✨✧ Dizzy GillespieSonny Rollins/Sonny Stitt Sessions ... LP
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Of the classic "big names get together for a session" albums on Verve, the best ones always seem to be the ones with one of the "Sonnys" in the list of leaders. This one compiles titles from the Sonny Side Up album – which featured Stitt and Rollins, plus others from 1957 sessions in which Diz played with one or the other player. The set's a beautiful batch of long tracks with lots of blowing room, and a deep soulful hardbop groove that you don't always hear on Verve. The rhythm section for all groups is comprised of Ray Bryant, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip – who are part of the reason for the magnanimous groove of the set – and titles include "After Hours", "Con Alma", "Haute Mon", "Sumphin", "Weatleigh Hall", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". ✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Rollins & Sonny StittDuets ... CD
Verve, Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jam session albums on Verve! Although some of the label's "big horn talent" albums tended to be a bit snoozy, this one crackles with energy, and features three different classes of boppers working together perfectly on long, lively tracks with Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. In fact, it's probably the soulful rhythm section that makes the whole thing so darn good – as they really chop up some nice rhythms on cuts like "Wheatleigh Hall", "Haute Mon", and the album's classic version of "Con Alma", plus an alternate take of "Con Alma" and the previously unreleased "Anythin'". Great stuff, and essential for fans of Diz and Rollins especially! CD

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny RollinsSonny Side Up ... CD
Verve/Polygram, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little blowing session for Verve – one that has Dizzy Gillespie working here with two different "Sonnys" – Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, both of whom play tenor on the set! The tracks here are all quite long and open – more loose vehicles for extended soloing than the usual sort of Verve tracks – almost a mini-jam session with the three horn giants in the lead. Rhythm is from the trio of Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the real stars are the horn players – not just Diz, who cuts some of his hippest lines of the late 50s here, but also Rollins and Stitt, who seem to get a bit more care in recording than they did over at Prestige earlier in the decade. Album features 4 long tracks – "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "After Hours", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". CD

✨✧ Modern Jazz Quartet with Sonny RollinsModern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn – Guest Artist Sonny Rollins ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
The Modern Jazz Quartet with a very noteworthy addition – the great Sonny Rollins, whose work on this record really makes it a cut above the usual MJQ outing for Atlantic! As on the quartet's previous Music Inn album with Jimmy Giuffre, the addition of a reed player really inflects their trademark sound with a new range of sounds and feelings – and Rollins himself cuts back on the hardbop influences, and shows some great restraint in matching some of the group's more modern modes. Sonny only plays on 2 of the album's 6 tracks – but that's enough to open it up nicely – and on other numbers, the MJQ begin in their usual mellower mode, but then seem to step things up with more boppish inflections, almost anticipating Rollins' arrival on the last 2 numbers. Sonny plays on the tunes "Bag's Groove" and "Night In Tunisia" – and other titles include "Midsommer", "Festival Sketch", "Yardbird Suite", and an opening medley. LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/OJC, 1953/1954. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A full length set that compiles earlier sessions cut under either the name of Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins – most of them together in the same group! At the time of recording, Monk was an established figure on the bop scene, but Rollins was still a fresh voiced up-and-comer – yet they work together beautifully here on an early take of "Friday The Thirteenth" which really benefits from Rollins' voicing on tenor, next to Monk's angular arrangement. The pair also perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want To Be Happy" with a quartet – twisting the familiar tunes into strongly Monkish territory – and the album's last 2 tracks, "Nutty" and "Work" are performed by Monk with a trio that includes Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. A beautiful soundtrack to the dark British comedy of the same name – starring a young Michael Caine! You might expect it to be a bit schmaltzy, but it's pure jazz all the way through, and features strong inside playing by Rollins over lively orchestrations by Oliver Nelson – filled with moody colors, great changes, and a vibrant sense of energy that's far deeper than the actual film! The group includes Phil Woods, Kenny Burrell, and J.J. Johnson, and they swing hard on all tracks. A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowing late 50s sessions might not expect the album to work – but instead, it sets up his playing in a whole new mode that brings out a leaner, more confident, more sophisticated solo mode that shows that his time woodshedding in retirement was well spent. Rollins playing is impeccable, with a maturity not heard in his late 50's work, and the whole album is a beautiful study in measured, thoughtful soloing. Tracks include "John S.", "The Bridge", and "God Bless the Child". CD

