A really great compilation put out by the folks at Red Hot – an organization dedicated to "Fighting Aids Through Popular Culture". Previous sets by the group have focussed on jazz, bossa, and other music – and this time around, the focus is Africa, currently suffering from a rampant AIDS epidemic. As a response to the problem, Red Hot have brought together a host of different artists in a set of new Afro Funk tracks that would do Fela proud! In fact, over and above the politics, the set's actually one of the best new Afro Funk projects we've ever heard – with a list of artists that includes Archie Shepp, Lateef, Gift Of Gab, Talib Kweli, Jorge Ben, D'Angelo, Femi Kuti, Macy Gray, Meshell Ndegeocello, Cheikh Lo, Tony Allen, Positive Black Soul, Kelis, and others – all coming together in a really wonderful set of tracks that crackle with excitement! Unfortunately, one of Aids most famous African victims includes Afro Funk pioneer Fela. There's definitely strong traces of Tyner and Hancock – given Allen's usually soulful undercurrent – but there's also a heavy dose of Taylor, too, as Geri really uses the freer space of the recording to stretch out in some pretty unbridled ways – really surprising us with her inventiveness, and still usually holding onto a rhythmic pulse somewhere deep in the mix. A great slice of New Orleans soul from the 70s – a record that replicates the "Indian" culture in the Mardi Gras scene – and which is most notable for featuring work by The Meters as well! The groove here is kind of Meters-styled funk, mixed with some fuller New Orleans mode – as the core Wild Tchoupitoulas group get a nice kick at the core – which makes their lyrics and calls come off even better than in a live setting! The album also gets kickass production from Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn – and is one of the crowning funk jewels in Toussaint's crown for the 70s. The New Mastersounds shake it strongly here – still with all the great core energy of their classic quartet lineup – but further expanded with excellent lead vocals from Lamar Williams, plus a bit of tenor and trumpet too! The group have always been funky, but they've got a nicely different focus here when working with a singer – maybe more snapping and sock-soul, yet still driven strongly by the excellent guitar solos of Eddie Roberts too – not to mention Joe Tatton on keyboard, Pete Shand on bass, and Simon Allen on drums! Hard-blown baritone from the great Serge Chaloff – one of the greatest jazz players on his instrument, heard here in a set of key late 40s recordings! Serge is perhaps best known for his 2 albums on Captiol – Blue Serge and Boston Blowup – but this collection offers up a great range of earlier 78rpm sessions, recorded for labels that include Motif, Mercer, Keynote, and Savoy – and it stands as a great complement to Capitol sessions. The sides a great progression from swing to bop – and feature Chaloff with players that include Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Allen Eager, Al Haig, George Wallington, Ralph Burns, and Nat Pierce. 22 tracks in all – with titles that include "Blue Serge", "Curbstone Shuffle", "Pennies From Heaven", "Gabardine & Serge", "Serge's Urge", "A Bar A Second", and "We The People". A beautiful version of one of Erroll Garner's best-selling albums ever – in a special oversized package that features the full unedited concert on two CDs, plus a third CD with the original edited album and special interview material too! The album's a famous live date recorded in the mid 50s – and a record that's as important to his catalog as the classic Misty! Garner's playing before an apparently large audience, but the recording quality is still nice and clear – a strong focus on his amazing work on the keys of the piano – filled with rhythmic invention at every turn, in a way that can only be described as Garner-esque, and which still leaves us breathless after all these years. Despite the oft-heard power of the record, it's still a great one – worthy of discovery even if it wasn't a hit, and still great even if it was. Rhythm is by Eddie Calhoun on bass and Denzil Best on drums – and the 3CD package was co-produced by pianist Geri Allen, with a total of 36 tracks that include "Teach Me Tonight", "I'll Remember April", "Autumn Leaves", "Red Top", "April In Paris", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Erroll's Theme", and "Where Or When". CD

