One of the greatest Airto records ever – a really overlooked record cut for the mostly-Latin Montuno label in the 80s! The album's quite spare, and almost more in a Latin mode at times – given the harder percussion on the set, and the firey recording style given to the set by Montuno – but it also echoes some of the great spare styles that Airto used in his first American recordings, too – the sessions he cut for Cobblestone/Buddah right at the start of the 70s. Susan Alcorn has certainly become one of the most striking jazz musicians in recent years – and one of the few artists to ever use pedal steel in the context of free improvisation and more avant sounds! Yet here, Alcorn is also working in territory that has a bit more structure – using her Septeto Del Sur group, on tunes that have a beautifully evocative vibe! The project is maybe to Alcorn's more avant work what Charlie Haden's Liberation Music group was to his – as Susan works alongside the guitar of Luis Alvarez, charango of Francisco Araya, flute and quena of Rodrigo Bobadilla, cuatro and drums of Claudio Araya, and violin of Danka Villaneuva – all players who help Alcorn expand on concepts borrowed from Chilean folk music, and turned into modern instrumental experiments – as warmer themes mix with bolder improvised moments. Herb Alpert's first-ever album – a runaway hit that was the birthplace of so many groovy things – not just the start of the Tijuana Brass sound, also the birth of A&M Records! A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. A haunting bit of jazz from the Venezuelan scene of the early 70s – one of those great records from a time when the nation was really riding high, yet one that's hardly ever gotten much exposure on a global scale either! Pianist Virgilo Armas leads the group, and the whole thing has the fluid complexity of bossa nova record – really modern in approach, yet moving along in a very organic way – as Virgilo's piano mixes with the work of Domingo Moret on flute, Rodolfo Buenano on bass, Guillermo Tariba on drums, and Tata Guerra on percussion. Yet the vibe is nicely different than Brazilian jazz too – opening up with all these great currents and inflections, on titles that include "Barlovento", "Tamanaco", "Sobre El Orinoco", "Nery", "Caracas Moderna", "Moliendo Cafe", and "Canaima". Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges". The most truly jazz-based group on Norway's hip Jazzland label – a quintet of players that know how to push an avant garde solo into a groove, and vice versa! The album's free-thinking and quite striking – as some tracks crackle with the energy of an early Mingus record, filtered through the colder cooler approaches of the recent Norwegian scene. The lineup features lead tenor and soprano by Fredrik Ljungkvist, plus trumpet by Magnus Broo, piano by Havard Wiik, bass by Ingebrit Haker Flaten, and drums by Paal Nilssen Love. Titles include "Longing For Martin", "Do It", "Psalm", "Fifth Circle", "Krilons Resa", "Prayer", and "El Coto". CD

One of the most unusual albums ever issued on the legendary Discos Fuentes label – and that's saying a lot, given how many unusual albums the company put out! This set's got a core Colombian groove in the rhythms – very much in the rootsy style that the company was making a name for in the 60s – great percussion, a nice raw edge in the production, and that slight variation in groove that made Colombian music a really refreshing change from the sounds of Havana and New York! Yet the real difference here is that the singer is a kid – the lovely Aurita pictured on the cover – a vocalist who's got this unusual depth for someone her age, this rawness at times that really comes across in a striking way – almost the unbridled energy and emotion that you'd never hear from an adult. That quality livens up the grooves in this really unusual way – all the charms of a vintage Discos Fuentes album, but with a very different spin! Two Latin funk classics – back to back in a single set! First up is the self-titled Azteca album – a crowning moment for the west coast Latin scene in the 70s – a wonderful Bay Area set that brings together some of the best talents working on that scene at the time! The set's got a great blend of modes – Latin soul, touches of funk, and plenty of the jazzy inflections you'd expect from a lineup that includes Coke Escovedo on timbales, Paul Jackson on bass, Lenny White on drums, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Victor Pantoja on congas! Vocals are by Pete Escovedo – who brings in a heady soulful sound to the set – and the vibe is a bit like work by Malo or El Chicano, but even more jazz-based overall! Titles include "Peace Everybody", "Empty Prophet", "Can't Take The Funk Out Of Me", "Azteca", "Ah! Ah!", and "Mamita Linda". Next is Pyramid Of The Moon – a really special record from a really special group – one of two sublime 70s gems from Azteca – a wicked blend of jazz, funk, Latin, and soul – all put together by a young Coke Escovedo! Coke's ostensibly the leader of the group, but there's also a richly collaborative feel going on – a style that brings together jazz players like Tom Harrell on trumpet, Mel Martin on saxes, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, and Flip Nunez on organ – and Latin players like Victor Pantoja on congas, Coke Escovedo on timbales, and Pete Escovedo on added percussion. In fact, the set's a key early example of the strength of the Escovedo family – and like their best later efforts, the set really stretches out and pushes the boundaries of conventional genres. There's also some great guest work from Lenny White on drums, Mike Nock on keyboards, and Neal Schon on guitars – and vocals are by a range of singers who really keep things fresh. A rare 70s corker from the mighty Azuquita – featuring his own vocals in the lead of a group directed by Victor Paz, with work on saxes, trumpets, and trombones – plus piano from Marcos Rangel too! Really beautiful sounds from Australian pianist Judy Bailey – a musician that most folks know for her funk work of the 70s, but who was already pretty darn great, right at the start of her career! This lovely little set was recorded in Sydney's El Rocco Jazz Cellar at the start of the 60s – and it features Bailey working with a magically fluid trio with Lyn Christie on bass and John Sangster on drums – the latter of whom you might know for his later work on vibes, and who seems to already have a melodic touch on his drums here! At times, Sangster's almost got a Chico Hamilton-like sense of subtle sound and rhythmic inflection – which works very well alongside the lyrically blue piano lines from Judy. Titles include "Night Dreams", "Night & Day", "Deep Night", "You & The Night & The Music", "Round Midnight", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

A surprisingly great electric session by Chet Baker from the 70s – and a record that's got a bit more force and power than most of his other sets at the time! The format here is a bit tighter and more focused than Baker's recordings for CTI from the period – with electric piano from Kenny Barron or Richie Beirach on all tracks, plus guitar on 3 of the album's 4 tracks, and a fair bit of other horns to flesh out the overall sound. The approach isn't exactly funky, but it's quite driving at times – and Baker's work on trumpet is more sharply pronounced in the setting – a bit bolder and less sorry for itself, with a majesty that rises above the potentially-cluttered feel of the set to take its own at the top. Titles are all long – and include "Love For Sale", "Un Poco Loco", "You Can't Go Home Again", and "El Morro". CD

A sweet bit of Argentine prog, served up with a slightly jazzy vibe at times – maybe in part because by the end of the 70s, so many groups didn't care as much about the lines in the sand that were being drawn a few years before! The keyboards are definitely proggy – spun out by singer Cesar Pueyrredon with an effortless quality – but grounded a bit more by the guitar work, and some rock solid drums and bass – augmented just slightly by guest tenor on one cut.
