Cassandra WilsonBelly Of The Sun ... CD
Blue Note, 2002. Used ... $2.99
A laidback, and almost rootsy effort from Cassandra Wilson – recorded with small combo backing, and still handled in the sweetly swinging style of her other Blue Note work – but also with some folksy touches that create a more intimate feel on the record than you might think. Of course, part of the reason for that is that a few of the tunes on the set are classic blues numbers – handled by Wilson in an updated style that has kind of a fake authentic quality to it. We still prefer her on the smoother jazzier sides of the set – like the album's great remake of Jobim's "Waters Of March", or the mellow tune "Only A Dream In Rio". Other tracks include "Road So Clear", "Hot Tamales", "Show Me A Love", 'Drunk A Cooter Brown", "Wichita Lineman", "The Weight", and "Justice". CD

✨✧ Gary BurtonLofty Fake Anagram/Genuine Tong Funeral ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Great work from vibist Gary Burton – two RCA albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Lofty Fake Anagram – a standout classic from Burton, and the kind of fresh-voiced and angularly modern session that showed why his sound on the vibes was one of the most revolutionary in jazz at the time! The session features a quartet with Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – all working in a style that's got touches of modal jazz, and fragments of the Walt Dickerson sound – yet which is also a bit looser, freer, and more spacious – all without going too far "out". Titles include "Lines", "I'm Your Pal", "Fleurette Africaine", "Feelings & Things", "June The 15th, 1967", and "Good Citizen Swallow". Next up is Genuine Tong Funeral – billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words", an extended piece written by Carla Bley, and performed by the Burton quartet with help from a larger group that includes Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri, Michael Mantler, and Bley herself. As such, the album's probably the most ambitious one that Burton ever recorded during the 60s – never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from his other sides for RCA. It also makes it one of his best, too – as the record has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley, never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". CD

✨✧ VariousDore LA Soul Sides ... CD
Dore/Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of soul from the legendary LA indie label Dore Records – home to some of the finest 60s sides on the west coast – a top-shelf lineup that's never been represented this well! Dore had a few key groups at the time – a young Whispers, and the excellent Superbs – but also cut work by some other great artists too – all with a level of care and class to match the best soul sides coming from New York or Detroit at the time! The Dore approach manages to have a sparkle without losing any sort of edge – careful production and instrumentation, but a real respect for the voices in the lead, too. This style works especially well with groups – as you'll hear on the set – but also graces some great cuts by single singers, too – in a lineup that includes "Doctor Love" by The Whispers, "Where There's A Will There's A Way" by Eddie Kool, "Baby's Gone Away" by The Superbs, "Do It Right Now" by The Entertainers IV, "Your Ship Of Fools" by Ray Marchand, "My Lonely Feeling" by Milton James, "The Winds Kept Laughing" by Betty Turner & The Chevelles, "You Really Never Know Till It's Over" by The Vel-Vetts, "Gone With The Wind Is My Love" by Rita & The Tiaras, "Do The Skin" by Kenard Gardner, "Oh How I Love You" by Little Johnny Hamilton & The Creators, and "Hold Back The Dawn" by Frances Lark. ✨✧ VariousServe Chilled – 28 Pure Chilled Out Grooves ... CD
Hed Kandi (UK), 1999. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful grooves for the after-set crowd! This sparkling 2CD set features a perfect blend of mellow club tracks – all taken at a nice easy pace, with plenty of warm keyboard washes, slow funky beats, and snakey groovy instrumentation popping up at the best points in the mix. The selection's a well-chosen trip through underground sides, obscure remixes, and hard to find album sides – all tied together nicely with a good dose of soul, and a strong flair for presentation. Includes "Moon Sequence" by The Herbalizer, "Glass Bead Game" by Thievery Corp, "Resist" by Outside, "Les Nuits" by Nightmares on Wax, "Lizzie's Balloon" by 45 Dip, "Silvia" by Fourth World, "Beyond My Imagination" by Jazz Vandals, "With You" by Smoke City, "Sem Contencao" by Bebel Gilberto, "Cry" by Afterlife, "Who Do You Love?" by Jose Padilla, and "Marching On" by Ballistic Brothers. Loads more – and a great vibe throughout! CD

✨✧ Dr JohnIn The Right Place ... CD
Atco (Japan), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, funkiest records we've ever heard from Dr John – thanks to lots of guest help from The Meters! The vibe here is a bit tighter than some of Mac's previous records – not as trippy as his first few for Atco – but the sound is still nice and sharp, and Allen Toussaint provides production and arrangements with a style that would be right at home on some of his work for the indie Sansu label. The title cut – "Right Place Wrong Time" – was a huge hit, but has a great funky break – and the album also features loads of other nice numbers too – including "Life", "Traveling Mood", "Same Old Same Old", "Just The Same", and "Shoo Fly Marches On". ✨✧ Albert AylerAlbert Ayler In Greenwich Village ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching In". CD
(Out of print. Note: CD is missing back artwork in case – and is priced accordingly.)