Wonderful live work from the second chapter of Billie Holiday's career – that stretch when she was barred from performing in most New York clubs, due to the loss of her cabaret card – which actually seemed to lead to a wider range of exposure in venues across the country! The overstuffed 2CD set brings together a number of very well-recorded live dates from cities that include Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston – plus work from a show in Brussels, and a TV appearance on Steve Allen's early Tonight Show – some material that's only been out partially before, mixed with other tracks that are seeing the light of day for the first time ever. Most numbers have very small combo backing – with players who include Carl Drinkard, Jimmy Rowles, or Bobby Tucker on piano – plus Herbie Harper on trombone, Neal Hefti on trumpet, Red Norvo on vibes, and Paul Quinichette on tenor. But the real star is clearly Billie throughout – and these tracks aren't just "extras" added to her studio work or live sides for Verve – and instead show how Holiday always shone throughout her career, and continued to bring a very personal approach to every performance. 2CD set features a whopping 42 tracks, with lots of notes – and titles include a number of Holiday standards, plus some lesser-known gems too. Beautiful bass work from 50s LA player Red Callender – heard here on his classic Swingin Suite album for Modern, plus tracks from the MGM album Lowest! Swingin Suite is easily one of Red's tightest sessions – a date that has Callender's basslines strongly leading a nonet of players that includes Harry Jones on trumpet, John Ewing on trombone, Willie Green on alto sax, and Buddy Collette on flute and tenor. Collette's lines have a nice sharp edge throughout, and soar out beautifully amidst the bigger backings – and although a "suite", the whole session's got a much more relaxed feel than that compositional title might make you think. Tracks include "On Again", "Greenery", "Pastel", "Dancers", "October Blue", "Bihari", "Skyline", and "Outlines". The remaining tracks on the set were recorded as part of Callender's Lowest album for MGM – a set of both bass and tuba work. Tracks included here feature Callender on bass only, with Gerald Wilson on trumpet and Collette again on flute and tenor. Buddy plays alto, tenor, clarinet, and flute – using the horns with wonderful invention that really showcases his unique style of the time – that mix of modern and playful modes you'd hear in the Chico Hamilton group when Collette was around! There's a number of great tunes here with Nat singing, but also a whole bunch of recordings that shine a light on his impeccable work as a group piano player of the finest caliber, working as Nat King Cole and under some funny pseudonyms while he was recording hits for Capitol! Packaged stunningly, even by Hip-O Select Standards – essentially housing the CDs in a hardcover book of 31-pages with an essay by David Ritz, 7 3/8" square package with detailed session notes, and beautifully reproduced art work from original 78s and 10-inch LPs! Disc one features 17 tracks by the King Cole Trio with Nat singing and at the piano, with Oscar Moore on guitar and and Wesley Prince on bass: "Sweet Lorraine", "This Side Up", "Babs", "Scotchin' With The Soda", "Slow Down", "Hit That Jive, Jack" and more. Seminal sounds from the LA scene of the late 40s – one of the most important records to showcase the tenor talents of the legendary Wardell Gray – a key player on the harder side of the west coast for its formative bop years – and one whose career was cut short all too soon! The material here really shows that strong LA tradition of fervent jam session work – recorded here with Gray alongside additional tenor from Vido Musso – plus guitar from Barney Kessel and Irving Ashby, trumpet from Ernie Royal and Howard McGhee, trombone from Vic Dickenson, piano from Arnold Ross and Erroll Garner, and bass from Red Callender and Harry Babison. An incredible legacy of jazz – one that's certainly as disconnected as promised by the title, but which stands as a much-needed look at the many-sided talents of tenorist Allen Lowe! The set's on ESP Records, but often has sounds that are somewhat straight ahead – although often in a way that's a bit more than you might expect – as Lowe's a player with a strong knowledge of older generations of jazz, but who can put things together with a very contemporary ear – maybe best summed up in the Avant Garde Tribute To Louis Armstrong – a Knitting Factory performance that's part of this set. Lowe works with a compelling range of musicians throughout – maybe most importantly, trumpeter Doc Cheatham, who shows that in the 80s and 90s, he was still very open to new ideas – as well as Percy France and David Murray on tenor, Randy Sandke on trumpet, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Matthew Shipp on piano and Farfisa organ – and many others along the way. The massive 8CD set features countless rare recordings from over 40 years of Lowe's career – private recordings, live sets, and lots more – a huge addition not just to his own catalog, but a revelation of a connecting web on the east coast scene for decades! CD

