An amazing run of music – some of the hippest, most creative pop ever recorded – all records that helped forever cement the genius of Todd Rundgren, and all packaged here in one totally great collection! The first five albums here are especially wonderful – the genius debut of Runt, the follow up Runt The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren, the double length pop masterpiece Something/Anything, the weirder A Wizard A True Star, and the double experimental set Todd – followed by records that continue to mix Rundgren's studio experimentation with his amazing ear for a catchy tune – on albums that include Initiation, Faithful, Hermit Of Mink Hollow, Healing, and The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect – as well as the 2LP live set Back To The Bars. 13 CDs, each packaged in a tiny LP-style sleeve – within a larger box set! Ampex, 1970. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Todd Rundgren in all of his great early glory – a record that's filled with simple, honest pop tunes – and one that also takes on a few experimental touches as well – but only in ways that further the earnest charm at its heart! There's a really upfront, unpretentious feel to the record – one that matches Todd's indie rock look on the cover, and which comes through beautifully in the balance of material in the set. Some tunes are a bit harder rocking, but they're always offset by gentler moments that really stand out. Titles include "We Gotta Get You A Woman", "The Last Thing You Said", "Broke Down & Busted", "Who's That Man", "Birthday Carol", "Believe In Me", and the great medley of "Baby Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands". ✨✧ Todd RundgrenSomething/Anything? ... CD
Bearsville/Rhino, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest pop albums of all time – a pure act of genius from Todd Rundgren, and one of the few cases in rock music where two records are actually better than one! The double-length set was Rundgren's third solo effort after the breakup of Nazz – but it's a broad step ahead from the first two, and a strong move into the kind of near-perfect, yet always-human pop that made Rundgren so great in the 70s. Sides one through three of the album were completely done by Todd himself – all instruments, voices, and production handled through the then-new magic of the 16 track studio – and Rundgren's really at his best here, working in the kind of personal modes that make his tunes so great, some of the best of the mainstream singer/songwriter generation. Side four has fuller arrangements and other players coming into the mix, but the core feel of the rest of the record is very nicely preserved – apart from a few tunes that perhaps get a bit too goofy. It's hard to imagine more great pop songs in one album – and the set's overflowing with genius moments that include "Marlene", "I Saw The Light", "I Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", "It Takes Two To Tango", "Sweeter Memories", "I Went To The Mirror", "One More Day", "Song Of The Viking", and "Hello It's Me". CD

✨✧ Todd RundgrenWizard – A True Star ... LP
Bearsville, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the first really tripped-out albums from Todd Rundgren – a record that makes us think he must have been getting a lot into his head since the time in the studio for Something/Anything! While not a concept album, the record does have a clearly stated "quest for knowledge and quest for love" that kind of colors most of the set – a higher concept that's reached for in the album's array of shorter playful tunes, and ever-changing styles of music. As always, we're still most partial to the gentler, more personal numbers on the set – and these stand out as little oasis between numbers that have a more sonically experimental nature. Titles include a few weird little instrumentals with moogy bits – like "Flamingo" and "Tic Tic Tic It Wears Off" – plus vocal numbers that include "Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel", "You Don't Have To Camp Around", "Never Never Land", "International Feel", "Just Another Onionhead", "Does Anybody Love You", "Hungry For Love", and "Is It My Name". ✨✧ Four TopsNature Planned It ... CD
Motown/Elemental (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". Even includes a great version of Todd Rundgren's wonderful track "We Gotta Get You A Woman"! CD

Nils LofgrenNils Lofgren ... LP
A&M, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
The wonderful first solo album from Nils Lofgren – done with this lean, tight sound that's nicely different than his previous work with Grin – and which really lets Nils show off all the best sides of his vocals and guitar! The group is just a core trio with Wornell Jones on bass (later of solo funk fame) and the great Aynsley Dunbar on drums – a player whose compact energy really brings a nice kick to the tunes, without ever overdoing things at all! Nils himself is stunningly charming on vocals – and also handles guitar, piano, and organ – as well as backup vocals, through the magic of overdub. In an era of rock overindulgence, the intimacy of the record is a really welcome change – although Lofrgren manages to come across with a real fullness too – almost like Todd Rundgren's self-created projects. Titles include "Keith Don't Go", "Back It Up", "One More Saturday Night", "Be Good Tonight", "Can't Buy A Break", "Duty", and "The Sun Hasn't Set On This Boy Yet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ NazzNazz 1 ... CD
Rhino, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Genius early pop from Todd Rundgren & Nazz – work that's much more hard-rocking than some of Todd's later hits, but still with an undeniable songwriting brilliance! Tracks are mostly short and simple – based around plenty of lead guitar from Todd, and showcasing the lead vocals of Stewkey – whose slightly spacey style of singing brings in a really different feel to the tunes. Rundgren wrote nearly all the tunes on the set – and some of them have a bit of a psychedelic twist, augmented especially through his own heavy guitar, and the production styles of Bill Traut, who handled most of the set. Titles include a sweet early version of "Hello It's Me", plus "Open My Eyes", "Back Of My Mind", "Wildwood Blues", "When I Get My Plane", "Crowded", and "If That's the Way You Feel". CD

