An overlooked gem from Diana Ross' 80s years – a record that's quite different than her Motown music of the 60s and 70s, but in a way that really shows the singer stepping out and trying something new! The album's maybe more soulful than some of Diana's previous albums – thanks to work from producer Tom Dowd – and the material is a surprising mix of songs, from sources as varied as Leonard Cohen, Luther Vandross, and Mick Hucknall! The Ashford & Simpson sound is very much in place here – a soaring, joyous approach to the music that comes across with a bit more depth and maturity than Ross' earlier music with The Supremes – a great springboard for her solo years in the 70s, although without some of the overindulgence of later recordings. One of the sexiest sets of vocal jazz to ever come from the British scene – a classic 1960 album by the lovely Diana Dors – easily one of England's best answers to American cheesecake singers of the 50s! As you'll notice by the cover, Diana's got a look that's right up there with Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield – but as a singer, she's far better – with a full range, and good sense of expression – often delivered in the manner of some of the best vocalists working in the US for RCA in the late 50s. The backings are great too – handled by the Wally Stott orchestra with a nice sense of jazz throughout – some really swinging horns that are quite unusual for a UK session like this at the time – and which really further the American feel of the set. A real discovery in music – previously unreleased material recorded by Diana Ross in 1972 – all done in a jazz-based vein! The album was done after Diana's appearance in Lady Sings The Blues, and follows in a clear Billie Holiday-inspired approach to American standards – one that has Gil Askey providing some gently jazzy backings, and Ross singing in a style that's sad and mellow enough to fit the "blue" in the title! Why Motown never issued this one at the time is a real mystery to us – because the record is really wonderful, and a needed deepening of Diana's talents from the time. Plus, given that the whole record was never "finished off" in the 70s, there's a laidback, almost slightly rough quality to the whole thing – presenting Ross in a more earnest interpretation of the mode than might have been the case if it was slicked up for the charts. Motown's second pairing of its two biggest groups of the late 60s – a massive 7-voiced meeting in soul music, with results that are surprisingly great! Frank Wilson produced the whole set, and he does a good job of keeping all players in check – never letting the whole thing get too gimmicky, and managing to convey a sound that brings the best of both groups to the table. Titles include "Sing A Simple Song", "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Why", "For Better Or For Worse", "I'll Be Doggone", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", and a great Motown remake "My Guy My Girl", which features both versions of the hit coming together! One of Diana's big cinematic moments of the 70s – and a record that's better than we remember! The theme of the film – "Mahogany" – was covered so many times during the 70s that it's easy to forget how great it is – a sad, slow tune with a meandering vocal that's quite different from most of Diana's other work at the time. The rest of the album's pretty great too – all instrumental and handled by Gil Askey with some pretty cool arrangements that groove in a style that's almost baroque easy meets blacksploitation. There's a few really great tracks with a nice complicated funky feel – and titles include "My Hero Is A Gun", "feeling Again", "Can You Hear It In My Music", "Tracy", "She's The Ideal Girl", and "Mahogany Suite". Diana Ross makes a big break with Motown for this debut set on RCA – a set that also has the singer making a nice stylistic break as well! The set's got Diana reinventing herself in so many different modes for the 80s – as Ross herself is sitting at the production helm for the record, and does a surprisingly good job of leading the way through a nicely different blend of styles! The set begins with a reworking of the old Frankie Lymon hit "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" – maybe going more retro than Ross ever did in the past – but things quickly step back into the 80s with a range of mellow groovers and ballads that still show that Diana's at the top of her game, vocally – and album to find ways of moving past any of her older, more familiar modes. Arrangements are by Ray Chew, Leon Pendarvis, Rob Mounsey, and Ron frangipane – and titles include "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Endless Love", "It's Never Too Late", "Sweet Nothings", "Two Can Make It", "Work That Body", "Mirror Mirror", and "Sweet Surrender". A great little album from Diana Ross – maybe one of her lesser-known efforts with The Supremes, and a set that really points the way towards the solo years to come! One of the reasons for that is that the set really just features Diana out in the lead, with different backing singers behind – all the great songs from the show, but recast with these sophisticated soul arrangements by Gil Askey – very groovy, very Motown, but also with a lot stronger focus on Ross upfront than usual! In a way, the shift is a fantastic nod to Diana's growing role as a star – really claiming her as the black Streisand, a position that she's clearly confident with, and maybe even beats Barbara on the vocal tip too. Titles include "Funny Girl", "The Music That Makes Me Dance", "Don't Rain On My Parade", "People", "Cornet Man", "His Love Makes Me Beautiful", "Sadie Sadie", and "I'm The Greatest Star" – the last of which would make a nice theme song for Diana's 70s years! This expanded version not only marks the first time the record has been on CD – it also features both the stereo and the mono mixes of the record – plus the original recording of the album, with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong – the real Supremes recording of the set!
