✨✧ AirtoFree/Identity/Promises Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Alessandro Alessandroni/Francesco DeMasiLesbo (180 gram limited edition pressing) ... LP
Beat/BTF (Italy), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99 44.99
Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

Arthur Brown's Kingdom ComeEternal Messenger – An Anthology 1970 to 1973 (Galactic Zoo Dossier/Kingdom Come/Journey/Jam/BBC Sessions/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
All the albums from this mindblowing group – plus lots of bonus material too! First up is the legendary Galactic Zoo Dossier album – the start of a fantastic chapter for the legendary Arthur Brown – the first album issued with his Kingdom Come group, a combo who were even more insane than his Crazy World project of the late 60s! Brown is the quintessential front man here – singing in this really dynamic, dramatic way that's years ahead of its time – much more upfront than so many of the singers of the psych generation, and even the new hard rock vocalists too – at a level that makes music like this a great inspiration for so man styles to come! The instrumentation is as dynamic as the vocals, too – not prog jamming, but instead this really focused, fused blend of heavy drums, searing guitar, and organ – all sending things way way over the top. Titles include "Internal Messenger", "Night Of The Pigs", "Trouble", "Sunrise", "Brains", the "Galactic Zoo/Space Plucks" medley, "Creep", and "Creation". Kingdom Come is an album that bears the title of the larger group as a whole, but it's clear that mainman Arthur Brown is still very much at the helm – propelling the fantastic energy of the group almost like some carnival ringmaster – as his lyrics burst out with a power to match all the intensity of the group's guitar, organ, heavy bass, and drum interplay! There's a few moments that are nicely more complicated than before – almost as if Brown is using the new advances of the 70s to bring even more mania to his music – but without losing the rocking power of the previous records, nor giving way to too-jamming prog modes either. Titles include "Water", "City Melody", "Traffic Light Song", "Love Is A Spirit That Will Never Die", "The Teacher", and "The Experiment". Journey is an overlooked gem from the great Arthur Brown – not a set with his late 60s Crazy World group, but instead some great material done with Kingdom Come – a group who seem to be morphing with Brown into a really great space rock sort of combo! The keyboards and electronics here are stronger than before – not Tangerine Dream spacey, but fused with more hard-rocking modes that really take off and fly to the skies – so much so that Brown's vocals are often less a part of the sound than the group's amazing instrumental interplay – which could previously be shadowed a bit by his lead! The whole thing's great – a cool, compressed take on modes that so many others were trying to handle at the time – but maybe never this well. Titles include "Superficial Roadblocks", "Time Captives", "Triangles", "Conception", "Spirit Of Joy", "Come Alive", "Lost Time", and "Corpora Supercelestia". All three albums are presented with bonus tracks – and CD4 features Jam (The First Sessions) – the long jamming that produced the Kingdom Come sound before the first album – and CD5 features BBC sessions from 1971 and 1972! CD
(Comes with a great booklet, and a bonus poster too!)

Angelo BadalamentiBlue Velvet (deluxe edition) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Varese, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
A wonderfully creepy soundtrack – and one that would provide an important preface to the huge musical legacy that Angelo Baldamenti would give David Lynch for Twin Peaks! This soundtrack features half of Baldamenti's eerie, airy sounds – and half of the kind of old school numbers that gave the narrative such an out of time sort of vibe – and which we're happy they were able to include. Baldamenti titles include "Night Streets/Sandy & Jeffrey", "Frank", "Jeffrey's Dark Sid", "Mysteries Of Love", "Going Down To Lincoln/Sound Effects Suite", and "Frank Returns". Other titles include the Julee Cruise vocal version of "Mysteries Of Love" – plus "Honky Tonk" by Bill Doggett, Love Letters" by Ketty Lester, and In Dreams" by Roy Orbison. (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 27. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Friday, November 26. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on November 27 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BandBand (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Includes 7 bonus tracks. CD

