A great late performance by Sam Rivers – one that has the musician working with all the free-thinking imagination he gave the world on his groundbreaking improvisation albums of the 70s! Sam blows tenor and soprano here, but is also pretty amazing on piano and flute – and the rest of the trio is equally multi-instrumental – as bassist Doug Matthews plays bass clarinet as well – and Anthony Cole not only handles drums, but also tenor and piano! The set begins with a beautifully bold, long improvisation – then moves into a number of shorter tracks with really fantastic shifts in sound and approach – before hitting another long improvisation near the end, and one more very long one as the final moment of the performance.
