Some of Dave Brubeck's best-remembered work – packaged here together in a cool box set of LP-styled sleeves! The set begins with the seminal Time Out album – a huge hit for Brubeck, and his first to experiment with moving around in different time changes – an approach that's followed strongly on the other four albums – Countdown Time In Outer Space, Time Further Out, Time Changes, and Time In – all packaged wonderfully together in a set that might well be called the "time box"! The last-ever live performance of the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond – recorded in 1967, but issued here for the first time ever! The group was the stuff of legend in the 50s and 60s – Dave's incredible approach to piano and time signatures, supported by amazing rhythm progressions from bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello – topped by some completely sublime work on alto sax by the mighty Paul Desmond! Throughout the 60s, the group really expanded their sound wonderfully – through a set of richly exploratory albums for Columbia Records, taking their core approach into a wide range of new styles and formats that really made for some beautiful music. Here, they deliver a stellar swan song – working in a live performance that brings back a few classics, and also shows some of the new territory they'd taken too – all recorded beautifully, at a level that makes the record a perfect pairing with their studio albums for Columbia – almost as if the label had been holding back a gem after all these years. There's been a few other Callier collections on the market, but this one's got the best vibe of all of them – as it really goes out of its way to paint the full picture of Terry's unique music – by weaving together tunes that touch on his strongest moments of genius, and mixing those with some surprising gems that haven't been reissued before! A mighty big party from tenor giant Arnett Cobb – a player who always blew strongly in other settings, but really hit his height on these albums for Prestige! The record is a perfect mix of Cobb's bluesy roots and a more sophisticated modern jazz setting – with support from a crack rhythm combo of Ray Bryant on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plus the special addition of Ray Barretto on congas, who brings in this rolling kick that definitely opens things up to the party atmosphere in the title – even when things are mellow! Most numbers have a open, soulfully blowing feel – and titles include "Slow Poke", "Lonesome Road", "Party Time", and "Blues In the Closet". CD

Brilliant later work from Ornette Coleman – quite adventurous stuff, too! By the late 80s, the shock of the new of Ornette's harmolodic sound had worn off enough that majors like CBS/Portrait were more than willing to invest in it – but for every catchy modern groove here, there's a left turn into more subtly daring territory! A few tracks feature Jerry Garcia – "3 Wishes", "Singing In The Shower", and "Desert Player" – and his jazz-folk-psych improv guitar style is a pretty wild match for Ornette and Prime Time. We didn't give those cuts nearly enough credit to over the years! The Garcia-less tracks show Ornette's awareness of hip hop and funky fusion, but he doesn't cop to trends. It's more that he's showing his continuing relevance in the 80s landscape. The group features Denard Coleman on percussion and keys, Calvin Weston on drums, Al MacDowell and Chris Walker on bass, Bern Nix and Charlee Ellerbe on guitars, and Ornette on alto, trumpet and violin. Sublime trio work from pianist Stanley Cowell – a player who's held us rapt with attention for decades – and continues to earn our faith with great records like this! The album features Cowell on piano, and a bit of kalimba – which is mighty nice – working with bassist Tom DiCarlo and drummer Chris Brown – both younger players who really seem to get Cowell's groove, especially in the more complicated moments – of which there are a few. The set begins with two great originals by Stanley – "Cosmology" and "El Space O" – then moves into the great "Asian Art Suite", which is really one of the most unusual, exotic things we've heard from Cowell in years! That music is then offset by the long "Civil Rights Suite" – which has bolder overtones to match its social message – and the set then concludes with two more standalone compositions by Cowell – "Long Vamp" and the classic "Abstrutions". Previously-unreleased live work by one of Miles Davis' most important groups ever – a Bitches Brew-era lineup, playing live at the Fillmore East a month before the record was released to the public – which makes this performance one of the first times the world had ever heard jams like this! The group's heavy on rhythm here – a rumbling groove brought up from the bottom, courtesy of the drums of Jack Dejohnette, basses of Dave Holland, and percussion of Airto – sewn together beautifully by the Fender Rhodes work of Chick Corea – easily some of the noisiest sounds the instrument ever produced! Amazing work from one of the most inventive trios ever led by pianist Bill Evans – a fantastic group that features the young Eddie Gomez on bass and the mighty Jack DeJohnette on drums! Both players would develop into strong leaders of their own in later years – but here, on this unreleased material from 1968, it's amazing to hear them already shaping sounds with a new sense of freedom – that mixture of complexity and lyricism that Bill brought to his groups from the end of the 50s onwards – delivered here in the hands of musicians who'd both take that spirit, and run with it even more strongly in years to come. Gomez is no stranger to Evans, and had already recorded often with his piano – one of the most sublime pairings of the 60s – but DeJohnette really brings something special to the group – maybe more of a special sonic range at times that allows him to stand out, yet never distract. As with other Resonance releases of this nature, the material is issued for the first time ever – beautifully produced by Dutch radio in June of 1968, and presented here as an extended set with tracks that include "Very Early", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Five", "Turn Out The Stars", "Nardis", "Emily", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Alfie". A wonderful meeting of the old and new jazz underground – as drummer Joe Farnsworth works here with a host of great players that include Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, Curtis Fuller, Jim Rotondi, and Benny Golson. There's a classic soul jazz vibe running through the set that we really love – similar to that in some of Alexander's recent work, and often featuring a strong tenor in the frontline, leaping over warm piano lines that have a sweet, rhythmic feel. Titles include "Sweet Poppa", "Old Folks", "Prime Time", "And So I Love Again", "Third Plane", and "Jose's Lament". CD