Warner, 1978. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most iconic rock and roll shows of all time – the late 70s farewell to The Band – and quite famously, much more than a final concert by an esteemed band, it's actually a rock, pop, folk, blues and soul summit that features The Band as the house band. This landmark document of the event has always been one of rock's more opulent releases – with appearances by Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, The Staples and more. Includes "The From The Last Waltz", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "Down In South New Orleans" with Bobby Charles, "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan, "I Shall Be Released (Finale)", "Rag Mama Rag", "Further Up The Road" with Eric Clapton, "Dry Your Eyes" with Eric Clapton, "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris, "The Weight" with The Staples and more. WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1986. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Magically moody music from Richard Band – sounds that are maybe a bit less creepy than image on the cover, but which transform nicely as the set goes on! Many of these cuts are longish – almost like mini-suites of soundtrack themes – often with strings used in these nicely-stepping ways – familiar and dramatic at some points, but more offbeat at others – with the most amazing highlights being these weird vocal bits – which sound like more atmospheric musings from the folks who live in Whoville from the Grinch cartoon! Titles include "Cantos V", "Cantos Profanae", "Cantos IV", and "Cantos II". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful book of graphic imagination – a book that features 60s-styled ads for toys that never existed – but which take us back to the glory days of Matchbox, Big Daddy Roth, and Aurora Monster Models! The artwork is all by Marty Bauman – who would have made a heck of a toy designer back in the day – as he thrills us with full color creations like the Creepy Clutching Hand, Gorilla Rifle, Savage Cedric, Psychedelic Simians, Misterlectro, Robot Troooper, Super-Python 300, Battling Robot, Rick Mason Undercover Triple Agent, The Mighty Zorok, and lots lots more! Each fake toy gets a full color page – like an ad from the back cover of a vintage comic or kids magazine – and the creations are so cool, we really have trouble believing they never really existed! Matt BerryBlue Elephant ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The music of Matt Berry just keeps getting better and better – to a point where he's almost creating a parallel career to his work on screen – one that's equally great, but which is completely different overall! Berry brought out a wealth of vintage keyboards for the record – pulled from his huge collection – and he mixes those with subtle work on guitar, and guest drums and percussion – all in this swirling blend of sounds that really surpasses the instrumentation of any of his previous work! The set's much more instrumental than vocal – which is maybe part of the charm – and Berry's turned out to be a hell of a musician, as well as a great producer – as he manages to make the record resonate with just the right currents of contemporary psych, but without ever overindulging in that approach. At times, his command of a variety of instruments handled just by himself in the studio seems to rival the work of Sean O'Hagan – and titles include "I Cannot Speak", "Summer Sun", "Safer Passage", "Now Disappear", "Alone", "Blues Inside Me", "Like Stone", "Forget Me", and "Invisible". ✨✧ Matt BerryPhantom Birds ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Completely wonderful work from Matt Berry – an actor that most folks know for his hilarious performances in a number of TV shows – but also a surprisingly strong singer/songwriter, with a down to earth and honest vibe that's completely different than his role on screen! In fact, forget all about Matt Berry on screen – even though we love his work there so much – because this Matt Berry is a completely different individual, one who paints these songs that are often surprisingly dark, but never dreary – and surprisingly honest, both in the lyricism and the execution – which often has Berry singing with a style that's far less ironic than his delivery of his lines. Matt handles most instrumentation – piano, organ, mellotron from his collection of vintage keyboards – plus guitars and harmonica – next to a bit of pedal steel and drums from BJ Cole and Craig Blundell, respectively. Titles include "Man Of Doom", "Something In My Eye", "Intermission", "Hail To The King", "Covered In Clowns", "You Danced All Night", and "Phantom Birds". CD

A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". 2 classics from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! City Life is a fantastic album from the legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! Unfinished Business has The Blackbyrds are at the top of their game – working in a sweet blend of jazz, funk, and soul – all produced to perfection by their mentor Donald Byrd! The groove is quite similar to some of Byrd's best from the time – a bit fuller than the first few records by The Blackbyrds, thanks to the addition of larger horns – and put together in ways that really has them soaring towards the skies on waves or righteous soul! There's vocals on most tracks, but they really take equal place next to the group's wonderful instrumentation – especially the heady keyboards of the mighty Kevin Toney, still a key member of the combo at this point. Titles include "Party Land", "In Life", "Time Is Movin", "Lady", and "You've Got That Something". CD

Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect! The album's as essential as any of the group's earlier albums – and it's filled with great versions of classics like "Supernatural Feeling", "Gut Level", "Walking In Rhythm", "Do It Fluid", "Rock Creek Park", and "Happy Music". RCA, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! The set brings together a few early albums – Jazz At The Blackhawk and Jazz At Storyville – both harder to find sets that show Brubeck mostly working on turning out new versions of older standards, filtered through his modern take to time structures and phrasing. A rock-solid set from Donald Byrd and a great group of players – a record that's got the same sharp edges and dark undercurrents of late 60s classics like Black Jack, Mustang, and Slow Drag! As with those gems, this album's got Donald really experimenting a bit more – especially with the rhythms – which are put forth by a hip trio that features Chick Corea on piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums! But almost even better is the frontline – with Sonny Red making one of his sublime appearances with Byrd, blowing alto with an edge that's amazing – and frequent partner Pepper Adams, adding plenty of baritone on the deep end. The whole thing's great – oddly unreleased until the start of the 80s – and titles include "Samba Yanta", "I Will Wait For You", "Blues Medium Rare", "The Creeper", "Chico-San", "Early Sunday Morning", and "Blues Well Done". Donald Byrd & The BlackbyrdsJazz Funk Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing tribute to some of the greatest jazz funk of the 70s – the groundbreaking work of trumpeter Donald Byrd, both as a solo act on his own, and as the inspiration for the mighty Blackbyrds group – both of whom are featured on this set! Byrd first broke into new territory in the early 70s with a string of amazing records on Blue Note – all done with help from genius producer Larry Mizell, who helped Byrd's trumpet find a way to groove in an electric space, but at a level that was very different (and a lot more soulful) than any sort of Miles Davis electric modes! This work quickly inspired a young group at Howard University, who chose the name Blackbyrds as a nod to Donald – who quickly became their mentor and producer, and helped them forge a great blend of jazz and funk before they took off on their own. This set features 39 tracks from both artists, illustrating a fantastic partnership and shared musical inspiration – with work from Byrd's Blue Note and Wea albums, and all the great Blackbyrds records for Fantasy in the 70s. Titles include Donald Byrd tracks "Dominoes", "Black Byrd", "Lansana's Priestess", "Wind Parade", "Flying High", "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", "Onward Til Morning", "Dance Band", "Science Funktion", "Dominoes", "Flight Time", "Witch Hunt", "Stepping Into Tomorrow", "Sexy Dancer (12" mix)", "Star Trippin (12" mix)", "Pretty Baby", "Giving It Up", and "Dancing In The Street". In fact, the sound of these cuts is right in the same mode as those – very late 70s/early 80s – with lots of space between the keyboard lines, and a mostly electronic approach to the music – those long lines and lean moments that Carpenter used so well to emphasize fear and tension on the movie screen! Her voice stands up well to the mainstream polish, and even the creepy "duet" with her father is enjoyable. 22 tracks in all, including "The Very Thought Of You", "Paper Moon", "Mona Lisa", 'This Can't Be Love", "Lush Life", "That Sunday That Summer", "Avalon", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Nature Boy", "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Thous Swell" and "Unforgettable". Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $9.99 19.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. Con Funk ShunFever ... CD
Mercury/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
One of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked". CD

Creedence Clearwater RevivalLive At Woodstock ... LP
Craft, 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 34.98
The complete Woodstock performance by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969 – brought together here as an official album for the first time ever! CCR were a very important part of that legendary rock festival, but didn't get placement on the original record in a way that lived up to their presence at the concert – a fact that's nicely corrected here, with a double-length album that brings together every song they played that night in 1969! The set features a very long jamming take on "Suzie Q" – plus "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", "I Put A Spell On You", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Keep On Chooglin", "Commotion", and "Bootleg". Fantasy, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
