Instead, he really uses space and timing to carve out a new sort of groove – one that's punctuated slightly by the rhythms of the combo, but which also firmly takes its cue from Bunky's own forcefully blown horn. Huge in Chicago, but not nearly as well-known elsewhere, The Sheppards were one of the windy city's best-ever vocal groups, and they had a rich deep style that spanned the gap between R&B and Soul, in a similar manner to The Impressions. This long-overdue set brings together 25 cuts by the group, and it spans the years 1959 to 1969, giving you a complete look at the group by including raw early R&B material, plus later smoother harmony soul singles from the late 60s. We love the later stuff especially, but all the stuff on here's pretty darn nice – and all cuts feature production by the legendary Bill "Bunky" Sheppard, the Chi-soul genius from whom the group took their name. Two great sides by one of the best harmony groups to come out of Chicago! "Steal Away" is a beautifully swingin' version of the Jimmy Hughes track, with prime production by Bill "Bunky" Sheppard. The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul material in a sweet tenor-voiced harmony style! Bill Bunky Sheppard produced the record, and it's got a sophisticated approach that offers a number of different modes for Gene to shine – heartbreaking ballads, rousing uptempo numbers, and some cool exotic tunes. Groovy Chicago soul group single! "Exterminator" is a sort of Temps-ish track about bugs – kind of a political number about the vermin in the ghetto! "What More" is even better – a fantastic group harmony track with a deep feeling, sweet vocals, and great production by Burgess Gardner. Skool Boyz are a lot better than you might guess from their dated 80s spelling – a surprisingly tight little trio, bouncing along with lots of riffing rhythms and sweet keyboard lines, but also keeping things pretty solid with a good mix of ballads alongside the groovers! One of the group members is Stanton Sheppard, and Bill Bunky Sheppard's listed as the executive producer – so we're guessing there's some sort of connection to the earlier years of the Chicago soul scene here – and there's definitely a solid approach to the record that's way more than the commercial pop you might expect from other groups with "boys" in their name. Titles include "Jam Beneath The Groove", "Can We Do It Again" (which has little bit of rapping), "You Can Get Down", "This Feeling Must Be Real", "I Ain't Gonna Go Searching", and "You Took The Best Part Of Me". A late 70s gem from Tyrone's years on Columbia Records – one that shows both sides of his talents for the label! The set starts out with an extended clubby groover called "Get On Up (Disco)" – a bumping sort of number that's clearly trying to push him into Johnnie Taylor territory, and which comes off surprisingly well. But even better are the rest of the tracks on the set – which update Tyrone's older Brunswick sound with a smoother, more sophisticated sort of style – still recorded in Chicago, and with some southern soul traces – but usually done in a warmer midtempo groove, with excellent lead vocals and great backing from The Haywood Sisters. Incredible work by the great Eddie Harris – an album that was initially recorded for Vee Jay during his early tenure at the label, but not issued for years! The album's one of Eddie's greatest from the time – a really far-reaching blend of soul jazz, hardbop, and some of the more exotic influences running through the Chicago scene from whence he came. Two tracks on the album are especially long groovers – "Cuttin Out" and "Shakey Jake" – both in the 15 minute mark, and extended jammers with Ira Sullivan on trumpet, Bunky Green on alto, and Melvin Rhyne on organ. The first two tracks on the set feature Eddie in a lineup with Willie Pickens, Raphael Don Garrett, and Ira Sullivan – on the modal groovers "The Dancing Bull" and "Antidote". And the last 4 tracks on the CD are pulled from the album "Half & Half" – an 8 track release that initially featured 4 tunes with Eddie blowing with a vocal group, and these other 4 that have him working with a very hip group that includes Charles Stepney on piano, Melvin Jackson on bass, Joe Dorio on guitar, and Marshall Thompson on drums. Titles include "Half & Half", "KC Blues", "Lawrence Of Arabia", and "Yea Yea Yea". CD

Upfront issue of some Donald Byrd stuff recorded in the early 60's. Two great lineups, one that pairs Donald Byrd with the tenor of Jimmy Heath and the alto of Bunky Green; another that has him joining Johnny Coles on trumpet and Duke Pearson on piano. Nice hard bop stuff, in settings Byrd's not often heard in, 5 tracks in all: "My Babe", "Counter Punch", "Step High", "Out Of This World" and "Angel Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album
