A wonderful small group session from tenor genius Charlie Rouse – done at the time when he was first taking off with Thelonious Monk, but in a great style that's all his own! The group features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Walter Bishop on piano, Earl May on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – all coming together in a style that's more Prestige/Riverside than some of Rouse's other work, including his Jazz Modes material. Titles include "Upptankt", "Blue Farouq", "Wierdo", "204", and "Pretty Strange" – the latter two of which are originals by Randy Weston, making a first appearance on this session. CD

A nice Prestige 2-fer collecting two early sides Mongo cut for Fantasy in the late 50s. The first, released under the title Mongo, is a no-nonsense batch of Latin jazz tracks, arranged by himself and Francisco Aguabella, who's sort of the co-leader of the group on the set! Players include Emil Richards, Paul Horn, Armando Pereza, Carlos Vidal, and Willie Bobo – and as you can imagine by that lineup, there's plenty of heavy duty percussive action! Jose Chombo Silva plays a bit of tenor – and titles include "Chano Pozo", "Mazacote", "Los Conguitos", and "Afro Blue". Yambu, another of Mongo's great early records, is the second LP of the set. It's got a spooky Afro-Cuban sound, and a great assortment of drummers that includes Francisco Aquabella, Carlos Vidal, Willie Bobo, and Modesto Duran. The overall vibe is much more traditional than Mongo's other albums – and there's none of the pop Latin jazz of his years at Columbia records, or his "Watermelon Man" era at Riverside. Cuts include "Mi Guanguanco", "Timbales & Bongo", "Yeye", and "Columbia", and the sound is nice and raw. LP, Vinyl record album

A great little Pretige blowing session album – featuring long long tracks, played by 2 groups of different players, both led by trumpeter Idrees Sulieman! Side one features the track "Roots" – a great laidback groover played by a sextet that include Sulieman on trumpet, Pepper Adams on Baritone, Frank Rehak on trombone, Bill Evans on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Side two has Sulieman in the company of Cecil Payne on baritone, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – on two tracks ("Down By The Riverside" and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child"), both arranged by Alonzo Levister – with a dark feeling that's very unique. An incredible album that has Cleanhead moving way past his usual bag! Sure, he's normally known as an R&B vocalist and alto player, but here, in one of those great Riverside "Cannonball Adderley Presents" sessions, Vinson gets into a whole new bag on some cuts. He's playing with Cannonball's group of Nat, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes – and there's one track in particular that's amazing – "Arriving Soon", an instrumental that has Vinson soaring on alto, wailing with an almost Coltrane-esque level of freedom. It's a killer modal track, and is worth the price of the album alone. There's another instrumental called "Vinsonology", plus vocal numbers like "Hold It", "This Time", and "Kidney Stew" – all with a nice groovy Adderley quintet kind of groove.