Sonny Meets Hawk is one of the best-ever Sonny Rollins albums, and proof that Hawk was a modernist who could match wits with the best players of the 60's. The group that backs the two tenor giants up includes Paul Bley on piano, Henry Grimes on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums, and they spur both Hawk and Sonny into solos that are totally amazing, and which stand as some of the best recorded work the two of them did in the 60's. Victor (Japan), 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas". This 2CD version features a full bonus disc of previously unreleased work from the concert – 3 titles that include "Hold Em Joe", "Sais", and "God Bless The Child". CD

An underrated 70s effort from Sonny Rollins, featuring him fronting a dynamite group with Stanley Cowell and Mtume at the height of their Afro-centric electric jazz period. Longtime sideman Bob Cranshaw plus David Lee round out the rhythm section, and this is one of Rollins' LPs featuring the excellent Japanese guitarist Masuo, plus Rufus Harley guests on one number, so you can guess this is one righteous affair. Rollins sounds awesome, laying extended solos over some tremendous funky vamps by the group on numbers like "The Cutting Edge" and "First Moves", and working in a more contemplative vein on "To A Wild Rose" and "A House Is Not A Home". Also includes a lengthy take on "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most free-wheeling Sonny Rollins albums of the 60s – an album that features some very long, extended tracks that really break out from some of the straighter moments of Sonny's mid-60s recordings! The title track is an incredible 20 minute workout – one that almost feels improvised, but which is never too free – always pulsating with a killer groove from the drums of Elvin Jones and bass of Jimmy Garrison – and featuring the trumpet of Freddie Hubbard in the frontline with Rollins' tenor – blowing with quite an edge throughout! Riverside, 1958. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A crucially important record in Sonny Rollins' career – one that had him breaking out of the straight bop sound, and emerging as a major power on the tenor sax – one with limitless creative power! The set features Rollins working with only drum and bass accompaniment – played by Max Roach and Oscar Pettiford, respectively – and the lack of piano or other horns gives Rollins a free space in which to work his magic, doing so incredibly on the album's "Freedom Suite", an extended piece that runs for nearly 20 minutes, and which pushes all conceptions of the tenor's ability to solo freely on record. The other side of the record features shorter tracks – "Shadow Waltz", "Someday I'll Find You", and "Will You Still Be Mine?" – blown with no less creativity. LP, Vinyl record album

CD

Mindblowing work from tenorist Sonny Rollins – a set of recordings that we'd rank right up there with his groundbreaking Village Vanguard sessions for Blue Note! As with those recordings, the setting here is live, and a trio – Sonny blowing with incredible imagination in the very open space of the tunes, many of which are very long – with accompaniment from the wonderful bassist Henry Grimes on all numbers, and a shifting lineup of very hip drummers – Pete LaRoca on most tracks, sometimes replaced by Joe Harris or Kenny Clarke. The huge package features a wealth of live tracks, including some material that has been bootlegged before – concerts from 1959 in Stockholm, Zurich, Aix-En-Provence, Frankfurt, and Laren – all presented here with superb sound, voluminous notes, and through cooperation with Sonny Rollins himself. Titles include "Lady Bird", "But Not For Me", "Cocktails For Two", "I Want To Be Happy", "Oleo", "Paul's Pal", "Love Letters", and "I've Told Every Little Star" – but as always with live Sonny Rollins at this point in his career, it's not the melodies, but what he does with them – which is amazing! Very open-ended work from Sonny Rollins – a set of live tracks recorded for use in the film Saxophone Colossus, with some nicely long tunes that really show Rollins' inventive solo approach in such a setting! The group here is a quintet – with the excellent Clifton Anderson on trombone, plus Mark Soskin on piano, Marvin Smitty Smith on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on electric bass – providing that unique bubbling pulse that Rollins used frequently in the 70s and 80s – something you might not have expected from years past, but which gave records like this a really signature sound, and showed that Sonny was still growing in the ways he experimented with styles. Titles include the 15 minute title track "G Man", plus "Kim" and "Don't Stop The Carnival". CD features a bonus 12 minute version of "Tenor Madness". CD