It's hard to get any more classic than this for Creedence Clearwater Revival – as this legendary late 60s album is definitely the place where it all comes together! The pairing of John Fogerty's lead guitar and the scratching rhythm guitar of brother Tom really sounds wonderful here – driven on by tight bass and drums, but always with this rootsy edge that stretches from the Bay Area scene way down to the bayou! Titles include the classic "Down On The Corner" and a great version of "The Midnight Special" – plus "It Came Out Of The Sky", "Side Of The Road", "Effigy", "Don't Look Now", and "Fortunate Son". ✨✧ Creepy John Thomas/RustTrippin Like A Dog & Rockin Like A Bitch – The Complete Recordings (Come With Me/Creepy John Thomas/Brother Bat Bone) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Three full albums from Australian singer Creepy John Thomas – all of them pretty darn great! The set begins with a record issued under the name of Rust – a set recorded in Germany, by Australian singer John Thomas – all quickly put together in the studio, but with results that are surprisingly great! The group have a psychedelic look on the cover, but are more old school rockers with some late 60s twists – some Beatles-esque arrangements on a few tracks, freakier vocals on a few others, and this stunning ability to move between styles while still making the record feel very unified overall. The whole thing's wonderful – filled with catchy tunes and madder moments – titles that include "Delusion", "Come With Me", "Find A Hideaway", "The Endless Struggle", "Please Return", and "Should I". Next is the self-titled Creepy John Thomas album – a stunning set from Aussie singer John Thomas – billed here as Creepy John Thomas, a name that was supposed to invoke older blues roots while also pitching the whole thing to the weirder, wilder, wiggier generation at the end of the 60s! In truth, there's very little blues rock here at the forefront – maybe in part because the album's an early production effort by Conny Plank – who does a great job bringing out all these odd sounds from familiar elements – so that the fuzzy guitar and heavy bass can get weird and moody at times, even when the song structure might be relatively tight. The driving force, though, is Creepy John – the kind of singer who should have been part of some supergroup at the start of the 70s – but who's maybe even better as one of rock's great under-discovered lesser-rans. Titles include "Sun & Woman", "Bring Back The Love", "Ride A Rainbow", "You've Got To Hide", "Gut Runs Great Stone", "Do I Figure In Your Life", "Moon & Eyes Song", and "Trippin Like A Dog & Rockin Like A Bitch". Last up is Brother Bat Bone – a real gem from the overlooked Creepy John Thomas – a record that evokes familiar blues rock styles, but with a much trippier sound overall – as you might guess from the image on the cover! Creepy John plays acoustic and electric guitar – with qualities that are even stronger than his previous records, and which lead to the longs being longer, with some surprisingly great solo parts – which are then topped by those raw, nasty vocals that always made Thomas such a budding talent at the time! There's a complexity here that's really surprisingly – the guitar work alone is wonderful, and all the rest is really just icing on the cake – on titles that include "This Is My Body", "Standin In The Sunshine", "100lb Noomy", "What's The Matter With The Mill", and "Down In The Bottom". ✨✧ Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisL'Ultimo Squalo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nice little shark-themed soundtrack, but one that comes across with a vibe that's quite different than any of the music used for Jaws – partly because there's a number of vocal tunes in the mix! The set features three standout songs – "Hollywood Big Time" and "You've Changed The World For Me", sung by Yvonne Wilkins – and "Ballad", which is sung by composer Maurizio De Angelis himself – which are then mixed with instrumental numbers that are electric and keyboard-heavy, maybe more in line with Italian slasher/horror work of the period than you might expect! The colder electronics must have given the watery scenes a really great vibe on the screen – and the package features great sound throughout, and a mighty nice graphic appeal. LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note/Applause, 1968. Very Good ... $9.99
Funky genius from Lou Donaldson – one of his first funky albums for Blue Note, and a real killer all the way through! The album has a great young group working with Lou – players that include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Lonnie Smith on organ, Leo Morris (aka Idris Muhammed) on drums, and George Benson on guitar – grooving with that really soulful early sound of his! The album has that hard Lou Donaldson funky sound that still sounds fantastic today – and titles include "Dapper Dan", "Midnight Creeper", "Bag of Jewels", and "Love Power". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cornell DupreeShadow Dancing ... CD
Versatile/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! The album's got a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches. Includes "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "On & On", "The Closer I Get To You" and "Hey Girl". CD

