay Johansson – singing in English, but slightly off-kilter because of his accent, and the way the vocals are layered amidst moody electronics and soundscapey backdrops. Music on the album is created with help from Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Petter Molvaer, and Roger Ludvigsen – and titles include "Angel", "Undertow", "You Cover Time", "Travelling Still", and "Blessed Instant". Opal/Universal, Mid 80s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of spare sounds created by Brian Eno for a variety of different art installations over the decades – music used for different spaces between 1986 to 2017, all of which become, in a way, a kind of work in practice for some of the ideas that Eno first explored with his Ambient records series in the 70s! The most legendary of those, Music For Airports, first expressed the idea of creating a new sonic space in certain well-traveled public areas – and while the art installations here weren't always that public as an airport, they really did give Eno a great chance to explore the balance of sound and space. The box set features 6CDs, and a 64 page booklet with images and artwork, plus a new essay by Eno – to accompany works that include Music From Installations, 77 Million Paintings, I Dormienti, Kite Stories, Lightness, Making Space, and Music For Future Installations. Great soundtrack work from Brian Eno – a record that's maybe more stark than some of his other work of the past few decades – but in a way that's no surprise, given that the music is for a film about the brilliant minimalist designer Dieter Rams! There are sounds here that recall some of Eno's late 70s collaborations with Cluster, while others have more of the organic, acoustic qualities of his own ambient work – and the pairing of two thoughtful geniuses for one project is a perfect match. The third album from Eric B & Rakim – absolute classic MC/DJ duo hip hop and maybe their most solid from beginning end, as impossible as that should've been after high bars they set with Paid In Full & Follow The Leader! By this point, Rakim was firmly established as one of hip hop's greatest rhymers, but he still steps to a higher level here, with a more forceful approach on some grittier material and his trademark cool and measured flow on others. "Let The Rhythm Hit Em" and "In The Ghetto" strong enough to call this a classic on their majesty alone, but this one's got one should-be standout track after another including "Mahogany", "No Omega", "Keep Em Eager To Listen", "Step Back", "Run For Cover" and more. We've loved the music of Shaun Escoffery for many years now – right from that time when he emerged from the UK scene as key talent in the Omar generation – the kind of strong songwriting voice and confident singer that really helped mark a difference from the world of soul in the US! Escoffery has evolved wonderfully over the course of his superb recordings – and here, he continues to grow even more – coming on strong, and maybe with more of a 60s soul inspiration than ever before – kind of a romping, vibrant approach to the music that echoes the Motown generation, while still also sounding immediately contemporary, and graced with a production style that maybe makes Shaun's vocals sound even more powerful than ever! We've been waiting decades for Escoffery to get the international fame he deserves – and maybe this record is the one that will put him over the top, given the strength of the songs and the overall set as a whole. Virgin/Universal (UK), 1986. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A great snapshot of jazzy London in the years before the acid jazz explosion of the late 80s – and a surprisingly great soundtrack that's stood the test of time much more than the actual film! The music here represents a jazz-based undercurrent of the London scene that was already turning its ears back in time – to a pre-mod era of the late 50s, which is the setting for Colin MacInnes original novel used for the film – portrayed here in a pastiche of vocal and instrumental songs that often have a fair bit of classic touches! Gil Evans was brought in for most of the instrumentals, and turns out some really sparkling charts that have all the charm of his best work of the 50s – and other contemporary artists do a pretty great job themselves – at least on the more jazz-based numbers. Evans numbers include versions of Charles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and "Better Git It In Your Soul", plus his own "Va Va Vaoom" – and the better jazzy tunes includes the excellent "Killer Blow" by Sade, plus "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by The Style Council, "That's Motivation" and "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie, "Rodrigo Bay" by Working Week, "Selling Out" by Slim Gaillard, and "Riot City" by Jerry Dammers. 2LP UK version – with much more instrumental music than the American version! A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet". Motown legends finally get their due – in this first-ever collection of work by The Funk Brothers! The tunes include a few originals, plus instrumental takes on Motown classics – with titles that include "Soul Stomp", "6 By 6", "Too Many Fish In The Sea", "All For You", "Come See About Me", "How Sweet It Is", "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "What's Going On", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and "Runaway Child Running Wild". This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. One of the grooviest collections of work by Serge Gainsbourg we've ever seen – a 23 track set that features most of his coolest numbers! In case you don't know Serge, he's one of the most incredible singers ever – a sexy Frenchman with a good talent for a groove, with a sound that was light-years ahead of most of his contemporaries, and which is continually being re-discovered today. This package goes way past other simple "best of" collections of Serge's work – to compile those tunes that are especially appealing to an era in which his classics have been sampled, re-recorded, and used as inspiration for countless young bands. As such, the tracks, although old, sound incredibly fresh – with a stunning array of gems from the 60s and 70s that include "Chez Les Ye Ye", "Bonnie & Clyde", "Ford Mustang", "Initials BB", "Requiem Pour Un C", "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus", "L'Anamour", "69 Annee Erotique", "La Decadanse", "Ballad De Melody Nelson", "Sous Le Soleil Exactement", "Marilou Sous La Neige", "Sea Sex & Sun", "Aux Armes Et Cetera", "Dieu Fumeur De Havanes", "Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'En Vais", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou", and "Qui Est In Qui Est Out". The coolest collection we've ever seen to focus on the soundtrack work of the great Serge Gainsbourg – and the most complete as well! The package really digs deep – and seems to offer up tracks from just about every single film that Gainsbourg was involved with – from his own compositions, to partnerships with greats like Alain Goraguer, Michel Colombier, and the mighty Jean-Claude Vannier – all of whom come up with very groovy, often funky instrumentation that rivals Serge's own releases! In fact, we might well even say that we find the Gainsbourg soundtrack material to be even cooler – as the films often gave Serge a chance to experiment, and try out new ideas he wouldn't do on his own records. This LP package is a great distillation of the larger CD set, with a focus on the grooviest cuts – and includes selections from the films L'Eau A La Bouche, Manon 70, Anna, Si Jetais Un Espion, Le Pacha, Slogan, Une Vueve En Or, and Les Chemins De Katmandou. One of the greatest French female singers of the 60s – presented here in a classic collection of work! If you've gotta dig one gal vocalist of the Parisian scene of the time, Gall is definitely your girl – as her brash, bold style of singing really sums up the hippest, grooviest French styles of the time! The start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time.
