✨✧ Art Blakey's Jazz MessengersLes Liaisons Dangereuses (Epic) ... LP
Epic, Late 50s. Very Good ... $24.99
Art Blakey's soundtrack to this fantastic French film is one of his best non-Blue Note albums ever – and it's got the additional bonus of featuring performances by the great French tenor star Barney Wilen! The tunes here are way more than just short scene-setting soundtrack numbers – and are instead some incredibly memorable numbers from these great years of the Jazz Messengers – handled with all the fire of their Blue Note sides. The date was recorded in New York – with Wilen on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Bobby Timmons on piano – and the tracks are a great mix of hardbop riffs and very catchy jazzy themes for the soundtrack. Titles include "No Problem", "Weehawken Mad Pad", "Valmontana", and "Miguel's Party". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Epic pressing, matrix ending in 1B/2B. Cover has light wear.)

Ray BryantRay Bryant Trio (Epic) ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1956. Used ... $12.99
The first full album from the great Ray Bryant – recorded shortly after his famous Epic Records session with Betty Carter! The album's got Ray grooving in a hard early soul jazz mode – working in a trio with either Kenny Clarke or Osie Johnson on drums, and Wyatt Reuther on bass – at a level that still shows some influence from other pianists, but already with that unique hard-left style that would make Bryant a big favorite in short years to come. Candido joins in on congas on 2 of the album's best tracks – a hard grooving take on "Night In Tunisia", plus Ray's classic "Cubano Chant", a dancing Latin groover that went onto become an oft-recorded Latin Jazz standard – and other titles include "Pawn Ticket", "Philadelphia Bound", and "Off Shore". ✨✧ DonovanGift From A Flower To A Garden (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1967. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the trippiest albums ever from Donovan, as you might guess from the title – a double-length gem that's filled with wonderfully groovy tunes! The set was cut during Donovan's killer years with producer Mickie Most in the late 60s – and it's got an instrumental feel that's even more laidback than some of his others from the time – mostly hip small combo instrumentation that features organ from Mike O'Neil, flute from Harold McNair, and vibes from Mike Carr – all done with some hip jazzy touches underneath Donovan's lead acoustic guitar – a folk-funk blend that's totally great, and which clearly set the scene for countless other imitations to come! Nobody can touch Donovan's charm at this point, though – and the album's a treasure through and through – filled with great tunes that include "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Skip A Long Sam", "Sun", "Little Boy In Corduroy", "Oh Gosh", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "Song Of The Naturalist's Wife", "Lay Of The Last Tinker", "The Lullaby Of Spring", "The Magpie", "Epistle To Derroll", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", and "Mad John's Escape". Merle HaggardEpic Collection/Chill Factor/5:01 Blues ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A trio of 80s albums from Merle Haggard – all brought together in a single collection! The Epic Collection has a title that's a bit confusing – an album issued on Epic Records, but not a collection of earlier material – as the whole thing's a new live recording, Haggard's first for the label! Merle really scored big with live albums on Capitol in the early 70s – and he sounds equally great here – working through lots of his own material in a lean, classic-styled setting – in front of an audience that's clearly going mad in his presence! Titles include "Sing A Sad Song", "Holding Things Together", "Working Mans' Blues", "Trouble In Mind", "I Always Get Lucky With You", "Every Fool Has A Rainbow", and "Honky Tonk Night Time Man/Old Man From The Mountain". Chill Factor is a seminal 80s album from Merle Haggard – from a time when the singer was changing things up a bit – both with a maturing style of vocals, and with a shift in themes in his songs! Merle's no less heartfelt here than on the early Capitol classics – but he's clearly lived a lot more life, and maybe not all of it on the road or behind bars – as he demonstrates this great sensitivity for the human condition, and his own as well – spun out beautifully on tunes that include "Thirty Again", "Man From Another Time", "We Never Touch Ag All", "1929", "I Don't Have Any Love Around", and "After Dark". 5:01 Blues is Merle Haggard's last album for Epic Records – part of a great run that helped further elevate the singer's genius during the 80s! The spirit of the songs follows nicely from Hag's earlier gems from the time – like Chill Factor or Kern River – music that's quite different that the Capitol years, but in a really great way – and which marks Haggard as one of the few of his time than can really grow and shift as a country singer over the decades without losing quality or steam at all – an elite group that might include George Jones and Willie Nelson too. Titles include "Broken Friend", "Losin In Las Vegas", "Wouldn't That Be Something", "Somewhere Down The Line", "A Better Love Next Time", and "Sea Of Heartbreak". CD

