McCoy Tyner's definitely "reaching forth" here – stretching past obvious piano trio modes, thanks to hip help from Henry Grimes on bass and Roy Haynes on drums! The groove is very open and freewheeling – yet all without being avant or outside – those hip modal-inspired sounds that you'd be likely to hear on some of Haynes' excellent early 60s sessions, cast here in beautiful tones and colors that show Tyner already stretching past the core sounds he was laying down with John Coltrane. Even the ballads have a nice sort of edge – as familiar numbers are recast in some darker clothing – and titles include the originals "Reaching Fourth" and "Blues Back" – plus versions of "Theme For Ernie", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Old Devil Moon", and "Goodbye". The only 2 trio sessions recorded by pianist and vibist Eddie Costa – both done in the late 50s, a few years before Eddie's untimely early death! The first 9 tracks on the CD feature work from the Eddie Costa/Vinnie Burke Trio album – a spare and sweet little set from the team of Costa and Burke – one of the best of the east coast chamber jazz pairings of the 50s! The duo's trio has Eddie on piano and vibes, Vinnie on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – all working together to craft light, rhythmic versions of tunes that really change them up rhythmically – working in the most playful mode of the time to freely create over the top of familiar numbers that include "Fascinating Rhythm", "It Could Happen To You", "Sweet & Lovely", "Yesterdays", and "Let's Do It". The set also features two nice originals – "Unison Blues" and "Pile Driver". House Of Blue Lights is a quite different record altogether – one that has Eddie playing with a much heavier touch on the left hand – inflecting the keys in a bluesier mode, but also working here with some modern touches from drummer Paul Motian, who's in the trio along with bassist Wendell Marshall. Costa's tone has changed decidedly for the record – and he's often got a loudly flowing approach to the keys that echoes later work by McCoy Tyner, Steve Kuhn, and other key 60s innovators. And even though tracks are again mostly familiar numbers, Costa's really pushing them to new levels – pushing, pausing, and twisting them into unusual time structures and melodic progressions. Titles include "House Of Blue Lights", "Diane", "When I Fall In Love", "My Funny Valentine", "What's To Ya", and "Anabelle". 15 tracks in all – 9 from the Costa/Burke Trio album, and 6 from Blue Lights. Top shelf jazz trio from pianist Jon Davis – an artist who might look pretty laidback, sipping wine on the cover – but who serves up some great original material as well as key takes on some classics! Working with bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Mark Ferber on this one, Davis earnestly sets out to pay homage to the 60s modern piano jazz genius of his five favorite players – and also manages to really show some of his own best work – a really impressive feat! The originals shine brightly – including "Happy Juice", "Slant Six", "As We Know", "Bred On Read" and "Mostly Minor" – and fit in seamlessly with the nods to classics by Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett – including "The Two Lonely People", "Tones For Joans Bones", "Speak Like A Child", "Search For People" and "Rainbow". 2 great 60s sessions from Duke Ellington – both with a key tenorist! First up is Duke Ellington & Coleman Hawkins – the meeting of two classic talents late in their careers – in a setting that's ideal to bring out all the complexity of their well-honed genius! The approach of the album is mostly an Ellington one – as the group features some of Duke's stalwarts, like Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, and Aaron Bell – but Coleman Hawkins gets plenty of space as the main soloist on each number, alongside Duke, who also solos strongly on piano! A warm and soulful set of tracks by John Hicks – a wonderful album that moves past his more familiar trio modes, and shows how great he can sound with some horn players in the mix! The lineup here is wonderful – with a core combo that features Curtis Lundy's bass and Cecil Brooks' drums – joined by a shifting assortment of reeds handled by Bobby Watson on alto, Vincent Herring on tenor, and Elise Wood on flute! There's a lot of Watson-like energy on the record, but the album's also clearly Hicks' genius too – as he's at the height of his powers, crafting post-McCoy Tyner type blocks of modal sound, shifting mood and color effortlessly – perfectly matched by the always strong bass playing of Lundy. Titles include "Faith", "Piece For My Peace", "So In Love", "Don't Let It Go", and "Diane". CD

Brilliant work from one of our favorite Japanese jazz artists of the 70s – and a warmly soulful batch of acoustic tunes from pianist Takehiro Honda! The sound here is much more far-reaching and exploratory than most of Honda's other work – a bit in a McCoy Tyner, post-Coltrane mode – with bold lines on the piano that spiral out in a really searching sort of way – and the album only features three long tracks, all of them great and very vibrant. The trio here features bassist Junie Booth and drummer Eric Gravatt – who give the record a lot of spiritual undercurrents – and titles include "Salaam Salaam", "Minors Only", and "Natural Tranquility". A real burner from Freddie Hubbard's early years at Blue Note – filled with rich hues, colors, and tones! The group's a quintet – supported by lyrical rhythms from the trio of McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – working alongside Freddie's trumpet and the tenor of Hank Mobley – to craft tunes that sparkle with slight exotic touches, and which offer the perfect blend of modern and soulful that Blue Note was cutting in the early 60s! Early 80s trio material from pianist Fumio Karashima – a splendid set of extended original compositions, played with a sense of grace and majesty that few other players can match! The trio on the set is beautifully balanced – with regular member George Ohtsuka on drums and guest player Richard Davis on bass – all working together as one unit to paint magical pictures of sound over the structure of Karashima's originals "Child In The Wind", "Cycle Of Time", "His Mother", and "Portrait". As always, there's a wonderfully evocative sound to Fumio's piano – a boldness that might be traced back to McCoy Tyner, but also a sense of space and placement that's more European in origin. Really great stuff – and one of the best albums ever by this wonderful player! CD
