Rootsy rock – but of a sort that we like a lot more than most! Marc Benno's working here in a style that others explored often at the time, but he's got a way of doing so that's pretty compelling to our ears – a mode that mixes some of the countrified undercurrents with a hipper, almost jazzier singer/songwriter mode – so that the bottleneck guitar of Ry Cooder is undercut with organ and piano from Booker T Jones – and the sound's a nice sort of LA hybrid that's neither too down home, nor too slick on the top. Young lion jazz from a great little combo – one headed up by pianist Marc Cary, and featuring Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Ron Blake on tenor, and Yarborough Charles Laws on flute! The record's got the positive, forward-thinking sound you'd guess from the players – a great mix of entitled optimism with some nice undercurrents of darkness – really showing this generation of players on the cusp of their maturing talents! The horn work from Blake and Hargrove is especially nice – full of soulful colors that really make the record sparkle – and other players include Dwayne Burno on bass, Dion Parson on drums, and Charlene Fitzpatrick on a bit of vocals. One of the most fantastic records we've heard from bassist Marc Johnson in years – a wonderful solo set that not only furthers Johnson's legacy as a musician, but also ties it to the larger ECM Records tradition – but without having Marc just swim in the same waters as his labelmates! Johnson's bass sounds very different here – a sense of tone that's very low and moody – which is obvious, for a bass, but with a very particular quality that sets the record apart from other efforts of this nature – as does some of the material on the set, which features a few well-chosen remakes that link Johnson's experiments with a longer history of jazz. These include versions of "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Nardis", and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – alongside other tunes that include "Yin & Yang", "Samurai Fly", "Life Of Pai", and "And Strike Each Tuneful String". A crucial bit of keyboard funk from the 70s – a wild album of many moods, recorded in 1974, and featuring the talents of keyboard whiz Marc Moulin! Moulin's since been resurrected and given the credit he deserves – but at the time of release, this rare gem was somewhat lost – caught underneath the weight of more famous work by players like Herbie Hancock or George Duke. The album's got a jazzy groove in parts – and in others it's got a totally stripped down feel, and sounds a lot like a lost David Axelrod album, or a rare Herbie Hancock Japanese session. Includes the totally excellent 17 minute cut "Tohubohu", plus goodies like "La Blouse", "La Bougie", and "From". CD

Two great tracks from Carlo Pes – who you might know from his work in the group I Marc 4, and who really makes things great here through a range of cool, jazzy instrumentation! "The Riff" is way more than you'd guess from the title – as it begins with this fast and echoey drum break that's totally great – psychedelic funk at its best, peppered with all sorts of cool organ bits! "Bossa Party" is light and jazzy – maybe more Italian jazz of the late 60s than straight bossa, but with some mighty nice piano and percussion! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A very cool little album from Placebo – arguably the group's most soulful session ever, and one that draws heavily from American funky jazz at the start of the 70s! The grooves are nice and tight, and keyboards are focused on the most soulful sort of riffs – not nearly as tripped out as in later years, and really doing a great job of sending home the funky rhythms – almost in a way that's sort of early CTI at the best points! Marc Moulin's genius is already firmly in place – and he handles all arrangements, plus plays Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and even what sounds like a bit of moog! Titles include "Humpty Dumpty", "Aria", "Showbiz Suite", "Ball Of Eyes", "You Got Me Hummin", and "Inner City Blues". CD

Seminal sounds from Placebo – one of the hippest electric groups going on the European scene of the early 70s, thanks to some great keyboards and electronics from the legendary Marc Moulin! Placebo's sound here is a unique approach to funky jazz – one that certainly draws from the electric modes of the American scene, and without any of the jamming elements of other Euro fusion groups – but there's also a touch of rockish inflection at points too – especially in the way the rhythms have a tightly pulsating groove. There's none of the indulgence of prog, but there's definitely a lineage going on somewhere in the mix too – and in addition to Moulin's keyboards, the group also features great horns from Nick Fissette, Alex Socrier, and Richard Rousselet. Titles include "Bolkwush", "Temse", "Balek", "Phalene", "Re-Union", and "Only Nineteen". CD

Great contemporary soul from Marc Staggers – a singer who really takes us back to some of our favorite mellow soul singers of the 70s! Like some of our favorites, Staggers sounds especially great when hitting a midtempo groove – kind of a smooth stepping style that has the rhythms tripping along nicely while his rich vocals really take off over the top! Nothing's ever overdone or forced – and like a small range of true talents in this area, Marc's got a way of keeping things understated at all the right moments – while still making us really feel his vibe. Titles include "Partner For Life", "Bring Me Back", "Be My Girl", "So Amazing", "I Wanna Spend My Life With You", and "I Like The Way". CD

