✨✧ Pieces Of A DreamImagine This ... LP
Elektra, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A smooth jazzy classic from Pieces Of A Dream – and a real standout from the early 80s scene! The core trio of Curtis Harmon on drums, James Lloyd on keys, and Cedric Napoleon on bass are produced by Grover Washington with a fuller feel than usual – taking the piano trio approach of earlier jazz years, and updating it nicely for the 80s groove sound! Washington plays a bit of sax on the set, but the main groove is still from the keys in the trio – sounding especially sweet on the album's wonderful version of Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me A Bedtime Story"! Other titles include "Imagine This", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "It's Time For Love", "Fo Fi Fo", and "It's Getting Hot In Here". LP, Vinyl record album

Pat Van DykeFalls To Pieces ... LP
Cotter, 2024. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
Funky jazz for the hip hop generation – a set that features warm instrumental solos over some well-crafted beats – all with a vibe that effortlessly links the 70s with the 21st Century! Pat Van Dyke plays a host of instruments – including vibes and Fender Rhodes – in a lineup that also features tenor and flute from Zac Colwell, and some guest tenor from Dayna Stephens too – both players who help enforce the jazz side of the spectrum here, amidst the spacious funky beats from the leader. Titles include "Slow Shimmer", "Vibrate Higher", "Falls To Pieces", "Rising Tide", "Say It Again", and "A Faded Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWelcome To Paradise – Italian Dream House 1990 to 1994 Vol 3 ... LP
Safe Trip (Netherlands), Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at this sometimes-missed chapter in Italian music – a moment when the Italo Club sound of the 80s had transformed into a scene that gave us some of the cleanest, leanest house music of the time! Earlier Italian imports had a big impact on the birth of house music in Chicago – and a few years later, those forward-thinking sounds were used to bring a needed revamp to Italian club as well – as you'll hear in these wonderfully-executed cuts that often have the best spare sounds of the US underground, mixed with some classic elements that warm things up in a mighty nice way! All volumes are filled with well-chosen cuts that never got the kind of attention they should have at the time – and titles on this third edition include "Illusion" by Optik, "Universal" by Leo Anibaldi, "Tramp Heart" by Green Baize, "Children Trip" by Deep Choice, "Deep Blue" by Deep Blue, "Walkin On The Moon" by Cosmic Galaxy, "Paranoia" by Golem, "Sweet Pieces (alt mix)" by Lonely Dance, "Ouverture" by Don Carlos, and "Dance To The House (unreleased edit)" by Neurostate. Stanley TurrentinePieces Of Dreams ... LP
Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A 70s soulful classic from the mighty Stanley Turrentine! Stan's not the bad "Mister T" on this set – he's more in a smooth, mellow mode – blowing over some nice soulful arrangements by Gene Page, ones that take the CTI funk approach, add in some strings, and create a bit of a Barry White sort of instrumental groove! The result is surprisingly great – a lot nicer than you might think – with plenty of slinky soulful numbers that have a subtle undercurrent of funk, and still feature some excellent and inventive blowing from Stan. Titles include "Midnight & You", "Blanket On The Beach", "I'm In Love", "Evil", "Pieces of Dreams", and "Deep In Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Quadradisc pressing in a gatefold cover, with light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Peggy LeeRaindrops ... LP
Capitol, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A hip collection of tracks from Peggy Lee – featuring tunes recorded for Capitol during the late 60s and early 70s, put together as a special package for Placidyl sleeping pills! The album's hardly sleepy, though – and the standout cut is Peggy's awesome version of "Spinning Wheel" – a monster groover that puts her in the company of Doris or Shirley Bassey, as the cut's got a fantastic break and a great groove throughout! We totally dig the other stuff, too – and titles include "Pieces Of Dreams", "Let's Get Lost In Now", "Two For The Road", "Watch What Happens", and "You'll Remember Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel LegrandConcert Legrand ... LP
BMG, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A haunting set from French soundtrack maestro Michel Legrand – an obscure album of orchestral tunes from the mid 70s, handled with a lot more strings than you'd usually hear in his work, but in a way that comes off sounding delightful! Legrand has a talent for making any kind of setting swing, and he certainly shows that in this set – a moodily concocted batch of tracks that fit perfectly with his best soundtrack work of the time. There's a slight bit of electricity in some of the tracks, and the album features solo work by Phil Woods on alto, Derek Watkins on trumpet, and Don Lusher on trombone. Titles include "Pieces Of Dreams", "Sweet Gingerbread Man", "Christine", "Wonder Where I'll Be Tomorrow", "The Saddest Thing Of All", and "Happy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nelson RiddleVive Legrand – Nelson Riddle Salutes Michel Legrand ... LP
