Epic, Late 60s/Mid 70s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Tyrone! Certainly one of the undisputed masters of the Chicago soul scene, with a voice that was instantly recognizable, and a style that matched raw roots with classy production. This early 80's set brings together 12 of Tyrone's classic sides for the Dakar/Brunswick label. Titles included are "Can I Change My Mind", "A Woman Needs To Be Loved", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time", "There It Is", "I Wish It Was Me", "Without You In My Life", "Is It Something You've Got", "I Had It All The Time", "Turning Point", "I'll Be Right Here", "Could I Forget You", and "Let Me Back In". DonovanGift From A Flower To A Garden (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good- 2LP Box Set ... $9.99
One of the trippiest albums ever from Donovan, as you might guess from the title – a double-length gem that's filled with wonderfully groovy tunes! The set was cut during Donovan's killer years with producer Mickie Most in the late 60s – and it's got an instrumental feel that's even more laidback than some of his others from the time – mostly hip small combo instrumentation that features organ from Mike O'Neil, flute from Harold McNair, and vibes from Mike Carr – all done with some hip jazzy touches underneath Donovan's lead acoustic guitar – a folk-funk blend that's totally great, and which clearly set the scene for countless other imitations to come! Nobody can touch Donovan's charm at this point, though – and the album's a treasure through and through – filled with great tunes that include "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Skip A Long Sam", "Sun", "Little Boy In Corduroy", "Oh Gosh", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "Song Of The Naturalist's Wife", "Lay Of The Last Tinker", "The Lullaby Of Spring", "The Magpie", "Epistle To Derroll", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", and "Mad John's Escape". Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". Staple SingersFor What It's Worth – The Complete Epic Recordings 1964 to 1968 (Amen/Pray On/Freedom Highway/Why/For What It's Worth/What The World Needs Now) (3CD set) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! ✨✧ Bobby VintonVery Merry Christmas – The Complete Epic Christmas Collection ... CD
Epic/Real Gone, 1964. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure pop from the Polish prince – a classic Christmas set issued during the height of Bobby Vinton's 60s years on Epic Records! The album's got this quality that makes similar use of Vinton's vocals as some of the Johnny Mathis magic on similar Christmas records – a style that still echoes the clarity and punch of his pop recordings, but also brings in a bit of majesty befitting the season – cast in fuller arrangements from Stan Applebaum, Ray Ellis, and Hugo Winterhalter! The song selection is surprisingly nice – with some unusual songs that make the album a real standout – including a great version of Burt Bacharach's "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle", plus "Dearest Santa", "The Greatest Gift", "Peppermint Stick Parade", "Three Wise Men Wise Men Three", "The Christmas Tree", "Christmas Angel", and "Christmas Chopsticks". CD features the full Very Merry Christmas album – plus bonus tracks "My Christmas Prayer", "Silver Bells", "Winter Love", "O Holy Night", "Kissin Christmas", and "Christmas Eve In My Home Town". CD

Dave Bailey2 Feet In The Gutter ... LP
Epic, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". A old favorite on the south side of Chicago! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave Bailey SextetGetting' Into Somethin' ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Heavy duty hardbop – one of three amazing Epic Records sessions cut by drummer Dave Bailey! Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! In fact, this album would have been right at home on either imprint – a smoking session of soulful hardbop, with very long songs that allow plenty of room for solos by players who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Horace Parlan on piano – who are all in the group with Dave, alongside bassist Peck Morrison. There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". Epic, 1989. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The huge breakout album from Basia – a set that had the Polish-born singer reaching out to the well-deserved global fame that you might guess from the title! Basia works closely here with Danny White – who gives the record a London-bred blend of pop and soul – one that's a cut above more mainstream hits, with enough care to recognize the jazz currents in Basia's vocals, and her deeper range too. The vibe's a bit like the earliest Swing Out Sister material, but less jazzy overall – and titles include "Best Friends", "Not An Angel", "Copernicus", "Cruising For Bruising", "Ordinary People", "Baby You're Mine", and "Until You Come Back To Me". Classic 30s work from trumpeter Bunny Berigan – served up here in a great 50s LP package that showcases his talents on the horn! There's a warmth and raspy charm to these sides that instantly shows why Berigan was a standout player at the time – an artist who could hit the hard notes with the frenzy of any of his competitors, but also an entertainer who was willing to step back and personalize (and vocalize) things when needed. Players on the tunes include many who would go onto lead their own groups – Artie Shaw, Jack Teagarden, Claude Thornhill, and others – and titles include "I Can't Get Started With