Jason Stein's Locksmith Isidore —
After Caroline ... LP NorthernSpy, 2018. Very Good+ ...
Just Sold Out!
Jason Stein is one of the few folks who can make a bass clarinet sound like a completely fierce instrument – a horn blown with the kind of frenzy and sonic power that most musicians would bring to a tenor – completely set free here in a fantastic trio with Jason Roebke on bass and Mike Pride on drums! Roebke's bass has this rock-solid, thoroughly rumbling vibe that really matches the tonal range of the bass clarinet – creating a massive bottom end to the record, which is only driven deeper by Pride's drums – except for those great moments when he gets a bit more open-ended on the percussive tip, and might well seem to be the lightest member in the group! Titles include "Walden's Thing", "Sternum", "26-2", "We Gone", "Eckhart Park", and "Ida Like". LP, Vinyl record album
Strong solo work from saxophonist Darius Jones – a set that really lives up to both the "raw" and the "lone operation" in the title – as Jones blows here in a space that's very much all his own – with raw emotionality in the spotlight all the way through! Yet the work also draws key inspiration from earlier giants – as many of the tunes are reworkings of older compositions, from artists who include Roscoe Mitchell, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, and Georgia Anne Muldrow – taken to very personal territory by the performance. There's a strong sense of space to the recording – one that reminds us of hearing Mitchell play solo in a cathedral many years back – and titles include "Nonaah", "Love In Outer Space", "Figure No 2", "Sadness", and "Beautiful Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black vinyl pressing. Includes obi and printed inner sleeve.)
A set of classic groovers from Dee Dee Sharp – cut during her early stretch at Cameo/Parkway, at a time when Dee Dee was one of the hardest hard soul singers on the Philly scene! As you'd guess from the title, most of the tracks here have an upbeat groove that's aimed at the dancefloor – that best side of romping Philly 60s soul that's had such an influence on the Northern scene over the years – sung with that raspy, hard-edge sound that some of the Philly singers had going on a lot more than others from Detroit or Chicago. Titles include "Mashed Potato Time", "Hurry On Down", "Gravy", "Eddie My Love", "Gee", "Be My Girl", and "Slow Twistin". LP, Vinyl record album
