James BrownLive At The Apollo Volume II ... LP
King, 1968. Good 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
James Brown's great second album recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem – a set we like even better than the first famous volume – because it's much more stretched-out, harder-hitting, and full of fire! You'd be hard pressed to find a better example of Brown's showmanship on record – as James urges the band through these triple-time takes on some of his classics, and turns in some amazing work in the process! The set includes a killer long version of "There Was A Time" – almost the blueprint of the James Brown funk sound to come – and other titles include "Bring It Up", "Let Yourself Go", and a wonderful duet version of "Think" – plus "Prisoner Of Love", "Out Of Sight", "Try Me", "It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World", "Lost Someone","Thanks", "Cold Sweat", "I Feel Alright", and "Please, Please, Please". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label King pressing. Cover has a small split on the top seam and light surface wear.)

Obe, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 25.99
These guys are known by some as the backing band of Anderson.Paak, but they're a hell of a group on their own – rock-solid right at the core, and able to effortlessly craft a sweet blend of funk and soul – yet also leave room for plenty of guests along the way! The musicianship here is fantastic – classic, yet very much their own – echoing the perfection of 70s studio work, but with a very contemporary vibe and a nicely up-close spirit –a sound that's perfect all the way through, and which makes a great accompaniment to guest work from TI, Shafiq Husayn, Daniel Caesar, Syd, Benny Sings, T Nava, Callum Connor, Conway, Westside Gunn, and even Anderson.Paak. The kind of record that's perfect for bumpin all summer long – with titles that include "Gidget", "Rene", "Shibuya", "Eternal Light", "The Rivington", "Beauty & Essex", and "On Sight". ✨✧ Jeffery Scott GreerSchematics For A Blank Stare Vol 1 ... LP
Funk Night, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jeffery Scott Greer has given us some great funk singles in recent years – those expensive funky 45s that can sometimes cost more than a full length album – which is why we're so happy to have this record on hand! Greer can be a one-man band at times, but here he works with help from some other musicians too – although mostly serves things up with his own instrumentation on funky drums, Fender Rhodes, organ, moog, congas, and even flute – the last of which Greer plays with a slinky, soulful quality that's really outta sight! Titles include "Bumpy Rhodes", "Hollow Water", "Gorilla Funk Two", "Hazy Lazy", "Druid Soul", "Night Of The Fox", "Hell's Pilgrims", and "Space Debris". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Buddy MilesExpressway To Your Skull ... LP
Mercury, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A super tripped-out blend of rock, funk, and soul – easily one of Buddy Miles' most mindblowing albums – and a classic that never lets up at all! Buddy's leading the whole group on drums – really kicking things large from behind the kit – while the rest of the group jams in a heavy style that's got plenty of fuzzed-out guitar and jazzy horn riffs – virtually a blueprint for countless other rock funk groups that copped Buddy's style in years to come. The drums alone are worth the price of admission – but the whole album's so right, tight, and outta sight that it's been a favorite in our crates for years! Titles include "Train", "Let Your Lovelight Shine", "Don't Mess With Cupid", "Funky Mule", and "Wrap It Up". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing. Cover has light wear and a trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ Beastie BoysRoot Down EP (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Grand Royal/Capitol, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The funky Root Down EP by the Beastie Boys – riding high on a mid 90s creative peak! Root Down featuring a trio of versions of the title track and Ill Communication album standout, based on the Jimmy Smith's classic of the same name – and in hindsight, you really have to hand it to the Beasties, not only sampling and celebrating classic early 70s jazz funk, but for their earnest wish to introduce Jimmy Smith to the pop culture kids of the 90s – including a killer remix by the mighty Prince Paul. Also includes some live recordings from the time of classic Beasties tracks like"Time For Livin", "The Maestro", "Somethin's Got To Give", Time To Get Ill", thier punky "Heart Attack Man", "Sabrosa" and "Flute Loop". Damu The FudgemunkConversation Peace ... LP
KPM/Def Presse, 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 30.98
A fantastic album from Damu The Fudgemunk, and a set that kicks off a whole new series in the sound library universe too – one that has contemporary producers getting access to classic samples from the KPM Sound Library catalog, while also adding their own music to the label too! Here, Damu samples classic sound library funk by Johnny Pearson, Johnny Hawksworth, Yvan Julien, Alan Hawkshaw, and other KPM giants – sometimes serving up instrumentals, but often adding in contributions from guests who include Raw Poetic, Blu, Nitty Scott, and Insight Innovates. Given that the core sounds are right up our alley, the record sounds fantastic – and if you're worried about this not being close enough to Damu's other records, put those fears aside – as the whole thing more than lives up to that legacy too. Titles include "Upload Optimism", "Enchanted Spirits", "Reporting", "Power Of Mind", "God Speed", and the "For Better Or Worse" suite. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Curtis HardingFace Your Fear ... LP
Anti, 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover looks a lot like a vintage soul album from the 70s – and the whole thing sounds a lot like one too – as the vocals of Curtis Harding are maybe even more wonderful here than on his debut album, and set up with these majestic grooves that are completely outta sight! The record blends deep soul, funky currents, and soaring arrangements – all with a no-nonsense, no-gimmick vibe that hardly sounds like a contemporary effort at all – and instead, much more like one of those rare times when a current producer can really get a classic sound just right! Sam Cohen mixed and produced most of the cuts here – so our hat's most likely off to him, as he's in a rare contemporary breed that might include Adrian Younge – but the strength of Harding's ability to slide right into the grooves is also a key part of the album's success, as is the really righteous quality of his songs. Titles include "Face Your Fear", "On & On", "Wednesday Morning Atonement", "Need Your Love", "Dream Girl", "Welcome To My World", "Ghost Of You", and "Need My Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

Leon's CreationThis Is The Beginning ... LP
Studio 10/Acid Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 27.99
A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". ✨✧ Barney WilenMoshi (180 gram pressing – with bonus DVD) ... LP
Saravah/Souffle Continu (Italy), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A wild and groundbreaking record recorded by the great French tenor player Barney Wilen! Although he got his start as a bebopper in the 50's, Wilen sort of dropped out of sight by the end of the 60's – and only emerged from time to time to cut strangely experimental sides. This record is unlike anything he ever made, and features a wild mix of African rhythms, ambient sound, and Wilen's deep deep tenor. By this point, Wilen had been absorbing a lot of different influences, from Coltrane, to Pharoah Sanders, to some of the European free players, and his sound is a weird mish mash of styles that weaves in and out of all the stuff on the record. It's a haunting bit of afro jazz and funky noise, with some cuts that are spacey, and others that are nice and funky. Includes the cuts "Afrika Freak Out" and "Zombizar", plus lots of other goodies! A fantastic pressing – with a bonus 20 page booklet of notes and pictures, and a bonus DVD with a film about the album! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes a DVD of Caroline De Bendern's film "A L'Intention De Mademoiselle Issoufou A Bilma"!)
