Incredible female pop from 60s France – not weepy ballads or old school Paris numbers, but the kind of hip-snapping, all-groovy material that made the 60s French scene so great! Loads of these tracks are new to our ears (and we love French grooves a lot!) – and this volume of the series seems to dig even deeper than before – through a range of rare 7" EP material and singles, to come up with some killer tracks that will move way beyond the bigger cuts you might know from Francoise Hardy or Brigitte Bardot. A wealth of rare work from Jamaican studio genius Bunny Striker Lee – unusual cuts and unreleased material – all of it a further testament to his legendary ear for a mindblowing sound! These aren't half-baked cuts, or material that deserved to fall to the cutting room floor – because the style is years ahead of its time, and put together with techniques and styles that are still pretty darn revolutionary after all these many years! Some tracks have a strong vocal presence, others are more instrumental – and in addition to Lee's famous flying cymbals technique, there's lots more going on here too – including some totally cool space age sounds. A killer collection of reggae remakes of famous soul and funk tunes – all served up from a later generation of the scene, which makes a nice change from some of the more ska and rocksteady collections of this nature! It's no secret that Jamaican music was initially given a strong inspiration from American soul – and even in this generation, when the Kingston scene had really found its own groove, other influences would still come into the music in a really great way – as you'll hear on these really cool reworkings of themes from Ohio Players, McFadden & Whitehead, Barry White, and others! The production of most of these cuts is great – different than some of the more disco-oriented material that would copy American work – more laidback, with some currents of lovers rock as well – and funky, but in a laidback way. The jazzy genius of Tatsuo Sunaga gets turned in a cool direction here – as the set's an imagined soundtrack for the voyage of Crouka – the dog who disappeared from the launch of the Soviet rocket Soyuz2! That story hardly needs to be part of the description, though – as the record is overflowing with music that more than stands on its own – that wonderfully jazzy take on Japanese club that Sunaga served up so well during his glory days – live instrumentation mixed with clubby rhythms – in a lineup that includes vocals from Vince Andrews, Aaron Blackmon, Kirsty Hawkshaw, and even the great jazz singer Sheila Landis – who does a fantastic job on one number! There's light strings at a few points, fleshing out the sound wonderfully – and the set also features a few cool spoken bits and links – on titles that include "It's You", "Kid", "Welcome", "C'Est Vous Sur Le Pont", "Theme From Sunaga T Experience", and "Istonichoff".
