Steve LacySteve Lacy – The Ictus Archives Vol 1 ... LP
Ictus (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $29.99 33.99
Never-heard music from the great Steve Lacy – material recorded during the time of his Ictus Records album Clangs, but not issued on vinyl until this set! Volume one has Lacy doing all sorts of incredible improvisations on soprano sax, often in the company of percussionist Andre Centazzo – a musician who always seems to be at his best when in the company of Lacy, really spurred on to some creative approaches to the drums that match Steve's boundless imagination on his horn! The performances are often quite tuneful, even if their structure is loose – and titles include "Figment", "Coastline", "Swab", "Hooky", and "The Duck" LP, Vinyl record album

Steve LacySteve Lacy – The Ictus Archives Vol 2 ... LP
Ictus (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $29.99 33.99
A second great set of work from improvising genius Steve Lacy – working here in both solo formation, and in a trio with Andrea Centazzo on drums and Kent Carter on bass – all on material recorded by the Ictus label in the 70s, but unissued at the time! The solo pieces are beautiful – very much on a par with some of Lacy's better-known recordings in that mode at the time, but maybe also more lyrical too – and the trio improvisation gets nicely unbounded, with all three players really pushing themselves in pursuit of new sonic ideas! Titles include "Name", "The Way", and "Bone". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul BleyPaul Bley Plays Carla Bley (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1992. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of Carla Bley is always a special thing – compositions that began appearing on modern jazz recordings long before Carla herself got a chance to record as a leader – yet there's also maybe something extra special about this set, as Paul Bley really gets all the special sense of spacing and tone in the tunes completely right – delivered here in a record that's very different than most of his other albums from the time! The other trio members have ears that fit the songs perfectly too – Marc Johnson on bass and Jeff Williams on drums – working with Paul's piano in this special sonic space that's completely sublime, on titles that include "Turns", "Ictus", "Ida Lupino", "Vashkar", "Seven", "Around Again", and "Olhos De Gato". Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva (Brazil), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lamont DozierLove & Beauty (white vinyl pressing – with bonus LP) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Invictus/Demon, 1975. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive album by Lamont Dozier – probably his best ever! Every cut's a winner, and the LP shines with a sharpness and tightness that's missing from some of Lamont's other LPs from the 70s. The songwriting is impeccable – and as the album progresses, you get that eerie "deja vu" feeling you can have when discovering a landmark work for the first time. There's a hint of funk in the mix, but the strongest point is the production – which bowls over the top with a mix of strings, piano, and Lamont's wonderfully honest vocals. Includes the wonderful soul anthem "Don't Leave Me", which comes up again in a very tight instrumental version – plus the tracks "The Picture Will Never Change", "Why Can't We Be Lovers", and "Slipping Away". Great all the way through, and a stunning bit of seventies soul that will have you returning again and again! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ParliamentOsmium (with bonus tracks) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insane bit of fuzzed-out funk! This is Parliament's rare first album – a trippy batch of tunes that come off of Clinton's experimentation in the Detroit soul scene, infused by the rock-heavy energy of the city at the time, and probably a heck of a lot of cannabis, too! The record is quite different than the slick funky sound of the group's later work for Casablanca – and has the psychedelic funk sound of the early work of Funkadelic, which was also recorded during the same period. The album's filled with funky classics – including "I Call My Baby Pussycat", "Little Ole Country Boy", "My Automobile", "Funky Woman", and "Nothing Before Me But Thang". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Electric Prunes (with David Axelrod)Mass In F Minor (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Reprise/Jackpot, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautifully baroque batch of tracks, written and arranged for the Electric Prunes by the great David Axelrod – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that had quite an impact back in the late 60s! The record shows Axelrod's perpetual fascination with the spiritual – mixed with that great modern style of funk that he was forging at Capitol during the late 60s. The record's not really preachy, nor is it proggy. It's more of a complex blueprint of rock, jazz, funk, and touches of soul – all hung together on the same sort of "mass" structure that Axelrod would later use with Cannonball and on his own. Titles include "Kyrie Eleison", "Gloria", "Benedictus", and "Sanctus". LP, Vinyl record album