Some tunes have that island-tinged style that Rollins started exploring from his RCA years onward – and titles include "Global Warming", "Island Lady", "Echo-Side Blue", "Change Partners", and "Mother Nature's Blues". Contemporary/Craft, Late 50s. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
Two classic albums from the great Sonny Rollins – both made during some time on the LA scene of the late 50s, and matched here with a more obscure third album that issued alternate sides from the sessions! First up is the classic Way Out West – a set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! Despite Rollins' silly look on the cover, and the album's overall "western" theme, the session's a brilliant one – right up there with Sonny's strongest trio sides of the late 50s, and a key link in a string of excellent recordings for Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside! The lack of a piano really opens up the style of the set – letting Sonny explore freely on his solos, while Brown's bass and Manne's drums do more than enough to keep the rhythms going on their own. Solos aren't as "out" as on the Village Vanguard sessions, but certainly every bit as inspired – and titles include "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Solitude", "Come, Gone", "Way Out West", and "Wagon Wheels". Next is Sonny Rollins & The Contemporary Leaders – one of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Sonny's blowing in front of a session of "leaders" that includes Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne, and Victor Feldman, who plays vibes on one track. Sonny's the real leader here, though – as his bold, proud tenor tone really takes front seat, carving lines that never get tired, bringing a sparkle into tunes like "You", "How High The Moon", "I've Found A New Baby", "The Song Is You", and "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star". Heck, even with songs like those, the album should be weak – but there's an undeniable magic that really makes it great! Last is Contemporary Alternate Takes – a great collection of alternate takes from Sonny's landmark recordings for Contemporary Records in the late 50s – material recorded in LA with an easier-swinging groove than some of his New York work, in a style that let Sonny blow in round, warm, and really open tones – almost foreseeing his work for RCA in the mid 60s. Players include Ray Brown, Shelly Manne, Victor Feldman, and Barney Kessel – and the set features alternate takes of "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Come Gone", "Way Out West", "The Song Is You", and "You". CD
(A great package – with new mastering, and a big booklet of notes!)

Quintessence Jazz/Pickwick, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA, with a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality than some of Sonny's earlier records, and one that brings out some sharper tones in his horn, even on the mellower numbers. The rhythm support is loose, but somewhat soulful and spontaneous – and features Ray Bryant on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – an unusual pairing for Sonny, but that's what makes them so great. In a way, the album's almost Rollins' equivalent of John Coltrane's earlier Ballads album for Impulse – in that it includes familiar tunes, but remade into completely new numbers by the sound of the leader. Titles include "Green Dolphin Street", "Three Little Words", "Hold Em Joe", "The Blue Room", plus "Alfie's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the most compelling work that Sonny Rollins recorded in the 60s – served up here in a helping of his 3 albums for Impulse Records! Rollins only stopped at the label briefly – and didn't contribute as much to the Impulse catalog as other 60s tenor heavyweights like John Coltrane or Archie Shepp – but each of his 3 records for the company are real gems, and the best tracks from those sides are presented nicely in this introductory package! Incredible! If you've ever wondered why people think Sonny Rollins is so great, you owe it to yourself to own this album, because it's one that stands as one of the best 5 that Rollins ever cut, and because it features him playing in a stripped-down raw setting that lets his full solo talent come to the forefront. The material was all recorded in 1957 as part of his famous Village Vanguard session for Blue Note, but it was unreleased until 1975, when Blue Note put out this double LP set of the tracks with great notes by Bob Blumenthal. Every cut's a winner, and Rollins plays in two different trio settings – one with Donald Bailey and Pete La Roca, the other with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. It's all great, and will make you a fan of his for life! LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Camden, 1964. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A killer album from Sonny Rollins' prime 60s years at RCA – almost a return to basics, but always with that edge that makes Rollins stand out way more than most of his contemporaries – a subtle balance between straight and modern that really makes the album crackle! The album features Sonny working with Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter or Bob Cranshaw on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums – and a bit of welcome additional cornet from Thad Jones – sounding great here in a small group setting. Tracks are mostly jazz standards, but done with an incredible poise on the solos – completely transforming the tunes with Rollins' rich imagination! Titles include "52nd St Theme", "Round Midnight", "Four", "Afternoon In Paris", "St Thomas", and "I Remember Clifford". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s issue. Cover has minimal wear.)

