A great take on the funky styles of the 80s – as Dead End Boogie work here with a spare drum machine rhythm on "New Tires", sewn together with a wicked bassline, then given all these light guitar and keyboard touches along the way – but all with production that's a lot more lo-fi than any 80s groove – and we mean that in a really great way! The flipside has a similar approach – but is slower, murkier, and moodier too. 7-inch, Vinyl record
A moody little funk track from the production genius of Misha Panfilov – whose work seems to be moving more and more into a category of its own! "The Rays" has a strange, spare vocal chorus that's abstracted and echoed in the production – used wordlessly alongside an echoey guitar line and a very moogy keyboard – all grounded with romping drums! The drums romp even more on the flipside – moving quickly to keep the energy up – while the guitar and other elements seem to get even weirder and waterier in the mix! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Excellent work from this Chicago soul great! "More Power" is one of Cash's best songs – and it's got a hard-rolling funky sound that reminds us a lot of some of Syl Johnson's work on Twinight. Like those cuts, it's got a rolling bass at the bottom – pushing Cash's voice over the top, and keeping the track humming all the way through. "I'll Always Love" is great too – a slower ballad number, but done beautifully, with raw vocals from Cash! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Groundbreaking early work from James! We're not sure when "Let Yourself Go" was released – but it's got these fantastic guitars on the beat, very much in the "Papa's Brand New Bag" or "Out Of Sight" mode, although a bit rawer and rootsier. Proof though, that James had a handle on funk as early as he wanted to! Great stuff – and one of those cuts that should be discovered a bit more! 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the blueprints of hip hop! At the time, Chic's "Good Times" just seemed like a wickedly funky pop tune – but who knew that that bass and guitar groove would inspire a whole generation of hip hoppers, bouncing along in a groove that was at once at home on the roller rink or the wheels of steel! 7-inch, Vinyl record