Columbia, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Ronnie Dyson's standout set from the start of his career – a beautiful batch of Philly soul tunes that get some key help from the team of Thom Bell and Linda Creed! Bell produced and arranged part of the set – with other help coming from Stan Vincent and Billy Jackson – all of whom really get the right idea for Ronnie's amazing voice – and really help him find a way of stepping past his previous career on the stage! Some of the best cuts that mix of fragile and groovy that was really working at the time for harmony groups like The Delfonics or The Stylistics – a mode that takes Dyson far past his work in Hair, to a mode that has him almost doing better on his own than any other contemporaries from the show. The set features the sublime cuts "One Man Band", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Give In To Love", "Girl Don't Come", "Love Of A Woman", and "Point Of No Return". ✨✧ Edson XGinga A Alma Do Futebol Brasileiro ... CD
Lua (Brazil), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A creepy cover, but a really amazing batch of grooves – one that blends rootsy Brazilian percussion with elements of dub, funk, and hip hop – originally recorded as the soundtrack for a documentary on football, but sounding plenty darn great here on its own! Edson X is at the helm of the record, but gets help from a number of other younger artists as well – and the album's awash in tight percussion jams, funky rhythms, stripped down grooves that are all surprisingly free of cliche! At times, there's a bit of the Trama-like blend of old and new going on – but the overall sound is much rougher and more rootsy, filled with live instrumentation and sometimes a bit of the noisier side of baile funk production. Titles include "Forro No Bar", "O Que E A Ginga", "Gingar Para Ser Feliz (Ginga mix)", "Aleluia (baile funk mix)", "O Craque", "A Hora Do Goi (swing guitar)", "Bonde Do Bem (live session)", and "Funk Da Vitoria (extended)". ✨✧ Jonathan EliasChildren Of The Corn (red/orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
1984, 1984. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really standout horror soundtrack from the 80s – one that's maybe got a bit more richness than some of its contemporaries, and a sonic depth that really adds a lot to the action onscreen! The main theme is wonderfully brooding – a mix of light keyboards and darker, murkier orchestral sounds, with occasional Wicker Man-like vocal moments – continued throughout in variations of a similar mode that shifts nicely as the record moves on, and the action creeps forward with a hell of a lot of tension! Jonathan Elias wasn't one of the biggest names in scoring at the time, but this work is certainly some of the best – and titles include "The Cornfield", "Dream Music", "Barn Run", "Vicky's Dream", "Attack Of The Children", "Fighting Back", "Burning The Cornfield", and "The Invasion". Don EllisHaiku (US pressing) ... LP
MPS, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the coolest albums ever cut by trumpeter Don Ellis – quite different from any of his American sessions of the time, and done with a really stretched-out, ambitious sort of feel! The record matches Ellis bold trumpet work with some hip arrangements that feature multiple guitars, keyboards from Milcho Leviev, a bit of harp, and some added strings to round out the sound nicely – a complex approach that gives the record some of the sophistication of the hipper Creed Taylor productions of the early 70s. The strings really bring in some arch-sounding notes at points, then slide into warmer passages at others – and Leviev's keyboards have a rich tone next to the sharper notes of Don's trumpet on some of the best cuts. The whole thing's about as poetic as you'd guess from the title, and from songs like "Dew", "Summer Rain", "Forest", "Cherry Petals", "Water Jewel", "Blossoming", "Mirror Pond Of Stars", and "Parting". Light In The Attic, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Roky Erickson's fantastic early 80s material with The Aliens – tracks that were produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival's Stu Cook – with some of the most straight-forward and accessible rockers in Roky's canon, but still sporting his trademark eccentricity! Given his mythical personal history, you can easy describe Roky Erickson as "having demons" – but as you'll hear, he's also got two-headed dogs, vampires, zombies, fire demons, ghosts and Lucifer himself – just on this one record! The tracks have an odd release history – having been recorded in the late 70s, but not released until 1980 in the UK on the Five Symbols record, and in '81 as The Evil One LP, with an altered tracklist. This definitive Light In The Attic version gathers up all 15 amazing tracks from the Stu Cook sessions from '77-'79. Includes the legendary "Two Headed Dog" and many more tunes that are just as incredible! Titles include "I Walked With A Zombie", "Night Of The Vampire", "It's A Cold Night For Alligators", "Mine Mine Mind", "I Think Of Demons", "Creature With The Atom Brain", "Bloody Hammer", "Don't Shake Me Lucifer", "If You Have Ghosts" and more. Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... $6.99