Milestone, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet electric set from Sonny Rollins – and maybe the closest he ever came to cutting a funk record! The set's got that mellow electric funk approach that Prestige was using often in the mid 70s – Sonny's tenor lines getting some great Bay Area studio support from George Duke on keyboards, Bennie Maupin on reeds, Raul De Souza on trombone, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, and even Mtume on congas – players who work together to create a tight ensemble sound that moves the album nicely along! Titles include the great cut "Newkleus", a space funk jammer that has a nice Headhunters-ish kind of sound – and other tracks include "Gwaligo", "Azalea", and "Cosmet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and is wrinkled at the opening.)

Milestone, 1993. Used ... $1.99 2.99
Late Sonny Rollins on Milestone, and a record with some really wonderful horn interplay – thanks to a group that includes an added brass lineup on a few cuts! The core combo, a quintet, features wonderful trombone from Clifton Anderson – a player who really made some of Rollins' records from this stretch light up nicely – bringing in a deeper sound on an instrument that Sonny didn't always work with in the past. The titles, as you might expect from the album's name, are "old flames" – standards worked nicely by Sonny, Anderson, and a group that also features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Tracks include "Prelude To A Kiss", "Darn That Dream", "Where Or When", "My Old Flame", and "Times Slimes". CD

Sonny Meets Hawk features a landmark live meeting with Coleman Hawkins; Our Man In Jazz is an extended live workout, with some of his most adventurous blowing to date; What's New has a great inflection of Latin and Caribbean rhythms in the music; Now's The Time is a wonderful quartet date with Herbie Hancock on piano, and guest cornet from Thad Jones; and Standard Sonny Rollins is a return to inside playing, but with key evidence of the modern lessons from previous records. Each album comes packaged in a tiny 5" record sleeve – just like the original – and all are contained in a larger slipcase too. RCA/Bluebird, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A double album collecting Newk's excellent quartet recordings with Jim Hall for RCA. As such it contains work from The Bridge and What's New?, plus a few numbers that got tacked onto the Standard Sonny Rollins. 13 numbers in all, including "John S.", "The Bridge", "You Do Something To Me", "Where Are You", "Without A Song", "If Ever I Would Leave You", "Brownskin Girl", "Don't Swtop The Carnival", "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", "My Ship", "Love Letters", "Long Ago (An Far Away)" and "God Bless the Child". Sonny RollinsReel Life ... CD
Milestone/OJC, 1982. Used ... $3.99
An overlooked Sonny Rollins set from the early 80s – one that has him recording with a fair bit of guitar, but still staying very much in his best form as an improviser! The group here features both Bobby Broom on electric guitar, and Yoshiaki Masuo on acoustic and electric – both players who get in plenty of sound during the set, but always as a follow-up to Rollins' bold tenor voice in the lead. Remaining group members include Bob Cranshaw on electric bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and although the electric strings might normally make for a smooth sort of record, Sonny's sharper sound still brings plenty of edge – even when the rhythms of a few tunes get a bit bright. Titles include "My Little Brown Book", "Reel Life", "McGhee", "Rosita's Best Friend", and "Best Wishes". CD

Stunning rare material from Sonny Rollins – from a period when he wasn't doing that much work in the studio! The double-length package features Sonny blowing with a great sense of majesty and freedom – working in trio format that recalls his classic Vanguard recordings for Blue Note – but with Ruud Jacobs on bass and Han Bennink on drums – both great players who really help Rollins keep his modern edge! This isn't just a pickup overseas rhythm section – as Bennink is fantastic, at a point right before he was moving into free jazz – and Jacobs is a hell of a bassist who always makes a group sound great. The tenor of Sonny Rollins pays tribute to the alto of Charlie Parker – in a landmark set that's one of Sonny's real standout 50s sessions for Prestige! Sonny's tone on the tenor is proud and bold throughout – able to shift and turn in the spirit of Bird, but also very much in Rollins' own highly inventive mode as well. The group features Max Roach on drums – who cut a contemporary Bird tribute of his own on Mercury – plus Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Wade Legge on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Titles include a "Bird Medley" that takes up all of side one – featuring "Old Folks", "Star Eyes", "Just Friends", and "My Little Suede Shoes", all given the Parker twist – and side 2 features a great long cut called "Kids Know", plus a shorter take on "I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face". 2 classic Prestige sides from Sonny Rollins – back to back on one CD! First up is Saxophone Colossus, quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". Next up is the equally great Worktime – a record that perfectly illustrates why Rollins was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". CD
