✨✧ Billy TaylorMidnight Piano ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A really great album from Billy Taylor – way fresher than most of his other records of the time, especially his trio work! The main reason for this is Oliver Nelson – who crafts some incredibly soulful backings for Billy on the album's tracks, twisting through soul jazz big band numbers, easily grooving mellow tracks, all in the style of some of his best backing work for other players of the time. Billy's freed up to let himself groove around the tracks with an easy floating tone – almost like Ahmad Jamal or Ramsey Lewis on some of their sessions with Richard Evans. Titles include "You Tempt Me", "Don't Ever Say We're Through", "Love For Sale", "Miss Fine", "A Secret", "My Romance", and "Midnight Piano". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover is great!)

✨✧ John Coltrane, Idrees Sulieman, Bobby Jaspar, etcInterplay For 2 Trumpets & 2 Tenors ... LP
Prestige, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
2 trumpets, 2 tenors, and a heck of a lot of open-ended blowing session magic! The format for this one's incredibly loose – as might be guessed by the "leaderless" nature of the record – but the session's a great example of the Prestige blowing session mode at its best – as it brings together unlikely groupmates, and really lets them feel each other out in the studio. On tenor, John Coltrane's deeper sound is matched with lightness of Bobby Jaspar's tone – and on trumpet, blowing session regular Webster Lewis and Idrees Sulieman show their talents at working strongly in a less-fettered format. The rest of the group includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Mal Waldron on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and the album's 4 tracks are all nice and long – and include "Interplay", "Anatomy", "Light Blue", & "Soul Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow and black label NYC 50th street pressing with deep groove and RVG stamp! Back cover has light aging, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ JJ Johnson, Kai Winding, Bennie Green, Willie DennFour Trombones – The Debut Recordings ... LP
Debut/Prestige, 1953. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Groundbreaking work in the field of jazz trombone – a unique 4 trombone session that features the talents of JJ Johnson, Kai Winding, Benny Green, and Willie Dennis – all set to rhythm by the trio of John Lewis on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Art Taylor on drums! The players all get plenty of room to solo – stretching out nicely on the tracks, and resisting the popular multi-trombone style of ensemble work of the time. The CD features 8 tracks in all – material that was originally released on a two-volume series of 10" albums – titled 4 Trombones. Tracks include "Stardust", "Move", "I'll Remember April", "Trombonosophere", "Ow", "Chazzanova", and "Now's The Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ZZ HillLet's Make A Deal ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from the great ZZ Hill – a set that has the singer making a brief appearance on Columbia Records, and working with the mighty Bert DeCoteaux in the process! Bert brings this full, rich style to bear alongside ZZ's vocals – an approach that's still quite respectful to Hill's deep soul roots, but which also creates this whole new setting for his voice – a bit like the shift that Tyrone Davis and Johnnie Taylor were making at Columbia at the time – and with similar great results! The choice of material is great – as the record features songs penned by indie soul great Jimmy Lewis, Fredrick Knight, Harvey Scales, and ZZ himself – and titles include "Let's Make A Deal", "Message To The Ladies", "Universal Love", and "Near But Yet So Far". LP, Vinyl record album

Debut, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Volume 2 of this hard to find early side on the legendary Debut label – a unique 4 trombone session originally issued on 10"s featuring JJ Johnson, Kai Winding, Benny Green, and Willie Dennis – with an all star rhythm section of John Lewis on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Art Taylor on drums! Though there's some ensemble lines in the heads, the horn players get lots of room to do their own thing too, taking turns soloing on long takes of "Now's The Time", "Trombosphere", "Ow" and "Chazzanova".