✨✧ Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral ... CD
RCA (Germany), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. ✨✧ Ted CursonSugar N Spice ... CD
Level Green, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ted Curson's one of those jazz players who always sounds great, no matter what the date – and this late 90s session is key proof of that fact! Curson's captured here in the company of pianist Michael Cochrane, guitarist Lenny Argese, bassist Calvin Hill, and drummer Bruce Cox – a straight group, but a soulful one who provides Ted with a strongly sympathetic vibe for his rich lines on trumpet – played, perhaps, with a bit of age here, but still all the creative imagination we've come to love in his music over the years. Curson's tone is quite brash at points, but never too outside – and titles include "Sugar N Spice", "Playhouse March", "Jordu", "Summertime", "Marjo", "Georgia", "Dig", and "Tin Tin Deo". CD

✨✧ Blue MitchellBlue Mitchell Big 6 ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Blue in the main style of his early years at Riverside – working in an all-star group (the "Big 6" in the title), with players that include Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones. Blue's leadership isn't that strong – but fortunately, the others (particularly Griffin, Ware, and Jones) gel together strongly with or without him, making the set crackle with the soulful energy of some of the best Jazzland/Riverside hardbop sides from the time. Tracks include "Sir John", "Blues March", "Big Six", and "Jamph". CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsThings To Come From Those Now Gone ... CD
Delmark, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous step forward for the young Muhal Richard Abrams – a set that still shows his early roots in the AACM, but which also blossoms with some of his more serious compositional efforts to come! There's a sensitivity here that really stands out – even among Abrams' contemporaries – a striving for a wider range of expression – some as bold as before, some much more deeply personal and intimate. The tracks feature a shifting array of players – working alongside Abrams piano, and building up the sound in a number of different ways. Players include Wallace McMillan on flute and sax, Edwin Daugherty on sax, Richard Brown on sax, Emanuel Cranshaw on vibes, Rufus Reid on bass, and Steve McCall and Wilbur Campbell on drums. Ella Jackson provides vocals on "How Are You?" – and other titles include "Ballad For New Souls", "Things To Come From Those Now Gone", "In Retrospect", "Ballad For Old Souls", "1 & 4 Plus 2 & 7", and "March Of The Transients". A nice collection of hard bop sides cut by Blue Mitchell in the late 50s for Riverside, taken from the albums "Big Six", "Out Of The Blue", and "Blue Soul". All selections on here are recorded with an all-star personnel – including his Big Six band with Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones; his quintet with Benny Golson, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey; and a later sextet with Jimmy Heath, and Sam Jones. ✨✧ Albert AylerNuits De La Fondation Maeght 1970 ... CD
Shandar/Water, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic late work from Ayler! The record is one of the last he ever recorded – and it's a no-nonsense live set, without any of the silly influences of some of his late Impulse sides. Most of the material features Ayler blowing long free solos, with a tightness and directness missing from mid 60s sessions. Cal Cobbs is on piano, Steve Tintweiss is on bass, Allen Blairman is on drums, and Mary Maria plays a bit of soprano sax, and sings vocals on "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe", done here in a fantastically soulful version! Other tracks include "Holy Family", "Truth Is Marching", "Universal Message", "Spiritual Reunion", and "In Heart Only". CD

✨✧ Stacey KentDreamer In Concert (with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great setting for Stacey Kent – one of the most lovely vocalists to emerge in recent years – heard here in a live performance that's almost got more charm than her previous studio albums for Blue Note! The space is large, but the group is nice and small – an intimate lineup that features guitar from Kent alongside the vocals, tenor and soprano sax from Jim Tomlinson, Fender Rhodes and piano from Graham Harvey, bass from Jeremy Brown, and drums from Matt Skelton – a lineup that provides perfect gentle backings for Stacey's unique way of singing – a light-voiced mode that almost feels like Blossom Dearie at times! Titles include "Waters Of March", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", "Breakfast On The Morning Tram", "O Comboio", "Dreamer", "Jardin D'Hiver", "Samba Saravah", and "Ces Petits Riens". CD features the bonus track "They Say It's Wonderful". CD