Daybreak, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous stuff – an ultra-groovy 70s album from Nelson Riddle – with a sweet style that's very much like his two classics for MPS at the time! The songs are all Michel Legrand numbers – more than enough to entice our ears – and Riddle handles them with a nice mix of lush instrumentation and tighter rhythms – so that there's usually a nice gentle groove to the music, which works perfectly for Legrand's tunes! Titles include "Pieces Of Dreams", "I Will Wait For You", "Mon Amour", "Amy's Theme", "My Paris Friend", "Watch What Happens", and "Picasso Summer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineSugar Man ... LP
CTI, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from Stanley "Sugar Man" Turrentine – a nickname the reedman had at the time, given the success of his famous CTI Records version of "Sugar"! This set follows in that same great mode – jazzy, but a bit funky too – although couched with this gentle sense of soul that's perfect for that spacious style of soloing that Turrentine perfected over the years – a way of blowing openly, and without too much fuss – but managing to hit all the right notes along the way! There's a great glow to the whole record – an excellent easygoing sense of soul – and titles include an incredible reading of "Vera Cruz", done with Deodato on piano, and at a breakaway speed that's just great, and worth the price of the record alone! Other tracks feature piano by Harold Mabern or organ by Butch Cornell – and titles include "The Stretch", "Just As I Am", and "Pieces Of Dreams". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack JonesJack Jones Sings Michel Legrand ... LP
RCA, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Proof that Jack Jones is a much better singer than you might think! Forget hits like "Love Boat" or "Wives And Lovers", and check out a record like this – a wonderfully dark batch of tracks composed by French soundtrack genius Michel Legrand, recorded in Paris with arrangements and backings by Legrand himself! The record is one of the few English language albums to truly get the vocal interpretation of Legrand's work right – and it's got a depth of expression that you'd never expect to hear from Jones, a complicated approach to the tunes that's actually not that distant from a singer like Scott Walker (no surprise, as Walker always claimed that Jones was one of his biggest influences!) Titles include "One At A Time", "The Years Of My Youth", "Pieces Of Dreams", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", and "Blue Green Grey & Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousMasterpieces Of Modern Soul (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Ultra-hip soul from the 70s – a brilliant collection of underground tunes that represents some of the best of the decade's indie scene! The title says "modern", but the groove here is also pretty darn deep – as many of the tracks on the set have nice touches of southern soul, despite the smoother 70s production overall. Vocals are extremely heartfelt, and most tracks are in a mellow or midtempo pace – making for a really wonderful batch of tunes that moves away from the more uptempo and clubby sounds you might hear on other modern soul compilations. This special LP pressing brings together tracks from the CD series – a number of which were never issued on vinyl, even back in the day – and two unreleased tracks appear here for the first time ever! Titles include "Gotta Be Loved (part 2)" by Herman Davis, "Never Felt This Way Before" by The New Experience, "Go Away" by The Hestitations, "Momma Had A Baby" by Street People, "Do You Really Love Me" by Darondo, "I Don't Play Games" by Nightchill, "Just A Little Ugly" by Gail Anderson, "It's The Same Old Story" by Act 1, "Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right" by The Mayberry Movement, "Shake Off That Dream" by Eddie Billups & The CCCs, and "If There Were No You" by The Natural Resources. ✨✧ VariousComplete Obscure Records Collection (10LP set) ... LP
Obscure/Dialogo (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 10LPs ... Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to this groundbreaking, genre-busting label – a short-lived imprint on Island Records that was put together by Brian Eno in the mid 70s – all to showcase some of the best new experiments in avant classical and minimalist music! There's a special sort of quality to these records – work that maybe has a bit more "heart" than some of the colder, more academic work of the period – even in comparison to some of the other records issued by some of these artists – warmer and more personal than the productions of Cramps or CRI, for example – and always seeming to have that special sort of sonic brilliance that Eno brought to his own music of the time! The label only issued ten full records, but that makes for a very unified vibe for the entire catalog – which is collected here with a huge booklet of notes inside the box set. Albums include The Sinking Of The Titanic by Gavin Bryars, Voices & Instrumentals by Jan Steele & John Cage, Irma by Tom Phillips, Pavilion Of Dreams by Harold Budd, Decay Music by Michael Nyman, Discreet Music by Brian Eno, New & Rediscovered Musical Instruments by Max Eastley & David Toop, Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Machine Music by John White & Gavin Bryars, and Ensemble Pieces by Christopher Hobbs, John Adams, & Gavin Bryars. LP, Vinyl record album
(LP box has a tiny bump on two corners, and is priced accordingly – still is fantastic overall.)
