Not vocals, but a very cool instrumental set from guitarist GlenCampbell – done along the lines of some of his uncredited session work of the time! Includes drums from Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer, too! LP, Vinyl record album
The set has a cover proclaiming that the set is "a new musical path" – and producer Jimmy Bowen works with bigger backings from Larry Muhuberac to use soaring strings next to the acoustic core, in ways that push Glen into some of the more soulful expressions he had to offer. The approach is a bit hard to describe, but it's different both from country roots, and from Jimmy Webb territory – that majestic GlenCampbell sound rising up nicely – on tunes that include "One Last Time", "I Will Never Pass This Way Again", "Sweet Fantasy", "Running Scared", "Just For What I Am", and "The Last Thing On My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album
Glen returns to work with Jimmy Webb – the brilliant songwriter who gave Glen big hits with "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" and "Witchita Lineman" back in the 60s. By the time of this 1974 recording, Jimmy had been through a lot of life – and was actually writing songs that were even more honest and gripping than in earlier years. He'd also become a heck of an arranger – and even though that work was often lost on Jimmy's own albums, mostly because Jimmy wasn't much of a singer, it sounds great here, as Glen's vocals really open up Jimmy's songs like few other singers could manage at the time! Titles include "Just This One Time", "Ocean In His Eyes", "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress", "Adoration", "It's A Sin", "I Keep It Hid", and "You Might As Well Smile". A brilliant record – the kind of underground major label gem that makes you realize that the 70s wasn't such a bad time! LP, Vinyl record album
Has there ever been a pop tune as sublime as "Wichita Lineman"? We don't think so – and Glen's original version is still the best that's ever been recorded! That track kicks off a great set that includes some other wonderful pop covers – like "If You Go Away", "Words", "You Better Sit Down", and Tim Hardin's always-great "Reason To Believe" – plus Glen's beautiful ode to daytime melancholia, "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife". Raucous drag strip rockers and driving R&B-fueled instrumentals by The T-Bones – killer material on Liberty from a group of young session wizards – including Hal Blaine, GlenCampbell, Leon Russell, Dave Pell, Steve Douglas and others! It's wildly fun stuff that goes all in with the drag strip novelty – but totally transcends it – with some rubber-burning, rumbling excellence! Killer guitars, sax, organ drums from a one-time relatively anonymous cast of players. Includes "Hey Little Cobra", "Shut Down", "Drag City", "Draggin'", "Scorchin", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Boss Drag" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing! Cover has some very light wear near the bottom, but this is a great copy.)
An incredibly groovy record from the LA scene of the 60s – part of a trio of cool Capitol sets with cover art by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth – all put together by studio genius Gary Usher! The tunes here are all originals – jaunty numbers with a definite hot rod vibe, but with a groove that's even hipper than usual – kind of a swinging soundtrack sort of approach, especially on the ultra-catchy vocals! Usher sings leads with Dick Burns – and the combo features GlenCampbell and Billy Strange on guitars, Ernie Freeman on piano, Carol Kaye on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums – all making for a rock-solid approach to the music. Titles include "The Lonely Stocker", "Three Kats In A Tub", "Hey Rat Fink", "1947 Avanti", "The Waltz Of The Rat Finks", and "The Ballad Of Effin Fink". LP, Vinyl record album

American grooves go Kingston – as the set features a wonderful assortment of funk and soul classics, all delivered here in reggae-styled versions! The approach is similar to the material featured in the older Reggae Disco collection from Soul Jazz – but the mix of modes here is much more expansive – so that you'll get some cuts that are very heavy in a New York clubby groove, while others are much more Jamaican in approach – and have an American soul tune bending down towards more reggae-oriented territory. As always with Soul Jazz, the choice of cuts is wonderful – and includes "Move On Up" by Devon Russell, "Caught You In A Lie" by Derrick Harriott, "Young Hearts Run Free" by Hortense Ellis, "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" by Ed Watson & Brass Circle, "For The Love Of You" by Bill Campbell, "Flight To Jamaica" by Crashers, "Fool's Paradise" by Valerie Harrison, "Reasons" by Seventh Extension, "Don't Let Love Get You Down" by Pete Campbell & The Sunshine Girls, "In The Rain" by Webby Jay, and "Just A Groove" by Glen Adams Affair. LP, Vinyl record album
Apart from the title's terrible pun on the Glenn Campbell hit of the mid 70s, this album's a real treat – a very soulful batch of smooth funky jazz tunes by The Crusaders, who by this point have fully emerged to claim the throne of the pop soul jazz genre they virtually invented. The record's got razor-sharp production, which you'll hear perfectly in the album's jazz stepping hit "Keep That Same Old Feeling", one of the best tunes ever to come from the pen of Wayne Henderson, and a track that he recorded endlessly with other groups. Other tracks include "Feeling Funky", "Spiral", and "Til The Sun Shines". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has a cut corner and an unglued seam.)