There's definitely lots of brass here – as you might guess from the title – but never so much so that it gets in the way of individual soloing by Maynard Ferguson! The date features Maynard working with arrangements by Willie Maiden, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, and Bill Holman – all for a largeish group that's wonderfully hip – Bobby Timmons on piano, Anthony Ortega on alto, Jimmy Ford on alto and tenor, Willie Maiden on tenor, Tate Houston on baritone, Richard Evans on bass, and Larry Bunker on drums – plus some added trumpets and trombones! Maynard himself plays both instruments on the date, and the album also feature some surprising guest vocals by Irene Kral on 4 tracks – spicing up the instrumental blend with lyrics on "Moonlight In Vermont", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Imagination", and "The Song Is You". Instrumental tracks include "Jeepers Creepers", "I Never Knew", "A Foggy Day", "Love Me Or Leave Me", and "The Lamp Is Low". LP, Vinyl record album

Emanuelle makes it over to the US – to give our shores a sexy taste of her erotic antics – and as usual, Nico Fidenco's along for the ride, to ensure that the movie's got a very groovy soundtrack! As with other Emanuelle scores of the 70s, there's a blend here of erotic pop styles, slinky soundtrack bits, and a few more exotic-styled moments that stand out nicely from the pack – making for a good variations in sound throughout the set, possibly even more musical depth than you'd get in the story or acting on the screen! A few tunes are performed by the group Harmonium, and have a tighter combo style – and instrumentation includes some great electric basslines, keyboard parts, and some occasional stronger guitar moments. Titles include "Your Solstice", "So It Pleases You", "I Celebrate Myself", "Emanuelle In America Dream", "Trouble", "Spellbound", "Rhubarb", and "Emanuelle In America Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fabio Frizzi/Walter Rizzati & Alessandro BlonksteinerLucio Fulci's Gates Of Hell Trilogy (City Of The Living Dead/The Beyond/House By The Cemetery) (3CD set) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980/1981. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Three Italian horror classics – packaged here in a single set! First up is Fabio Frizzi's score for Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi/City Of The Living Dead – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was one of the true masters of Italian horror! The sounds here are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – but the latter are often played in offbeat ways that they really sound electric – making for a moody mix of music that goes way beyond the usual spare slasher keyboards! A few numbers use wordless vocals, while others have nicely stepping strings – and a beefier bassline comes into play on a few standout funk tracks as well. Titles include "Toward Dawn", "Fatti Misteriosi", "Apoteosi Del Mistero", "Occhi Di Brace", and "Verso L'Alba". Next is Frizzi's Beyond/E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore L'Aldila – a very spooky soundtrack – and one that stands out as one of the best-remembered from this important second generation of Italian horror! The record's got less of the atonal orchestrations and funk/thriller modes of a few years before – and moves into the spare, eerie quality that John Carpenter helped usher in – with lots of crashing piano lines, atonal guitar parts, and weird descending chords that feel like they're going to suck you into the deep! There's some very nice and sparing use of synthesizer within the score – just the right bit to add a creepy edge, but maybe not as much as on other synth-heavy soundtracks from the time – and titles include "Voci Dal Nulla", "Oltre La Soglia", "Suono Aperto", "Verso L'Ignoto", and "Giro Di Blues". Walter Rizzati's score for Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero/House By The Cemetery has lots of keyboards – in a spare, spooky soundtrack from the early 80s Italian horror scene – a blood-dripping masterpiece from director Lucio Fulcio! Walter Rizzati's music here is heavy on the kinds of electric touches you'd hear from both Goblin or John Carpenter – and often paced at a level that's somewhere between the pair – not as jamming as Goblin, but a bit fuzzier than Carpenter – a blend that makes for some really wonderful numbers that are plenty creepy here on their own – even away from the images on the screen! There's plenty of great bits that creep up on you slowly – and others that jump mercilessly from dark corners – on titles that include "Quella Villa", "I Remember", "Incontro", "Blonk Monster", "Verso Il Terrore", "Voci Dal Terrore", "Tema Bambino", and "Chi Sta Arrivando". Stereophonk (France), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
