Thad Jones and Mel Lewis had one of the hippest bands around – and their best work was sort of an American equivalent to the 60s genius of the Clarke-Boland Big Band. On these classic recordings cut for Solid State, the Jones/Lewis group features a host of excellent players – like Billy Harper, Jerome Richardson, Richard Davis, Roland Hanna, Richard Williams, and Richie Kamuca – and the band has a tight, hard rolling format that keeps the rhythm nice and hard, and which lets the better players in the band stretch out on nice solos.