One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Titles include "Geistige Nacht", "A Modern Lesson", "Palmiers En Pots", "Inoculating Rabies", "Cinema", and "Bosses De Crosses". CD

The last-ever Chet Baker recording with a quartet – and a set that shows just how completely magical the legendary trumpeter was even up to the end! Chet at this time is completely different than Chet in the 50s or 60s – as he'd really found a way to make all these amazing new sounds on his horn, partly as a way of getting around some of his physical limitations, but also as a way of opening up some of those mid 60s ideas that he barely explored on record at the time. He's working here with a very important musical partner from the last decade – getting great help on guitar and flute from Nicola Stilo – plus Marc Abrams on bass and Luca Flores on piano – on titles that include "Portrait In Black & White", "Funk In Deep Freeze", "Arborway", "In A Sentimental Way", and "If I Should Lose You". That's no snake oil in the bottle, it's fantastic music from this razor-sharp quintet – maybe one of the most fantastic projects that saxophonist Tim Berne has given us in many years, and a group that just seem to get better and better with each new record! There's a combination of reed and percussive elements here that's really wonderful – alto from the leader, bass clarinet from Oscar Noriega, piano and tack piano from Matt Mitchell, and drums, vibes, gongs, tanbou, and glockenspiel from Ches Smith – all then strung together by guitar work from Marc Ducret, whose range of sounds really matches those of the other players! Mitchell also adds in a bit of modular synth – and titles include "Surface Noise", "Rolo", "Dear Friend", "The Amazing Mr 7", "Third Option", "Rose Colored Assive", and "The Fantastic Mrs 10". CD

The film soundtrack version of this famous 60s musical, which was based around the sounds of Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The film version shares many similarities to the broadway one – translations by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, vocals by Shuman and Elly Stone – but the overall sound is quite different, as the versions presented here are more subtle, less campy, possibly due to the freer range of expression allowed to the actors on a film soundstage. Plus, this version also includes a few of Brel's best songs that were left out of the original show – making for a total of 26 titles that include "The Bulls", "Sons Of", "The Desperate Ones", "Amsterdam", "The Statue", "Brussels", "Funeral Tango", "Bachelors Dance", "Carousel", and "Next". If you want Brel in English, this may well be the best way to get it – as nearly all other English language versions of his work (by Scott Walker, Marc Almond, and others) came from these translations. A beautiful love letter from Dee Dee Bridgewater to her adopted home of Paris – sung in French, and with a feel that's quite different than much of her recent work! The style here wonderfully mixes together bits of jazz and more traditional chanson – in a style that recalls some of the recent work by Claude Nougaro, but which also has traces of some of Dee Dee's more intimate work as well. Marc Berthoumieux plays accordion on a number of tunes on the set, and Ira Coleman contributes some warmly soulful basslines that give the session a nice bottom grounding – especially on the mellower tunes. Titles include "Mon Homme", "Et Maintenant", "La Belle Vie", "Dansez Sur Moi", "Avec Le Temps", "Les Feuilles Mortes", and "Ne Me Quitte Pas" – plus the Japanese exclusive bonus track "L'Hymne A L'Amour". Drummer Kenny Clarke was one of the key American players to make the move overseas in the postwar years, which resulted in some excellent recordings from the late 50s onward – a trend that's continued here as Kenny plays with a number of key overseas musicians – including Maurice Vander on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, Roger Guerin on trumpet, and Marc Fosset on guitar – on titles that also feature some tenor from Bob Garcia, and piano from Walter Davis Jr on one track too. Serge plays here with Pierre Verne on bass and Jean Marc Lajudie on drums – both artists who really know how to vary their tones and timing in relation to the leader – which lets the trio really take off in all these really beautiful ways – especially given the special sonic treatment of the set, which is in the best Sawano label mode! One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". The name, and the title, give the whole game away – as Eliane performs a set of older Brazilian tunes, all in that wonderful light-hearted style of hers! About half the tracks feature Eliane on vocals, the rest just piano – working with players that include Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Marc Johnson, Oscar Castro-Neves, and Nana Vasconcelos. The overall style is a bit bossa, a bit MPB – but overall, mostly jazz-based – as Eliane uses older standards like "Chega De Saudade", "Passarim", "Waters Of March", "Garota De Ipanema", and "Cravo E Canela" to work out some warm and jazzy stylings. The tracks are collected from older albums, but come together very nicely as a unified set! CD