These guys definitely take the "breaks" in the title seriously – as the music explodes with fresh funky drums right from the start – very much in an old school style, but mixed with elements that also showcase more of sonic influence from decades of hip hop production too! Most of the tracks are funk cuts created by mixing – ala the early years of the Melting Pot label – but there's also maybe more of a vintage vibe going on, and something of a Wu-Tang-inspired love of offbeat sounds and musical elements. Titles include "Nagasaki Break", "Itchy The Blind", "Okinawa Break", "Late Night", "Karate Break", "Sec Undo", and "Mountain Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

1984, 2019. New Copy ... $24.99 34.95
A hell of a great idea for a book – a collection of newspaper ads for horror films from the 90s and 00s – served up with page after page of striking images, as well as text from the author about each film, and snippets of press reviews from the time! The book is a beautiful tribute to a cinematic world gone by – and a great reminder of how important a full page ad in the paper was towards getting us out to the theater – a time when the two-dimensional presentation of the film was sometimes every bit as creepy as what you'd see in the movie! Images here were collected by the author over a 20 year period, and are presented chronologically – but not in a slipshod way, as the accompanying text does a heck of a lot to illuminate the images – which are both in color and black and white. 271 pages, hardcover, and with an index at the back! One of the maddest soundtracks you'll ever want – a strange mix of folksy tunes that are filled with creepy pagan energy – recorded for the equally odd film of the same name! The record is impossible to describe accurately, but it's a really dark one – strangely fragile at some moments, with a sing-song intensity that almost makes it feel like some of the late 80s pagan folk efforts of David Tibet. Many numbers have vocals, performed by the group Magnet – who really get the creepy spirit of the music right, as they move through these crazy pagan tunes that really set the scene for the story. Titles include the incredible "Willow's Song" – plus "Chop Chop", "Corn Rigs", "Summer Is A-Cumen In", and "Maypole". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Universal (France), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A very groovy record from the lovely Annie Girardot – done at a time when she was appearing onscreen in the Claude Lelouch film that's named in the title, but steps out here in an even wider range of modes than we might expect! The arrangements are great – handled by Maurice Vander and Roland Vincent – with a vibe that mixes 60s French pop with some more sophisticated soundtrack modes – sometimes with Girardot speaking in addition to singing – and, as with Jeanne Moreau on her Polydor album from the same time, coming across at a level that's a real revelation if you only know her from films. The set features a fair bit of original songs – many penned by Francoise Dorin with Jean Loup Chauby – and titles include "Bons Baisers", "Oui Non", "Mon Prince", "IBM", "Dans Une Glace", "A N'En Plus Finir", "La Chanson Empoisonnee", "Isalaide", and a nice take on "Vivre Pour Vivre". A wild little record from the Groovie Goolies – a monster rock band that was an offshoot of the Archies TV show – and who work here in a mode that's got the same sort of sing-song pop style we love from that group! Sure, these guys aren't The Cramps or The Misfits – heck, their costumes are more goofy than creepy – but they do a great job of singing these catchy TV versions of late 60s Sunshine Pop songs – softer than The Monkees, but maybe harder than The Partridge Family – all penned by the team of Sherry Gayden and Linda Martin, and put together with occasional novelty rock elements along the way. Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.00
A fantastic meeting of the musical minds – coming together here in a set of live improvisations recorded at a record store in Greece! The setting's an unusual one, and the music is too – sounds that really move past the usual for all three players, but especially David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson – both of whom seem very comfortable here in some of the sonic territory that we normally hear more from Rob Mazurek! Grubbs' guitar is quite different than on some of his own records – especially the solo acoustic moments – and Mats reminds us that he's not just a hell of a saxophonist, but also a master of many other ways to disturb the flow of air – delivering work here on flute, fluteophone, and live electronics – the last of which is matched with more electronics from Rob Mazurek, who also plays piccolo trumpet and wood flute too. Every song has a different shape and texture, which is a further testament to both the sensitivities of the musicians, and their sympathies with each other – and titles include "Not In A Hall Of Mirrors", "Creep Mission", "City Stones Sleep", and "Goats & Hollers". Chrysalis, 1981. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A nice change in sound for Debbie Harry – thanks to Chic production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – who really help the solo singer find a groove that's quite different than her work in Blondie! The style's a mixture of the funky club that Chic did so well, with elements that lean a bit more towards an early 80s rockish dancefloor – almost with a vibe that echoes some of the UK imports trickling over to these shores at the time, but with a definite New York vibe underneath! The setting gives Harry's vocals a great way to hit a more playful nature – that sound that was creeping in a bit in Blondie, but which some folks thought was wrong for the group – and Chris Stein is still on hand to bring in some street-sensitive riffing guitar. Titles include "Backfired", "Military Rap", "Oasis", "Surrender", "Chrome", "Jump Jump", and "The Jam Was Moving". LP, Vinyl record album