Antonio Carlos Jobim & Luiz BonfaBlack Orpheus – Original Soundtrack (Epic) ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. Very Good ... $5.99
One of the greatest soundtracks ever – a record that set a whole new standard for audio representation of a film! The mad music for the set was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vincius De Moraes – and performed by Luiz Bonfa on guitar – but despite such prime bossa pedigree, the whole thing's got a sound that goes way beyond the familiar – a crazy mix of batucada percussion, samba rhythms, bossa guitar, and loads of sound effects from the film – so much so that the first half of the record is almost a sound-for-sound replication of the first 20 minutes of the movie! The sound collage is amazing – an extremely unique approach to soundtrack representation, and one that's never been done so beautifully since. A truly breathtaking record, filled with mindblowing sounds – and an early example of the genius that would explode in 60s music in Brazil. Some key bossa classics are represented here in early versions – including "Felicidade", "O Nosso Amor", and "Manha De Carnaval" – but they're wrapped up in odd sounds and rhythms that really make them sound different! Melba had cut some great work before this set, but here things really seem to come together – her amazing range, her ability to be expressive without going over the top, and her maturing role as a soul singer – which would take her to great territory in years to come! There's almost an indie soul vibe to the record at times – never too overtly commercial, and sophisticated but not hitting you over the head either – on titles that include "You Stepped Into My Life", "Happy", "Pick Me Up I'll Dance", "There's No Other Like You", "Together Forever", and "It's Hard Not To Like You". ✨✧ Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! Epic/Real Gone, 1964. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
Pure pop from the Polish prince – a classic Christmas set issued during the height of Bobby Vinton's 60s years on Epic Records! The album's got this quality that makes similar use of Vinton's vocals as some of the Johnny Mathis magic on similar Christmas records – a style that still echoes the clarity and punch of his pop recordings, but also brings in a bit of majesty befitting the season – cast in fuller arrangements from Stan Applebaum, Ray Ellis, and Hugo Winterhalter! The song selection is surprisingly nice – with some unusual songs that make the album a real standout – including a great version of Burt Bacharach's "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle", plus "Dearest Santa", "The Greatest Gift", "Peppermint Stick Parade", "Three Wise Men Wise Men Three", "The Christmas Tree", "Christmas Angel", and "Christmas Chopsticks". Brainfeeder, 2015. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". Carl AndersonOn & On ... LP
Epic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A sweet second set from 80s singer Carl Anderson – a date that's got poise, class, and a heck of a lot of soul! Although a mainstream effort, there's a nice sort of depth to the record – one that shows that Columbia wasn't pitching Anderson as much towards a crossover artist as they were some of their other mid 80s acts – instead, letting him really hang back and do his own thing – in a warmly-swinging mode that still holds up beautifully over the years! The record's a real standout in 80s mainstream male soul – and thanks is certainly due to producer/arrangers John Skip Anderson and Steve Williams, who carefully avoid the commercial side of the spectrum. Titles include "Don't Make Me Wait", "Try", "Keep It Alive", "On & On", "Lately", and "Time To Win". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Bailey2 Feet In The Gutter ... LP
Epic, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $5.99
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". A old favorite on the south side of Chicago! LP, Vinyl record album

Heavy duty hardbop – one of three amazing Epic Records sessions cut by drummer Dave Bailey! Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! In fact, this album would have been right at home on either imprint – a smoking session of soulful hardbop, with very long songs that allow plenty of room for solos by players who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Horace Parlan on piano – who are all in the group with Dave, alongside bassist Peck Morrison. There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". A beautiful mid 50s issue of some of the classic material that Lester Young recorded with Count Basie during the late 30s – all nicely packaged with a great cover, and annotated in a way that offers a lot more information than the original release of the material on 78rpm discs! These are the records that made Lester a giant – and for good reason, as the Basie setting seems to propel Young's horn with even more force than it might have on its own – allowing a great setting for the fresh voice that would go onto transform generations of tenor players to come! Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. A sweet funky classic from guitar genius George Benson – and a record that features some surprising soul arrangements from Pee Wee Ellis – also known for his classic work with the James Brown Band of the late 60s! Pee Wee's got a tighter groove here than on some of George's earlier CTI albums – but still keeps things open enough, so that Benson gets plenty of room to solo – a bit like the vibe of some of his late 60s albums for Verve and A&M. George is the main soloist – but the group is super-hip, with Harold Mabern on electric piano, Frank Foster on tenor, and a little bit of extra guitar from Earl Klugh. George is pulling no punches on this one – really hitting hard on his solos with a freer approach than he used on most of his other records from the time. Titles include "Dance", "Plum", "Body Talk", and "Top Of The World" – and most tracks are looong! CD

Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! Titles include "Let Me Come Closer To You", "I Can't Live Without You", "Smokey Day", and "Say You Don't Mind" – plus a fantastic cover of "Misty Roses", and the more rocking "She Loves The Way They Love Her". Heavy early 70s grooves from Randy California – the former Spirit guitarist, and a solid post Hendrix, post psychedelica album cut for Epic! A killer classic from Bob "Catfish" Hodge – a hell of a singer from the heady Detroit scene of the 60s, and one who really made his mark with this fantastic debut on Epic Records! Bob's a blues-inspired artist at the core, but he opens up here with enough freak and fuzz to match the music of Shuggie Otis at the start of the 70s – thanks to great guitar from Mark Manko – and like some of Shuggie's first two sets on Epic, the whole thing is a mad mix of blues and rock, funk and soul – with searing guitar solos that really hold the whole thing together! The whole thing's a seminal effort for pushing this style of music past any blues rock cliches – and titles include "Catfish", "No Place To Hide", "The Hawk", "Sundown Man", "Tradition", and "Catfish/Get High Get Naked Get Down". Live Catfish is maybe the best-known of the two classic Catfish albums from the start of the 70s – a searing live set recorded in the group's hometown of Detroit, with a raw, ragged style that sets them up with all of their other hip contemporaries in the Motor City! This time around, Dallas Hodge handles the guitar with a mix of blues roots and freaky fuzz – a perfect match for the rough-edged vocals of Bob "Catfish" Hodge – as the group starts the set with Motown material, the moves into some even headier tunes of their own! The debut album from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD

A massive hit for Stanley Clarke – a record that has him reigning in some of his wilder elements a bit, and going for a groove that's right in the pocket! There's a definite soul fusion influence going on here – Clarke trying to hit the same groove as some of his contemporaries, and doing a pretty good job of it in the process. Still, the album's never as polished as efforts like this on Blue Note or Elektra – just a bit more focused than before, but in a really good way. David Sancious and Chick Corea both play keyboards on the set – and tracks include "School Days", "Hot Fun", "Desert Song", "The Dancer", and "Quiet Afternoon". CD

Fully-formed genius from Stanley Clarke – his first album for Columbia Records, and already a radical departure from the spiritual jazz of his previous set for Polydor! This Clarke's the one who'd play on countless sets of headphones in the 70s – the bassist who really revolutionized fusion, and managed to link it back to a huge audience of fans from rock, soul, and other genres! And despite the cliches to come, this album's still a masterpiece of power – funky at points, jamming at others, and nicely spacey when it needs to be – all produced and arranged with great care by Stanley, and featuring a host of players who include Jan Hammer on keyboards, Tony Williams on drums, Airto on percussion, and some assorted brass and string players as well. The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who's probably best known to the world for his work with Charles Mingus, or for his other 60s session on Blue Note! This album's quite different than both of those aspects of Johnny's career – and has him blowing some sweetly soulful ballads in a quartet setting with Kenny Drew on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. The feel is quite like some of Art Farmer's best of this nature from the time – laidback, but never too sleepy or sloppy – and Johnny definitely brings an edge to the record on the best numbers. A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". A gem of a record from the glory days of the American horror scene – particularly that point when the b-movie world got so camp, folks were able to have a bit of a laugh at its expense! Milton Delugg crafted this cool little set at a time when the airwaves were brimming over with The Munsters, Adams Family, and late night monster flicks – and the sound is kind of an extension of the musical modes of both shows, taken through straighter instrumental arrangements! Sonny Lester produced the set, and allows for a good number of jazzy elements – particularly on organ, which is used a fair bit throughout – probably played by a great musician whose name never got to appear on the credits. There's also electric guitar and lots of very dynamic horn parts – on titles that include "Bewitched", "Theme For Frankenstein", "Ghost Meets Ghoul", "Theme For Dracula", "The Outer Limits", "Adams Family", "Munsters Theme", and "Theme For The Thing". Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s – here in the original mono mix! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch".
