Not "blues" like you might expect from the title – but a hip batch of tracks that has guitarist Kenny Burrell soloing over these great large arrangements by Don Sebesky – playing in a warmly chromatic mode that's similar to the work that Wes Montgomery also cut with Sebesky, but with that special sense of rasp and color that's Kenny's own! The set was produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment from Reggie Johnson on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Following in the gentle spirit of the set, Kenny even plays an acoustic guitar on 2 numbers – making for a very different sound than usual. Obscure work from Kenny Burrell – material originally issued by Muse Records, most of it with a very laidback feel – as you'd guess from the title! The original sides were produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment on bass and drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Kenny only really cut 2 LPs for Columbia at the time – the instrumental album Blusin Around, and the stranger set Weaver Of Dreams, which actually features Kenny on vocals (one of his few albums of the sort.) The set here resurrects Kenny's Columbia work as a musician – by compiling tracks from the Blusin Around album, plus 9 more titles that have never been issued before, but were recorded at the time! A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title!