Drummer Joe Farnsworth anchors a quartet with a classic soul jazz vibe – very similar to some of Eric Alexander's recent work – no surprise considering their long association, and the fact both Alexander and Harold Mabern feature prominently on this album next to bassist Nat Reeves! The session features some nice originals by Farnsworth, one track by Harold Mabern, and standards including "What A Wonderful World" and "When You Wish Upon A Star". CD

Haunting traditional country-inspired songwriting a la Carter Family, Louvin Brothers, etc from Freakwater – one of their great early 90s albums on Thrill Jockey. The were young-ish and urban-ish at the time, but they are absolutely the real thing. Aching harmonies, dusty melodies and good damn songs. It can't be overstated how unique Freakwater was in an early-to-mid 90s indie rock atmosphere, either. Includes "Crazy Man", "Pale Horse", "My Old Drunk Friend", "Amelia Earhart", "Are You Ready", "Lullaby" and more. CD

A wealth of piano trio material from the west coast scene of the 50s and early 60s – tracks pulled not only from long-lost albums by pianists Russ Freeman, Richard Twardzik, Jimmy Rowles, and Clare Fischer – but also even more obscure recordings that only appeared on Pacific Jazz collections! The scope of the package is really tremendous – as it begins with some of the first Pacific Jazz trio sides by Russ Freeman and Richard Twardzik – both done during their years with Chet Baker – then runs through Jimmy Rowles' full album Rare But Well (recorded for Liberty in 1954), a variety of shorter trio sessions by Freeman and Rowles, and Clare Fischer's early trio sides – First Time Out (1962) and Surging Ahead (1963). And as always with Mosaic, the whole thing's incredibly well done – put together with tremendous care in both the mastering and notes, so that the whole thing's not just some happy accident in jazz. 51 tracks, 3CDs, and beautiful throughout! There may be a mountain of Stan Getz records on the market – but take it from us, this is definitely one that you need in your collection! The set presents material from a never-issued live recording – Stan on sublime, soulful tenor at the Keystone Korner in 1976 – working with a quartet that includes Joanne Brackeen on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all ultra-hip players who set Stan up at a level that rivals the openly creative genius of studio albums like Sweet Rain or Captain Marvel, but with that special sort of snapshot that also marks his rare live material with Gary Burton too! The tracks were cut during the same week that produced the Getz/Gilberto 76 album, but the sound here is very different – not bossa, all jazz, and with that really inspired sense of soloing that Stan hit once he discovered Coltrane and the influence of that generation. Wonderful all the way through – with titles that include "Infant Eyes", "Summer Night", "Peace", "Con Alma", "Morning Star", and "The Cry Of The Wild Goose". CD

Stan Getz and Kenny Barron – a perfect pairing on the famous People Time record! The album was recorded quite late in Stan's career, but it also represented a new flowering too – a wonderfully mature approach to tenor sax that mixed up all the dark corners and warm moments of previous years, given beautifully subtle accompaniment in the piano of Barron. Kenny's got a way of doing a lot with a little – just like Stan – and their pairing here quickly became the stuff of legend, once the album was released. There's no other players – no bass or drums – but Kenny puts the groove together perfectly for Stan, whose blowing only seems to get more and more sublime in the space of the set. CD