You", "Solo Hop", "Dixieland Shuffle", "It's Been So Long", "Let Yourself Go", "If I Had My Way", "I'd Rather Lead A Band", and "A Melody From The Sky". A great little album from Ruby Braff – simply blown in a small combo setting, with a strong focus on Braff's sparkling tone on the trumpet! The groups vary throughout the course of the set, but all players are pretty darn great – and tunes include guitar from Steve Jordan, vibes by Don Elliott, and even some nice tenor work from Coleman Hawkins. Braff's own playing is a bit free of the overly-sentimental tones that sometimes mar his other records – and he's got a clarity and charm here that makes the record one of his best full length sets ever. ✨✧ CatfishGet Down/Live Catfish ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two classics from Catfish – back to back in a single set! First up is the self-titled Catfish – a killer classic from Bob "Catfish" Hodge – a hell of a singer from the heady Detroit scene of the 60s, and one who really made his mark with this fantastic debut on Epic Records! Bob's a blues-inspired artist at the core, but he opens up here with enough freak and fuzz to match the music of Shuggie Otis at the start of the 70s – thanks to great guitar from Mark Manko – and like some of Shuggie's first two sets on Epic, the whole thing is a mad mix of blues and rock, funk and soul – with searing guitar solos that really hold the whole thing together! The whole thing's a seminal effort for pushing this style of music past any blues rock cliches – and titles include "Catfish", "No Place To Hide", "The Hawk", "Sundown Man", "Tradition", and "Catfish/Get High Get Naked Get Down". Live Catfish is maybe the best-known of the two classic Catfish albums from the start of the 70s – a searing live set recorded in the group's hometown of Detroit, with a raw, ragged style that sets them up with all of their other hip contemporaries in the Motor City! This time around, Dallas Hodge handles the guitar with a mix of blues roots and freaky fuzz – a perfect match for the rough-edged vocals of Bob "Catfish" Hodge – as the group starts the set with Motown material, the moves into some even headier tunes of their own! Titles include "Money", "Nowhere To Run", "Letter To Nixon", "Mississippi River", and "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On". CD

A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Duke on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and even Dorothy Ashby on harp! Chancler sings lead vocals on most cuts – but he's also joined by Virginia Ayers and Leo Mille on some cuts too – making for a really well-rounded sound that's easily one of the best jazz-into-soul sessions like this from the 70s – almost topping the more famous work from folks like Lenny White or Mtume! French journalist/composer Andre Hodier was one of the leading voices of European jazz in the postwar years – a committed modernist, but with a strong understanding of all the traditions of jazz. This classic set features American drummer Kenny Clarke working with a group of French musicians on a set of originals and jazz standards set to arrangements by Hodier. Players include trumpeter Roger Guerin, pianists Marial Solal and Rene Utreger, and saxophonists Armand Migani and Hubert Rostaing. The set's a great batch of angular bop numbers – and it's a great chance to hear what Clarke can really do on the drum kit when he's given a chance to open up. The second album from The Clash – ferocious, melodic and masterful bits of barbed greatness from the group – the greatest flaw of which is that it's not the first album. They're still completely great, playing in peak form even with the less shambling, slightly more polished production of Sandy Pearlman. This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Epic (Japan), 1980. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". ✨✧ Natalie ColeI'm Ready ... LP
Epic, 1983. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A great re-launch for the sound of Natalie Cole in the 80s – an album that represents a shift from Capitol Records to Epic, but which also still features work from Cole's best collaborators – the soulful team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy! The Chicago duo help out on most of the best tracks here – and revamp the Cole sound of the 70s with a style that's a bit leaner, and more suited to 80s soul arrangements – but which also still has a fullness that suits Natalie best! Instrumentation is never too electric or stiff, and there's a nice use of strings – in a subtle way that's never too dated, but which underscores the classier elements in Cole's approach. Stanley Clarke produced a bit on the set, too – and titles include "Too Much Mister", "I Won't Deny You", "Where's Your Angel", "I'm Your Mirror", "Straight From The Heart", "Keep It On The Outside", and "Time Heals All Wounds". Lou CourtneyI'm In Need Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99
