Very nice! Tenorist Tina Brooks had one rare album released for Blue Note (the classic True Blue), but he also recorded 3 others for the label which never came out. The group's a great one – a sextet with Donaldson on alto, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Sonny Clark on piano, Jamil Nasser on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – the last of whom is very much at home in the setting, and does a great job of directing the energy of the group. Quite an unusual Lou Donaldson album for Blue Note – much more open-ended than his other sets, with a really hard-jamming sort of sound! Unlike some of Donaldson's tighter dates of the time, which feature more bop-based, song-based shorter tunes – this one's more of a long-form blowing session, much more of the date you'd expect to hear from Prestige in the late 50s – and a bit like some of the work that Lou did on some of Jimmy Smith's all-star blowing dates from the same time. A lost chapter in the career of Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui – a beautiful solo set recorded quite a few years after his famous early classics – but a set that shows Fukui still every bit as full of imagination as before! There's no bass or drums on the set, but many tunes have Ryo taking off with an inherent sense of rhythm that's really wonderful – lyrical leaps on the keys of the piano that just keep charming us all over again – both on tunes of his own, and favorites by Sonny Clark and Barry Harris! A beautiful little session from trombonist Curtis Fuller – and quite possibly the most obscure of all his Blue Note albums, all of which are pretty darn obscure! The Fuller heard here is in a softer, gentler mode than on some of his hardbop stormers for other labels – laying back with a sweet sense of lyricism and soulful soloing – and playing in an excellent group that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Farmer's horn proves to be a perfect counterpoint to Fuller's trombone – and they both bring out the best qualities in each other's work – Farmer, by forcing Fuller to find a bit more space between the notes; and Fuller, by getting Farmer to bite into the groove a bit more. Tracks are long – and titles include "Carvon", "Two Quarters Of A Mile", and "Little Messenger". CD