A fantastic session by Jimmy Heath – cut right at the time of his best 70s soul jazz work! This obscure set was recorded in New York in 1974, but not issued in this form until the mid 90s – and it features Heath with a stellar group that includes Curtis Fuller, Stanley Cowell, Mtume, Billy Higgins, and Pat Martino. The overall sound is modal soul jazz – in the style of the best work on Strata East, with a far-reaching spiritual approach that never goes too far outside, but which is ready to explore the farther aspects of jazz-based expression. Heath is incredible – leading the group on alto and soprano, blowing post-Coltrane lines that are supported by fantastic rhythm work by Cowell, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. Tracks include "The 13th House", "Time & The Place", "The Voice Of The Saxophone", and "No End". CD

A single album combining the classic 70s Heptones sides Night Food and Party Time, two of the band's strongest albums. The first set was cut at Harry J's, and is a bit more produced than some of their earlier sides, but has some great vocal harmonies and updates of awesome Studio One rhythms, which originated with bass player and lead singer Leroy Sibbles. The follow up, Party Time, finds the Heptones teaming up with Lee Perry for a wonderful set laid down at the legendary Black Ark, with Sibbles' always great songwriting over a set of nice roots rhythms laid down by Boris Gardiner, Winston Wright, Mikey Boo, Willie Lindo and others. Includes "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty" and "Mama Say", "Party Time", "Crying Over You", "I Shall Be Released", "Why Must I" and "Sufferer's Time", 20 tracks in all. A bold return to Blue Note for pianist Andrew Hill – his first record for the label in over 15 years, and a record that echoes with the modern tones of Hill's legendary Blue Note run in the 60s! The sound here is a bit more starkly modern and obtuse – done with more of a sense of space than Hill's tenser 60s recordings, in a way that's almost a more contemplative reflection of the "new thing" ideal. All tracks are originals, and Andrew is working with a quintet that includes Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Greg Tardy on tenor and bass clarinet, John Hebert on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums. Hill and Tolliver seem to dominate the record, though – musing gently, but starkly on their respective instruments – on a set of tracks that includes "Malachi", "Time Lines", "Smooth", "Whitsuntide", and "For Emilio". One of our favorite records by Earl Hines – a hip little comeback set, recorded in the mid 60s with an Ellingtonish lineup that includes Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, and Johnny Hodges. Hines' piano is certainly a strong force in the record, but even more delightful is the solid feel of the players overall – working with that complete coherence found in the best 60s sides by Duke, but touched here with some of Hines' sprightly approach to the melody. The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone classic approach to funky soul, one that's definitely been honed to a "T" through their important work on the road during the previous few years! And Sharon Jones is great – with vocals that are way deeper and much longer-lasting than any rehab outpatient wannabe – sending home these tunes with a quality that may well pass most of her classic female soul inspirations from back in the day. And even though the set brings together some older singles and other odd bits, it's got a rock-solid punch that makes it a very unified album throughout! Valerie June's been bubbling under for almost a decade – recording work with other artists, doing a variety of projects, and finally getting her chance to shine in the spotlight with her previous debut – yet it may well be this well-crafted second album that finally puts the singer over the top! Valerie's completely her own woman here – not beholden to any sort of easy tags or cliches – including the "rootsy soul" or "folksy diva" tags that we heard batted around before – and instead, almost inventing her own genre for the record – which has a vibe that makes us guess that it's going to be the start of a huge legacy of fame to come for June. Her voice is timeless, the instrumentation is nicely understated, and the production is very easygoing – yet the whole thing comes across with a crispily compelling sound that could appeal to both hipsters and their more mainstream friends. That might sound like a dig, but it's not – just our way of illustrating the soon-to-be universal appeal of the singer! Incredible rare work from Magic Sam – a set recorded at his home in Chicago during the late 60s, and which has Sam coming across maybe more like a soul singer than ever before! The setting is very lean – just Sam on electric guitar and vocals – and it's that laidback approach that really lets the magic flow forth – these incredible vocals that could have easily been turned towards deep soul, if Sam wanted to record for Atlantic – and maybe even more powerful here without any other studio support at all! And sure, the