A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". Epic/Real Gone, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A gem of a record from the glory days of the American horror scene – particularly that point when the b-movie world got so camp, folks were able to have a bit of a laugh at its expense! Milton Delugg crafted this cool little set at a time when the airwaves were brimming over with The Munsters, Adams Family, and late night monster flicks – and the sound is kind of an extension of the musical modes of both shows, taken through straighter instrumental arrangements! Sonny Lester produced the set, and allows for a good number of jazzy elements – particularly on organ, which is used a fair bit throughout – probably played by a great musician whose name never got to appear on the credits. There's also electric guitar and lots of very dynamic horn parts – on titles that include "Bewitched", "Theme For Frankenstein", "Ghost Meets Ghoul", "Theme For Dracula", "The Outer Limits", "Adams Family", "Munsters Theme", and "Theme For The Thing". Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a beautiful blend of folk, psychedelic, and jazz-based modes – handled with simple charm throughout, and performed by a group that includes funky sound library genius Alan Hawkshaw on piano, and the great Harold McNair on flute! The title track "Barabajagal" is one of Donovan's most amazing tunes of all time – a funky little number that dances around with some great heavy drums, and which also features guitar by a young Jeff Beck! A wonderful complement to the Donovan studio albums from the late 60s – a well-recorded live date from the US. The style of the tunes is a bit different than some of their more famous album and single versions – with a relaxed approach to the work that leans a bit more on some of Donovan's folksy roots, but still features the jazzier touches that happened after his mid 60s "transformation" – thanks to plenty of great sax and flute from the legendary Harold McNair, who's a key part of the small combo on the set! Includes "Widow With Shawl", "Preachin Love", "The Fat Angel", "Celeste", "Poor Cow", "There Is A Mountain", "Isle Of Islay", "Young Girl Blues", and "Writer In The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Easily one of the headiest Donovan albums of the 60s – a record that moves past the simple psychedelic pop of earlier hits, and into a range of mind-expanding themes and styles! There's a cerebral quality here that seems to take hold even on the simpler, catchier tunes – a deeply introspective approach that has Donovan working in a world that's really all his own – less concerned with hit singles, and more focused on a personal journey in music, one that ties together many strands of music borrowed from Celtic, West Indian, jazz, and folk sources. Arrangers are John Cameron and John Paul Jones – and titles include "Get Thy Bearings", "Peregrine", "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl", "West Indian Lady", "Jennifer Juniper", "Tangier", "The River Song", "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow", and "Hi It's Been A Long Time". DonovanMellow Yellow ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good ... $16.99
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". One of the grooviest albums of the 60s – and the first album in Donovan's legendary run with producer Mickie Most! The sound here is light years away from the heavy Dylan of Donovan's first recordings – and is steeped in eastern influences that sparkle in both the songwriting and arrangements – and which can be most strongly heard in the album's trademark use of tablas and electric sitar! Donovan's vocals are completely sublime, too – done in that raspy, almost lispy style that brings out all the best edges in his songwriting – and the lyrics of the tunes are a mind-expanding array of themes that really pushed the boundaries of 60s pop. Titles include the sublime classic "Sunshine Superman", plus "Bert's Blues", "The Fat Angel", "The Trip", "Celeste", "Three Kingfishers", and the funky funky "Season Of The Witch"! A sweet bit of modern funk from George Duke – working here in a mode that's definitely tighter and more soul-based than his trippier albums of the early 70s – but also in a groove that's pretty darn sweet! George wonderfully blends together his jazz roots and some of the wider soul styles he'd helped forge on the California scene – keeping things smooth, but never slick – bringing in some nice acoustic percussion alongside the album's overall electric sound. A funky concept album from George Duke – and one that's filled with some mighty nice grooves! Guardians Of The Light is a full-on "musical fantasy" – with the story line laid out in the liner notes, yet still a bit difficult to follow – but we can't fault him for that when it's done in his masterful R&B-fusion-funk approach! George sings on all cuts, but he also gets some stellar vocal assistance from Jeffrey Osborne, Portia Griffin, and Patti Austin. Epic/Wounded Bird, 1963. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A really really wonderful little record – one that's far more than you might guess from it's slightly gimmicky title! The session's clearly done in a mode to resonate with the Charlie Byrd or Stan Getz bossa work of the early 60s, but it's also got a slightly offbeat quality that makes it really unique – a sound that partly comes from the use of three guitars by three relatively different players, and from the way that the tunes themselves are put together. There's almost a jam session feel at times here – with the guitars coming together in a tension of different voices, hardly the sort of thing you'd hear in a regular bossa album. But equally great is the tenor sax work of Bob Enevoldsen – which comes in with a sharper edge and a bit more soul than his 50s sides – creating a deeper quality to the tunes that's really great. Percussion is by a trio that includes Milt Holland, Bob Neel, and Chico Guerrero – and Donn Trenner plays piano and Bob Bertaux is on bass. Titles include "I Told Ya I Love Ya Now Get Out", "Sweet Dreams", "Bossa Nova #2", "Bossa Nova Samba", and "Leave It To Me". CD