NazzNazz Nazz ... CD
Rhino, 1969. Used ... $16.99
The second full album from Nazz – a set that has Todd Rundgren extending even more dominance over the group through his original songs and arrangements – and, we're willing to guess, a fair bit of production work too – even though that's credited here to the entire band! Rundgren's still not singing lead vocals on most of the tunes, so they've got that slighty more psychedelic feel the group put forth on their debut – but the guitars here have also stepped back a bit, and many of the best tracks have that more fragile, more personal feel that we've always loved in Todd's solo work – even if some of the themes are still a bit varied. Titles include "Hang On Paul", "Rain Rider", "Gonna Cry Today", "Featherbedding Lover", "Kiddie Boy", "Forget All About It", "Not Wrong Long", and "Meridian Leeward". CD

Mercury, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"I need a fix – and a kiiiiiiiiiissssssss!" What can we say? Johnny Thunders, David Johansen and the boys reinvented the wheel with the of wildly hedonist glam skronk spun on this still incredible debut record. Both records they made for Mercury are incredible, but this is the bonafide masterpiece. It's a classic purely on a primal rock 'n' roll level, but it's also one of rock's greatest examples of style equaling substance! The Dolls brought glammer to the gutter and vice versa, and this is no doubt their greatest moment! Includes "Personality Crisis", "Looking For A Kiss", "Trash", "Frankenstein", "Pills", "Bad Girl", "Private World" and "Jet Boy". Produced by Todd Rundgren and engineered by Jack Douglas – the former a legend in his own right, the latter whose name appears on so many great records that range from other proto-punk and punk-era classics (Patti Smith Group, The Runaways) to the trashier side of the mainstream (prime early Cheap Trick, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper). Small WonderSmall Wonder (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
The small wonder here is Henry Small – lead singer for this great overlooked group, who are a quirky major label band that really give things their all! Small's got some inflections that sound a bit like Todd Rundgren, and the record's got that great post-Beatles approach to production that uses all elements in a nicely harmonic, very tuneful way – never too polished, but plenty darn catchy – and certainly the sort of material that might have gotten these guys some big radio play, had someone been going around with the right sort of payola handouts! Yet it's also the obscurity that really gives the set its charms – that almost-familiar, but not really vibe that can make overlooked records like this so great – on titles that include "You & I", "Midnite Plane Ride", "It Was Meant To Be", "Time Is Passing Me By", "I'm A One Way Train", and "Atlantis". The group's fuzz on the guitars is turned up nice – almost like they're trying to give a nod to the new wave generation, while Rundgren ups the catchiness of their tunes, and finds a way to make the whole thing not get bogged down in the larger concept of the record – which is a commentary about television in the modern age. Roy WoodMustard ... LP
United Artists, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99 24.99
A heady, hairy solo album from the great Roy Wood – very different than his material with Wizzard, and definitely a solo set, given that Roy handled everything about the album himself – from all the vocals and instruments, to all the production and arrangements, to all the artwork on the cover! The record's also got this very unusual pastiche of styles, too – each song is very different, almost as if the album's an experiment by Wood, trying out different facets of his musical ability – and combining them into a set that's way more experimental than you'd guess for the time, or for a record on a major label. Some tracks are very tuneful and catchy, but sit next to looser, more openly-shaped work – and the balance is fantastic, a bit like a classic Todd Rundgren record – where you'd have a brilliant radio-ready track right next to a looser bit of sonic creativity. Titles include the Brian Wilson-like "Why Does Such A Pretty Girl Song Those Sad Songs" – plus "Look Thru The Eyes Of A Fool", "Interlude/Get On Down Home", "Mustard", "Any Old Time Will Do", and "The Rain Came Down On Everything".
