Aum definitely have some of the bluesvibes mentioned in the title – but as the cover would imply, they're also in trippier territory too – a tight power trio of the late 60s generation when less members in a group could often mean an even heavier sound – with lots more focus on the guitar, bass, and drums! Wayne Ceballas handles lead vocals, guitar, organ, and harmonica – and the group hail from San Francisco – where their appreciation of blues roots was mixing with lots of the freewheeling energy of the Fillmore scene – and we mean that in the best way possible! A much more rock-based album than some of Baker's other post-Cream work – but still with some nice grooves that appeal plenty to our ears! The weaker tracks on the album are sort of in a quirky rock mode – but the better ones feature some snapping percussion from Baker and the group, and some nice Afro-styled touches that recall the best Air Force sounds. Stanky Brown have a sound here that's very much in keeping with their look on the cover – confident and cheeky 70s cats who can lay down a record that's tight, but easygoing too – on a set that's very much the sort that got all the right sort of funding and attention in the studio, but which never fully got its due in the mainstream! Songs are all well-penned – catchy, but never too cloying – and the style is slightly sharper than the smoothness of the AOR generation – on tracks that include "Falling Fast", "Chains", "Chance On Love", "She's A Taker", "Please Don't Be The One", "Master Of Disguise", and "Back In Your Arms Again". One of those 70s records that has everything going for it, but somehow never got a chance to get off the mark – well-written and catchy tunes, a tight approach to production that's also somehow fresh, and a sense of personality that marks this second set by the band to be one where they're really hitting their stride!