approach is different than the better-known Magic Sam albums – but it's also a fantastic illustration of his mighty talents, as you'll hear on titles that include "I Can't Quit You Baby", "You're So Fine", "That's Why I'm Crying", "I'm So Glad", "Baby You Torture My Soul", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Give Me Time". A tremendous look at the early years of the legendary Joe McPhee – a set that's based around his classic Nation Time album, and which features other live material from the same time – including a Hat Hut album, and two CDs' worth of previously unissued work! The core album is legendary – a gritty set that features a mighty funky drummer, and some of the most soulful work that Joe ever recorded. Joe plays tenor and trumpet in sweet lineup that features bubbling organ, vamping rhythms, and some sweet modal elements mixed together in percussion, guitar, and Fender Rhodes. Titles include the hard wailing "Nation Time" – plus "Shakey Jake", an excellent 13 minute funk number – and the moodier "Scorpio's Dance". Next is the searing Black Magic Man album – an early release on the Hat Hut label, but recorded during the same December 1970 performance as Nation Time – almost showing the bolder, freer sound of the group – but still coming across with some surprising soulful elements too. The original album is expanded by the addition of the unreleased "Song For Lauren" alternate takes – and the core record includes "Black Magic Man", "Hymn Of The Dragon Kings", and "Song For Lauren". The next two CDs feature material recorded in 1969 and 1970 – at Vassar and in Poughkeepsie – with Joe and group working through some similar spiritual and soul jazz territory as on the Vassar CD issue from the same label. The music is heavy on elements you'd hear from the Nation Time album – Hammond, guitar, and even some electric bass and vibes – used in styles that run from soul jazz, to modal, to more experimental – all on very long tracks that have McPhee really stretching out on tenor and trumpet! Titles include "Cold Sweat", "Breakaway Theme", "Untitled", "Nation Time", "Sunshower", "Spring Street", and "Contemplation". The first-ever set of duets between Joe McPhee and Fred Lonberg-Holm – two players who've improvised often in other settings on the Chicago scene over the years – but who somehow never had the time to take off like this on their own! Fred's working at his highest level of sonic intensity here – both on cello and on electronics – and McPhee continues to blow us away as the years go on – opening up here on tenor in ways that maybe make even his early classics seem tame by comparison – showing a tremendous understanding of his instrument and all its many sonic possibilities, and in ways that aren't just about pure power, but about an honest, open, human sort of sympathy that fits the situation. the album features three long tracks, all improvised – "That Time", "This Time", and "Next Time". A warm later set from Carmen McRae – recorded with great small combo jazz backing that features tenor sax work from Clifford Jordan! The album's a real back-to-basics one for McRae – and gets away from crossover modes used in the 60s and 70s, taking Carmen back to the more jazz-based sound of her earliest records – but going even one further by bringing in Jordan, since Carmen mostly started out with straight trio backing. Other players include Eric Gunnison on piano and John Collins on guitar – and the tunes themselves are mostly standards, sung with impeccable phrasing. Titles include "Tulip Or Turnip", "Body & Soul", "I Hear Music", "This Is Always", "It Could Happen To You", "Old Devil Moon", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". CD

A really unusual album from the young Stephanie Mills – not only because it captures the singer at a wonderful early point in her career, when she was still open to a rich range of expression – but also because the whole thing was written and produced by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David – who almost work with Mills as a 70s update of their classics with Dionne Warwick! Yet the sound here is also different – deeper in that nicely matured way that Burt had brought to his own great albums and special projects of the time – with these sensitive emotional moments that are a real surprise from Mills, especially as she could have just been phoning it in at this point. Backings are definitely Bacharach-like, but nicely subtle too – again like the direction Burt himself was going at the time – and titles include "No One Remembers My Name", "Loneliness Remembers (What Happiness Forgets)", "This Empty Place", "The Way I Fell About You", and "All The Way To Paradise". One of our favorite Thelonious Monk albums ever – a bare bones, no nonsense session that's filled with great work from tenorist Charlie Rouse! The record's filled with everything that's great about the Monk/Rouse team in these years – an incredible interplay between sax and piano, served up over the sorts of angular tunes that Monk had been putting forth for years, but somehow at a level that's even more perfect, more "Monkish" than before!