A mindblowingly beautiful set of solo tenor tracks by Joe McPhee – a record that's almost as important to that instrument as Anthony Braxton's For Alto set was for the alto sax! The record features just Joe blowing, and nothing else – stretching out in open space, and slowly exploring his tone and sound with a confidence and creative energy that's totally great. The sound is never too far out, and one thing we really appreciate is Joe's sense of timing here – almost a bit of a swing in some of the tracks, even though there's no other instrumentation backing him up. Yet that quality also doesn't hold him back from really reaching out, either – and there's a tonal quality to the solos that's really beautiful – like Sonny Rollins at his 60s creative best, but even more unfettered. Titles include "Knox", "Sweet Drago", "Good Bye Tom B", and "Tenor". CD adds in the bonus track "Fallen Angels" – also solo, but much rawer, and recorded a year after the main album. CD

Rance Allen was one of the greatest singers on Stax who never made it during the 70s – probably because he labored in obscurity on Stax's subsidiary Truth label, a gospel imprint where Allen was unjustly stuck because of his roots in the music. Truth is, his work had as much soul as it did gospel – probably even more so as the years wore on and he started to get more secularized. The tracks on this set are as good an introduction to Allen's work as you'll find – and they're filled with great piano work (acoustic and electric), plus loads of tracks sung in Allen's rich soulful style. Titles include "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", "Ain't No Need of Crying", "I Belong To You", "Smile", "I Know A Man Who", and "I Got To Be Myself". CD

Freddy Cole serves up a tribute to his famous brother Nat – in a small combo set that also features some nice tenor work from Houston Person and Harry Allen too! Cole's a singer who's ultimately had a lot more of a career than Nat – and we're not entirely sure why he's so often lumped together in settings like this – but the record's a real testament to Freddy's talents in the way he doesn't slavishly repeat Nat's phrasing, and instead makes these classic Cole tunes very much his own. The more jazz-based presentation helps a lot with that – and in addition to the tenor solos, the record also features work from Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Josh Brown on trombone, Randy Napoleon on guitar, and John DiMartino on piano. Titles include "Love Is The Thing", "Jet", "Exactly Like You", "That's My Girl", "The Best Man", and "Maybe It's Because I Love You Too Much". CD

Tremendous trumpets from Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw – a real standout from the mid 80s revival years of Blue Note – and a perfect setting for both players! The tracks are long, but tight too – with just the right balance of solo voices from Hubbard and Shaw – and excellent additional work on alto and flute from a young Kenny Garrett! The rhythms have a fluid feel that are especially great for Hubbard's approach – and are handled by Mulgrew Miller on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Carl Allen on drums. Titles include "Desert Moonlight", "Lotus Blossum", "Hub-Tones", "Lament For Booker", and "Boperation". CD

Two of our favorite trumpet players of all time team up with a group of then-young lions for a late 80s session of killer material – definitely one of the best Blue Note new recordings of the time! Kenny Garrett, Mulgrew Miller, Ray Drummond and Carl Allen join Freddie and Woody for one of Woody's last dates, and the playing is filled with fire from the get go. Shaw's complex modern approach plays nicely off of Hubbard's soulful style . A really great collection of work that sets the scene for the London Underground of the 60s – that heady cultural scene that was about to burst forth and shower the world with a huge range of new music that would influence listeners for decades to come! This package isn't that music – in that most of the artists here are American, mixed with contributions from a few key Brit talents too – and the whole thing works together to showcase the sorts of sounds that were a bit inspiration on the generation that would then inspire many others to come – a mad mix of modern jazz, electronic music, avant classical, groovy vocal, and even some compelling beat/poetry recordings too – all packaged together in an overstuffed 3CD set that makes for a hell of a journey in music! Artists include Ornette Coleman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Mingus, Daphne Oram, Modern Jazz Quartet, Aldous Huxley, Cecil Taylor, John Cage, Eric Dolphy, Annie Ross, Sun Ra, Gyorgy Ligeti, Allen Ginsberg, Jimmy Smith, Luciano Berio, John Coltrane, Chico Hamilton, Alexis Korner, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Albert Ayler, Joe Harriott, and many others. One of the greatest records that Charlie Haden ever did, and a record that stands as sort of a bookend to his Liberation Music album on Impulse. As with that record, he's got a large group on here, and also like that one, he's playing a batch of tracks that have a definite political bent. Players include Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, Jim Pepper, and Michael Mantler; and tracks include "Ballad Of The Fallen", "Too Late", "La Pasionaria", and "The People United Will Never Be Defeated". The sound's a little bit less harsh than his Impulse recording, but it's no less impassioned, and the record's a very emotional batch of music. CD