Cool is one thing that Eddie Henderson always is – as his sense of tone and timing just seem to get better and better as the years go on – and that's saying a lot, given that Eddie's legacy goes way back to the 70s! And although he did plenty of fusion and soul experiments in his youth, the later decades have always had Henderson moving into a role more as a classic stylist on the trumpet – one who seems to always set a new bar for his playing as time passes by – to a point where anyone would be daft not to call Eddie one of the more important voices on his instrument in the past 30 years. That sense of cool is definitely in place here, as is Henderson's subtle swing, even on the ballads – as Eddie works in a tight quintet with Donald Harrison on alto, Kenny Barron on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – on titles that include "Fran Dance", "Loft Funk", "Nightride", "The Sand Castle Head Hunter", "Naima", "Smoke Screen", "Bee Cool", and "Moontrane". ✨✧ Piotr HertelW Sloncu I W Deszczu ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A selection of work for a Polish TV show at the end of the 70s – music that's partly in a familiar sound library mode, but which also has some great sound library touches too – a nice sense of variety that really makes for an overstuffed set! Some of these tracks are clearly scene-setting instrumentals, but some others are material that was performed by groups that would appear on the screen – and there's some very nice Rhodes-heavy moments on the collection, in styles that are unusual, and which move past the more familiar crime/cop modes of the 70s. The whole thing is a great testament to the overlooked soundtrack skills of Piotr Hertel – and the set features 20 tracks in all, with notes in both English and Polish! CD

✨✧ Dan Hicks & The Hot LicksIt Happened One Bite (widescreen edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pretty great later work from Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks – not the immediately-retro style of their earlier albums, but instead this wonderful blend of so many different jazz and acoustic elements – set forward with a style that's wonderfully groovy overall! There's a hip, scatting vibe to the music that almost puts Hicks in the same 70s territory as Ben Sidran – although maybe a few notches earlier in terms of his inspirations – yet coming across with a breezy warmth that's really beautiful, almost like the shift that Maria Muldaur had made from her trad styles of the 60s to the groove of "Midnight At The Oasis". Fender Rhodes warms the record up at all the right moments – and titles include "Boogaloo Jones", "Cruzin", "Garden In The Rain", "Dizzy Dogs", "Vinnie's Lookin Good", "Lovers For Life", and "Collared Blues". Great CD issue features the full material originally recorded for release as a soundtrack – the tracks on the album, plus 9 more unreleased bonus tracks – including "Gone With The Wind", "Hummin To Myself", "Lulu's Back In Town", "You Belong To Me", and "Walkin My Baby Back Home". ✨✧ Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, & OthersCalifornia Concert – The Hollywood Palladium (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI, 1971. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully expanded version of this classic – two CDs, with previously unissued material appearing here for the first time ever! Although the genius of the CTI label might be often thought of in a studio format – especially since the Creed Taylor Influence on the label is what really turned the sound into something wonderful – this live set from 1971 shows that the label's players, with the right frame of mind, can easily get into the CTI groove in any setting – soaring out in a magical blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation, really stretching out on some killer long tracks! The group's a great all-star one – with organ and electric piano by Johnny Hammond, guitar by George Benson, flute by Hubert Laws, trumpet by Freddie Hubbard, tenor by Stanley Turrentine, and percussion by Airto – and all tracks are long, and very free-flowing. Titles include "Red Clay", "Sugar", "Blues West", "Leaving West", and "Fire & Rain". CD also features the never-issued tracks "Impressions", "So What", and "Straight Life" – all nice and long! CD
(Out of print. Remastered from the original analogue tapes!)
